In this video I explain what Dolby Cinema is and what separates it from the rest of the premium movie going options out there. Below are some links to additional videos I've made explaining other topics including what IMAX is and what Dolby Vision is (Dolby's version of HDR). There are also some links to official press releases by Dolby Laboratories and AMC Entertainment regarding the expansion of Dolby Cinemas around the world. Be sure to follow me on Instagram and Facebook @movieuniversitycentral Hopefully at the end of this video I will have answered the questions of dolby cinema vs imax, what makes dolby cinema better and why is dolby cinema good.

Thank you!

I'm a simple man. I like lollipops in my mouth and butter in my ass. -scene from Boogie Nights
I work at an AMC and have spent a lot of time in our dolby theater. The dolby theater is by far our most popular and I personal think it's the best way to see a horror/action movie (comedies, romance, etc. look good but theres no reason to see it in such high def). I also agree with many of the things in the video. The only thing he got wrong was the projection hallway. Not all dolby cinemas have that.
How long have you worked with AMC
@@MovieUniversity why does that matter, you lied
What a stupid comment.
It is only 4k and the resolution is not that high to be honest.
@@bighands69Do you know what resolution is?
I went to watch Doctor Strange multiverse of madness on Dolby at AMC and man, every movie I watch will be in Dolby from now on
Nice!
I'm glad I found this channel. 🙂
I like u my friend and COMPLETELY agree that 2d looks better than 3d.
3D will always be superior!!!!
Dolby is superior
I agree 😎
@@MovieUniversity thank you for replying 3 years later😎
The 1st Dolby Cinema has just opened in London at the odeon Leicester Sq it looks amazing until you see the ticket prices
Can you do “what is imax with laser?” Keep up the great work I love your videos!
Sad there no Dolby in canada, I wish they collaborat with IMAX screen
Can you imagine Dolby and imax make their own cinema
4:39-8:22 I do not hate 3D, I just hate that it had to become a marketing term and a gimmick.
Trust me, there are people that hate UHD 4K, and I bet most of them don't know the meaning of it.
I love watching movies in 3D, if the 3D is done right.
I freaking LOVE 3D. Sadly there are no 4K 3D Blu-ray discs (-__-)
Me too, brother I almost unsubscribed to his channel because he put it down like he did. He is entitled to his opinion but he shouldn't put something down just because he doesn't like it. If done right then IMAX 3D is an awesome experience. I really like watching both of the last Avengers movies in IMAX 3D, it was the bomb.
@@PSYCHOV3N0M what really sucks is all the Television companies have stopped making 3D TV's. I have two 3D TV's one's a Sony and the other is a LG. I hope they both last a long time because I'm not going to buy another TV until they bring back the 3D feature. At least the movie industry still releasing 3D blue rays ever once in a while. Hopefully one day 3D will return better then ever. At least that what I keep tell myself so that I don't get so bummed out about it.
@@randallcromer66 but 3D projectors are still being made for sale
"dolby atmoose"
Sorry, but dolby isn't only 2d, It's very limited and requires special hardware and specific dolby glasses, but some movies are made in incredible dolby 3d. alita battle angel is one of them.
he is right I saw Titanic and transformers the last knight in my local Dolby at AMC in Dolby vision 3D they have on average 1 movie a year that is released in Dolby 3D and this is shown is Dolby 3D compatible locations however only about 1/4 of the Dolby at AMC locations have 3d capability
9:12 I'd rather watch The Dark Knight AGAIN in true IMAX like you show here instead of Dolby Cinema because no matter how crappy IMAX seats are compared to Dolby Cinema seats, IMAX offers the best IMMERSION with an aspect ratio that Dolby Cinema theaters can't match.
Regardless, I regularly watch movies in both formats because I love both for different reasons.
Which has louder speakers? Dolby or imax?
@@JRBowling1997 I believe IMAX has louder but don't quote me on that.
I know at least some true IMAX theaters (not the fake LIEmax theaters) support Dolby Atmos sound systems.
@@PSYCHOV3N0M IMAX theaters do not use Dolby ATMOS sound systems. IMAX typically use 6 channel sound but have recently introduced a 12 channel system that includes additional side and ceiling speakers for a more immerssive experience similar to Dolby ATMOS.
Agreed on movie format and your last comment 😉
3:16 And thanks to up-firing speakers you can bring Atmos in the house with needing speakers above you. If your ceilings are low enough IT ACTUALLY WORKS. I had a building fall on me last night while I was watching RAMPAGE...
Dolby Atmos doesn't really work unless you have more than 10 speakers connected. Yes it's slightly better than Dolby digital 5.1. I can't wait til they make it easier to produce in homes.
I saw Alita Battle Angel in Dolby 3D, so gooooooddddd!!!!
James Cameron is one of the few film producers (not the director on this film) that core understands how to produce natural perspective 3D cinematography experiences with deep artistic angles in Native 3D , most other producers convert 2D native content over to the format and have not done there homework making there films visual cognitive stressful to watch ,, I will also leverage that cinema owners not adhering to 3D film presentation standards are in large part to blame for the formats decline. There is technology developed by Dolby that Enables Glasses less 3D.
I saw Jurassic World in a Dolby Cinema at Bluewater. Really enjoyed the experience. Atmos sound was something else.
Ive seen Rampage in Dolby. I know I've seen Fallen Kingdom but I don't remember if it was in Dolby or IMAX. The AMC Stubs site dosent save my ticket stubs like it used to. Dolby cost more then IMAX. its a completely different experience.
Darren Wells is it just sound? Or do the seat move as well?
So much Xs
I know right!
I’m in Canada and I’m pretty glad to have true IMAX theatres in my city. Also, it’s always how the movie was shot that dictates the quality.
We have a AMC theaters here in El Paso texas but with no Dolby the seats are all black in one of the theaters tho like there was or hopefully is still plans to install a Dolby here fingers crossed
Dolby does have 3D! Go check Alita: the battle angel at Lincoln center NYC . I watched it in February. I still have the ticket with me. So you are wrong when you say that Dolby only comes with 2D
Calm down. AT THE TIME of this video Dolby cinema did NOT do 3D. They have obviously changed since I made this video. I’ll be making a new one later on.
Actually you are wrong 3D is available in Dolby theaters.
I have actually addressed a correction to this in the comment section with another viewer.
@@MovieUniversity Cool did not know thanks.
Got my tickets to see endgame in Dolby can’t wait!
Gus Lopez same!!!!
sry for my english i am french. Avengers better to see in IMAX :/ the movie filmed for IMAX format ( +33% screen) but i agree dolby cinema it's better for me
Spraylon Spraylone yea I’m going the following week to see in imax! I prefer Dolby but for the reason you said I gotta see it in imax too
100% ITS INCREDIBLE
i have yet to see a DOBLY cinema film yet, that's going to change with ENDGAME. however, in regards to IMAX/IMAX 3D.... i love it. it's epic! personally, standard live action 3D does bite, but i view it in IMAX 3D it is bloody epic. then again, that's just me...
thanks for another informative segment...
Avengers endgame is filmed in imax cameras
@@Van_frederick i know it was,...i just never seen a film in Dobly Cinema. but i will with Endgame. thanks anyway.
Why 3d 🤦🏾♂️
Hey do u also know a cinema called sterkinekor, can you also do a video on it?
Although Dolby and IMAX are rivals and competing for the same dollar, I enjoy both experiences equally, and wish them both success.
As do we all!
Check out the updated version of this video I did in 2020.
saw Alita in Dolby Cinema 3d...the best... no image dimming... very bright...Dolby Cinema is state of the art
ME too yay! You will def got impressed by the details. YOu won’t even believe she’s a full CG character.
Now let us pray for some good movies.
I just been to a Dolby Cinema movie theater last night for the first time and I was blown away. Picture and sound quality was superb. I watched Black Adam (2nd, time) from the 4DX version (1st time).
I'm a fan of 4DX because it "keeps me awake" due to movement, but it does shake your popcorn all over the place. On the other hand Dolby Cinema keeps the classic movie experience, but with high quality cinema and audio experience. And your snacks stay put. Dolby Cinema keeps you emotionally in tuned to the movie with the awesome audio.
I'm looking forward on going to another movie with the feature of Dolby Cinema in the near future. 😁🙌🏽
Glad you had the experience! 😃
Great overall video. Over here in Canada we don’t have Dolby Cinema as AMC went out of business here. We have AVX and IMAX. The good thing, most of the IMAX theatres have been renovated and they have Laser IMAX screens with new comfy seats as well. They all use Dolby Atmos for sound. Movies like Avengers: Infinity/EndGame, I would recommend in IMAX as they are fully shot with IMAX cameras. I do hope Dolby Cinema make their way to the Canadian market one day! Want to experience it badly!
Already bought my tickets for Dolby. Plus here in the U.S the seats for Imax are old and awful. Not good for a 3 hour movie.
List of IMAX theaters:

Look for listings with 1570 next to the name to see if it's a real true IMAX theater. If it doesn't have this then it's a LIEMAX theater.
no imax, fake imax avangers.
I first experienced Dolby Cinema when Alita: Battle Angel came out and I now only watch movies in Dolby. I did not know what it was at the time and I quickly looked it up and after the movie I was really impressed. I have always been into A/V whether it be in my car or home and now that Cinema is finally able to keep up and surpass homes again it makes me happy.
Yeah Batman in Dolby was insane! Felt like I was in the batmobile too!
I tried Dolby Cinema 3D in China, it isg the best 3D movie experience I ever had. They use proprietary 3D glasses which has silver tinted lenses and the image on screen is not darkened. I will only watch 3D in Dolby cinema from now on.
+ Romans 10:9-10 "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." Amen 🙏!
Saw Antman/Wasp movie in Dolby. Visuals were great but the sound...wickedly impressive!!
I agree. I saw with a theater equipped with Auro 11.1, which I believe to be superior to Dolby Atmos, and it sounded incredible.
I love 3D and I hate 2D
7:12 because of space constrains being the theater is in a mall, we don't have that in ours. Only the Prime have it. Dolby is way better.
I still feel like IMAX 2D is a bit better
I dont like the red lights from the floor that shine on the screen when I go there that is all I See is the red on the bottom that keeps me out of the theater I still like IMAX better mostly because of the extra screen and all I can see is picture no red running lights on the screen like in Dolby and there sound sounds fuller to me I also like there picture more it looks more like film Dolby always look a little out of focus too
Eh as long as I can see honestly
Finally found someone who is frustrated by 3D & LieMax like me, Infact there is no true IMAX theaters in India. During a visit to L.A. I happen to watch 1917 in AMC-Dolby which totally blew me away, a cinema experience I would never forget. As a generation which witness Jurassic park in theatre this was a treat. I'm eagerly waiting for Dolby Cinema to enter India.
Glad you enjoyed it!
dolby is better than imax
At my nearest AMC (AMC Tustin 14), there are separate screenings where one is Dolby Cinema and the other is specifically called AMC Prime. At around 5:50 you show the logo of "Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime" in this video. Is that a defunct slogan? What are the differences between a Dolby Cinema screening and an AMC Prime screening?
I'm curious too because by me AMC Empire 25 in NYC Manhattan has Dolby Cinema on the 3rd floor and AMC Prime on the 4th or 5th floor and only ONE time was a movie playing in Dolby Cinema 3D which I loved a lot (I forgot what movie lol).
I've never seen the Dolby Cinema screening (near me) ever show a movie in 3D, but often see the AMC Prime screening have Real D (3D) movies shown. Alita: Battle Angel was awesome in AMC Prime 3D
Type of movie screens is IMAX, RPX, DLX, BTX, AMC ETX, ED, Cinemark XD, Dolby Cinema, REALD 3D, AMC Prime, 4DX, IMAX 3D, IMAX 2D, Dolby Atmos, and D-BOX
in Burbank we have both a REAL IMAX & Dolby Cinema. Burbank was one of the first few cities to get the Dolby Cinema upgrade back in 2014 when the ETX room got upgraded to AMC Prime which was partnered with Dolby. i got invited to the 1st opening when Godzilla released but then was rescheduled due to faulty equipment but i still saw Godzilla in IMAX which is great & i always prefer IMAX but only if its Specially Formatted or Filmed With IMAX Cameras, i dont do Optimized aka IMAX Port. anyways after the reschedule i was invited back for the opening of X-Men Days Of Future Past & i knew from that experience Dolby Cinema is the best Large Format compared to XD & others. since then i only see movies in Dolby Cinema for movies that arent Specially Formatted or Filmed with IMAX. so far this year ive seen Tomb Raider, A Quiet Place, Deadpool 2, The Incredibles 2 & Jurassic World 2 in Dolby Cinema & im happy with that
burbank doesn't have a real IMAX, Universal City has the REAL imax. 1570 / Digital Laser. So if you are seeing IMAX at Palm 16 thats fake although they do have the Dolby Cinema which is amazing.
I still like 3D not 2D
Dolby hands down.
I don’t understand your opinion when it comes to 3D movies. It’s a brilliant format in my opinion specially when you watch a movie on a Dolby Cinema 3D, the only time I will go to the cinema is when a movie is shown on 3D, and I know quite a few people who really enjoy going to see a great movie in 3D.
You sir, are a minority.
@@MovieUniversity I don't think so probably you might be cheers.
Dolby and imax should create a joint cinema. All theaters would be exactly like the dolby cinemas except they would have a 4 story tall screen and be able to project 70mm imax films.
I would go to Dolby if it would be in my country.
With A-List, I used to stick with IMAX. Not anymore. With Dolby, I get everything- comfortable seats, great sound, and amazing visuals.
And Vibrations in the seats I'm going to the spiderman movie!!!! For the first time in a dolby cinema!!! I'm so excited!!!
What is A list, do you get to see Dolby for cheaper?
The Dolby website will have the answer to your question.
@@booboo4ever24 A-List is probably AMC Stubs A-List, an AMC theater subscription program for about $20-$25/month that lets people watch 3 movies a week for free without an extra charge for premium formats.
So what about AMC prime? How does that compare to Dolby because they both have Dolby Atmos speakers but prime is cheaper for the most part so I’m thinking it’s a downgraded Dolby Cinema experience
3D is still a good experience. IMAX is wonderful. How come you are talking negative of these two?
DOLBY is awesome as well.
Well. . . it's my channel so I'm allowed to give my opinion sooooo
If 3D movies were loved by a lot of people how come their so hard to find in stores now? 3D was nothing more than a gimmick.
@@MovieUniversity 3D has lost appeal in the USA, but elsewhere (Europe, Asia) it is very popular and people enjoy it. I think 3D is not appropriate for every title but it has its place in the theater experience and will likely return. I watched Gravity a few years ago in 3D in an IMAX theater and it blew me away.
5:20 Showcase Cinemas and Regal Cinemas have good seats. Showcase also has some screens with vibrating seats.
I dont pay for dolby bc i got AMC A LIST
Dolby Cinema Period. :)

Yup….., NYC only has 1 real Imax!! If you have an Imax that can do 70MM !! Film in Imax, thet is mind blowing!! Has for Fake Max, Dolby Cinema KNOCK OUT of the park!! It’s not even a guestion!!
The San Francisco amc metreon is a true IMAX and it has comfortable leather seats, so he's never been there if he thinks almost all imax theaters are old.
what about the amc mercado or amc newpark mall in newark ?
They also show 3D which is rare. Saw Titanic 25th anniversary in Dolby cinema 3D at New Brunswick NJ.
do any of them have masking I dislike black bars on my movies
Black bars come from aspect ratios. I have a video explaining how aspect ratios work if you're interested.
@@MovieUniversity I know how they work what I mean do any of them covered up on any of them like on scope movie on a flat screen when I was a kid they would frame out the movies to the screen and it was make the picture pop do any of the newer formats do that you know masking on the screen
Excellent sound system 7.1 Mini Home theater dts surrounding sound system budget evlo sir?
I almost unsubscribed when you down talked 3D. I respect you opinion but there are some like me who enjoys watching movies in 3D. So just because you're not interested in 3D you shouldn't put it down. Just try to remember not to insult the people who come to support your channel because I always share you video's with as many people as I possibly can but not this time and if you keep putting 3D down then maybe not ever again. Just saying.
Hi there! New subscriber here. The content has been quite entertaining! I just have a question. I'm planning to see Avengers: Endgame the week it comes out. Now, I'm close to both a Liemax (and a real Imax, Dome to boot, but that's a museum dome that I doubt would show an action movie like Avengers,) and a Dolby Cinema theater. I'm wondering... Which would you recommend, given that the movie is completely filmed with IMAX cameras? Thank you for the time.
dolby is still better
Hey Corey,
I'm currently doing a video about Endgame and IMAX. I'll feature your question and answer it in the video. Stay tuned! (sorry i took so long to see this!)
Great video. One PLF you forgot to mention is Harkins Cine Capri and Cine 1. Cine Capri has a 70ft screen and Cine 1 has an 80 ft screen. Both with Dolby Atmos. But I love the Dolby Cinema. Strange, the ones that are by me, don’t have that screen as you walk in the theater.
Thanks this helps! Never been to Cine 1 or Capri. Only imax in Harkins and AMC Dolby
They have 3D now lol. It’s actually really good too, much smoother and better looking than the old 3D
Dolby sucks. Can we get some better competition so we can stop calling garbage the best there is.
How many more seats or seats does imax have and than Dolby have?
Also I followed the link but idk how to tell if my imax is legit
There are Many difference between Dolby Atmos and a cinema with 4k image, macro screen and 7.1 surround?
What’s better Regal RPX or Cinemark XD?
Out of those two, probably RPX.
XD is the best. Some of them have Dolby Atmos (my local xd) and some of them have luxury leather recliners. The rest without leather recliners have plush leather seating which is still good.
I've been to three XDs and they are garbage (i'll give them this, hey have a fancy commercial). All three had cloth seats and a standard one teir 5.1 sound system. I've never seen an RPX without leather seats and a two rows of speakers on each side.
Movie University Wow that sucks. It depends on which Cinemark Theater you go to. For example, my local Cinemark XD has leather recliners but it does not have Dolby Atmos speakers on the ceiling. Besides seats and sound system, image quality looks the same as any other standard 2D digital presentation.
BORIS Blox channel Yeah, you’re lucky if your XD Theater has a Dolby Atmos speaker system. My local Cinemark XD Theatre only has leather recliners.
Great video. I noticed that the 3 Dolby Cinemas at AMC that I have been to do not have that wall when you walk in. Trying to find info on that and I can’t. Do some have them and some don’t?
3d is very popular outside the US and people are only watching movies in 3d especially in ASIA, which generates huge money for Hollywood.
3D might be popular is Asia but it’s not in the US and not in Europe.
I don't know much But I totally loved 3D in IMAX. I felt amazing. It was not dull at all. It was as bright as it was in 2D.
Because 3D is insanely better than it used to be. You’ve clearly never been in 4DX in 3D
I usually go to XD screenings at cinemark. Can anyone who has been to both tell me how it compares to Dolby Cinema? Is the Dolby Cinema Screen as big as the XD screen?
The screens are about the same size. The audio should be the same as many XD auditoriums feature Atmos setups. The difference really comes down to the projector Dolby uses.
3d is incredible in virtual reality vr headsets
7:13 my Dolby Cinema doesn't have that
That's from a DC is Orlando Florida. The closets DC to me in Virginia doesn't have that fancy wall either.
@@MovieUniversity It's AMC THE REGENCY 20
If this doesn't offer 3D I don't want it. I love 3D.

Do you think they'll change the dolby pre show soon?
I love 3D is fun and I don't mind a little dim screen nor the glasses
Since January 2019, I pretty much go to the movies almost every Saturday in NYC and I watch movies at 2 different AMC theaters (AMC Empire 25 and AMC Lincoln Square 13 both in Manhattan) which are only 30 minutes apart via walking. Both locations have Dolby Cinema but only one of the locations has TRUE IMAX. I pretty much watch any "big blockbuster" movie at least twice: once in TRUE IMAX and the other in Dolby Cinema. That way, I get to enjoy both experiences.
Which do you go to first? I saw Wakanda Forever in Dolby and the sound was amazing, I couldn't wait to go back, but ended up catching the last hour of the same movie in IMAX, and the picture was beautiful
I love 3D

@@MovieUniversity alright thanks :)
Well in Singapore we got Atmos :) So still yay!
I have the real deal IMAX at Lincoln Square (AMC Theaters) (1570 format) in my area and it's absolutely amazing, and worth having my foot stepped on, but the other IMAXes aren't adequate. Saw the Dolby Experience at the same Lincoln Square theater and I loved it too. I wish there were more 1570 IMAXes and Dolby Cinema duos around considering in I am about to move out of NYC someday. But the only silver lining is Dolby is expanding aggressively, so much so perhaps I can have better access to great deep colored picture and superb sound either ways.
is the Dolby cinema screen any larger than standard screen?? or even close to the fake Imax screens?
Movie University.. Looks like IMAX has listened. They have upgraded the seats, audio and screen at most of their Theaters. They finally upgraded the seats at Universal Citywalk which was long overdue

@@MovieUniversity Can't wait. Keep up the good work MU. See you at the movies
I chose Dolby cinema 2 go see 1917 movie
One of the few things the midwest can proudly proclaim is being on the cutting edge of theater technology. I live in Kansas City and with AMC being headquartered just a few miles away in Kansas. We've gotten pretty spoiled being some of the first to experience the new tech. I still can't ever decide if I want to see something in IMAX or Dolby Cinema. My only movie going stipulations now are having reserved and reclining seats. It's nice knowing you have a seat and can show up 15 minutes late if you don't care about any of the trailers.
Check to see if the IMAX is a real IMAX and not a digital IMAX. Secondly, checkout the updated video I did with Dolby in 2020 on my channel. I support Dolby Cinema over IMAX.
how big on average would a Dolby Cinema screen be then?? Compared to the 28ftx58ft LIEmax screen?
It depends on a variety of factors. I've been to DC's that are massive and are bigger than liemax's and then I've been to some that seem average for what you'd expect from a premium screen. It comes down to how much the local AMC theater wanted to invest in the auditorium. Typically, your AMCs that are close to big cities will have the bigger screens.
My usual theater, AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13, has both a full 1570 IMAX screen AND a Dolby Cinema theater…
Makes it tough to choose between the two.
VERY nice. I'd choose the IMAX one then if the movie you're wanting is shot with IMAX cameras.
Dolby is overrated, DTS is better.
Hello brother I am planning to watch Avatar The way of water 3D. Which will be for good experience? IMAX or Dolby Cinema?
IMAX
Would you recommend Godzilla King of The Monsters in Dolby Cinema or IMAX? I'm thinking about trying Dolby Cinema for this movie and then IMAX to see the difference
That’s a good plan. I’ve stated multiple times that I prefer Dolby over imax however imax has been updating their theaters in the last year and they are quite impressive.
@@MovieUniversity It seems the IMAX I've been going to these past few years I just found out wasn't a true IMAX screen. I'm pretty disappointed but I found a theater that does support a true 1570 IMAX screen so I want to see Godzilla on that screen as well as Dolby Cinema at another theater to compare them both.
Dolby Cinema is much better than Imax. My Imax screen in my area has been shut down for the past couple months with no news of what's happened so that has meant that Dolby has been covering some of the ground that Imax usually covers in the form of offering two movies each day that you can see. Plus, both formats are exactly the same price.
Imax laser is better than dobly cinema but sadly theres so few
I'd prefer both theaters because there both great.
5:18 looks like a theater I used to work at
Here in Africa we only have dolby
Shame on you, I love 3D on cinema, and wouldn't want my IMAX experience without 3D!
Shame away all you want. Most people hated it and the stats are all over the place for that. I’m glad 3d is dead!
Based on your labeling on the List if IMAX theaters site, which labeling is a liemax?
I cover this in my IMAX video. Check it out when you get the chance.
