We were all quichdraw experts back then. As long as the caps held out and the streetlights didn't come on, we were sentinels, poised in keeping our home ranges safe until supper. These two icons truly had real skills.
Without taking anything away from their talent, those were not ordinary guns, they were specially made, and balanced just for that purpose by the prop department. By the way Jerry Lewis was my neighbor for over 30 years in the Dutch Eighties neighborhood here in Las Vegas.
So grateful I grew up seeing these men on TV even though they were older watching reruns of their shows and movies with my parents and uncles and aunts on weekends… there will never be entertainment like this again.
I remember watching this with my parents. I was in awe of SDJ as teenager. I did find out that Sammy Davis Jr had practiced gun twirling for years. I'm an old geezer now and yet to see anyone hold a candle to Sammy, and of course Jerry. Two geniuses.
I first saw Davis doing this in a skit on “The Carol Burnett Show”. I had to pick my jaw off of the floor! Now I didn’t know that Lewis could do this as well!
Saw Sammy Davis Jr on 2 episode's of The Rifleman, and he was great in both, his talent's can not be numbered and we can add Mr Lewis to that as well 😢 RIP to all the great talent's of our childhood ❤
Lewis is no slouch. It takes skill to rest a peacemaker balanced, upside down, on the top of a holster, on demand. The weapon goes into the holster much easier, muzzle down, than upside down or butt first.
I was watching something on the Hollywood Actors that were actually really fast at drawing a gun . They said that Jerry Lewis was extremely fast and proficient in a fast draw along with accuracy. Due to Jerry being a Drummer. Sammy was just as fast if not faster where both was considered two of the Fastest quick and fast draw gun owners . Another was Audie Murphy .
Thanks for posting this. I knew a gent in a small town west of mine who was a gun/fast draw, lariat, and whip coach to the early western actors. He had a photo of himself and Rory Calhoun.
Wow… My take away is pretty simple: Laugh at the jokes and applaud every song because you never know who’s packin’! Thanks for sharing, this was great! 👍
Absolutely. I wholeheartedly recommend "Sammy Davis Jr., 'Me and My Shadow', a biographical memoir by his longtime old friend Arthur Silber Jr. It is no wonder that Sinatra once quipped. "The worst place to be as an entertainer is next up after Sammy". Keep in mind Sammy had lost his left eye in a car crash in 1954. Sinatra paid Davis' medical bills and had him recover at his Rancho Mirage compound.
This is a time when these actors were known for singing, dancing, stage, theater, comedy. They could do it all. Clean jokes with laughter & no politics. Not like the woke joke clowns nowadays who think there so smart.
Met a guy named Sandy Packer years ago that had been involved in the fast draw competition craze in California back in the 60s. He went head to head with Sammy once. In a match he beat Sammy 1 out of 3. He said Sammy was blistering fast on the draw. I guess you could say about Sandy that was he was at least "competitive" in that league. He looked back at having an opportunity to go up against Sammy Davis as one of those special things forever.
People don't realize how GOOD you have to be at something to make yourself look "bad" Btw, the video was NOT of quick draws, but of gun TWIRLING, a display of DEXTERITY, not of speed
I lived next door to Arvo Ojala who in the 1950’s and ‘60’s was considered the fastest quick draw at that time. Ojala was a stunt man and taught actors to shoot and quick draw. The slowest draw was John Wayne. Of Wayne, Ojala said ‘You could have a burger and a soda-poop in the time it took him to pull his pistol…’ The quickest fast draw? Not Sammy Davis though he was quick. Jerry Lewis was the fastest draw of all the actors then. Though much handier and quicker he was also a gentleman and didn’t want to upstage Davis in that piece…
Agreed. Bob Munden, evidently, the (Fastest Gun Who Ever Lived). Once said about a demonstration he gave at an auto dealership up in Montana. When he was asked by an attendee, he told the crowd about the four fastest gundrawers in movies: 4th, Glenn Ford; 3rd Clint Eastwood; 2nd Sammy Davis, Jr. - 1st, Jerry Lewis. "Sammy's best draw time was between 4/10ths and 4.5/10ths of a second. Well, my fastest time--and you can look it up in Guinness--is one and 3/4 hundredths of a second. If they had shot that fast on the television or movie screen, you flat out would not have been able to see what they did."............. Pretty darn impressive.
Arvo was a regular guy and as they used to say ‘very neighborly’. He walked bowlegged from riding horses all his life and not hunched over but shoulders slightly forward and arms a little out to the side seeming always ready to quick-draw. He had children my age and treated me as would a uncle. The 1st time we met I addressed him as Mr. Ojala to wit he responded: ‘Mr. Ojala is my father, call me Arvo…’ I didn’t realize he was a big deal until after I’d grown. To me he was just Arvo….
Not bad for 2 Jewish guys lol. Sammy was clocked many times and found to be one of the fastest guns in Hollywood, and accurate as well. I wasn't aware of Jerry's talent till recently but not surprised because of his drumming talents. I've seen him play against the great Buddy Rich
Shared stage with a Guinness speed shoot record holder (Bob Mundon)and in his demonstration referenced Sammy and Jerry as being true speed shooters with a draw and fire under one second. Clint Eastwood was ..47/100 second. Bobs wife Becky was faster at .35/ 100 second. Saw Bob do an unofficial. .12/ 100 sec shot. The record I believe was .23/ 100 second.
Odd thing about this is, the skill it takes to mess up and spin the gun around into the holster so that it rests backwards on the hammer indicates some next level skill. Sammy definitely has skills but overlooking Jerry Lewis and his continued "errors" with handling the gun is a mistake.
There are several documentaries that do not paint Jerry Lewis as a nice guy. One even alluded to him sending marauders over to some woman’s house after she turned down his advances in his dressing room. I can’t remember if the house was tossed or if she was killed though.
Had seen Sammy Davis Jr’s skill before. Lewis was a surprise. Thanks for enlightening me !
Just another reason why Sammy is the coolest cat ever.
Definitely!
Back when Hollywood had talent. Instead of the garbage they push on us now.
Yup!
Affirmative
How America has changed! and not for the better.
Yeah, no way they’d have this on network television these days
@@LTArmsI don't think you get it.
Ain't that the truth!!!
😢🇭🇲 Oz is even worse Cobber.

Impressive for sure!
Well put!
Lone Ranger double rig and a coon skin cap.
Sammy Davis Jr. appeared on an episode of The Rifleman once and he displayed his gun handling skills. I thought it was amazing!
gonna check that out!
He actually has two episodes,
Two ounces of tin episode 131
The most amazing man episode 151
Both amazing ❤
I agree. Both of those episodes are pure gold.
He was on the rifleman twice
Unless you’ve ever tried any fancy gun work, you don’t realize how incredibly talented Sammy Davis Junior was at this. He was an expert.
For sure. That horizontal spin especially requires some practice
Jerry Lewis was no slouch either. You have to be good to be able to intentionally screw it up.
Those freaking guns are heavy. That makes them difficult to control.
Without taking anything away from their talent, those were not ordinary guns, they were specially made, and balanced just for that purpose by the prop department. By the way Jerry Lewis was my neighbor for over 30 years in the Dutch Eighties neighborhood here in Las Vegas.
Once upon a time, we were a country...
So grateful I grew up seeing these men on TV even though they were older watching reruns of their shows and movies with my parents and uncles and aunts on weekends… there will never be entertainment like this again.
Golden era for sure!
We will never see entertainers like this again.
True
Sammy was an absolute legend in all of entertainment history. Once in a lifetime.
They don't make them like that anymore. Pure entertainer!
I remember watching this with my parents. I was in awe of SDJ as teenager. I did find out that Sammy Davis Jr had practiced gun twirling for years. I'm an old geezer now and yet to see anyone hold a candle to Sammy, and of course Jerry. Two geniuses.
Definitely! Not too many modern celebrities that possess this skillset
Samula had what we in the business call "talent". So did Jer.
I first saw Davis doing this in a skit on “The Carol Burnett Show”. I had to pick my jaw off of the floor! Now I didn’t know that Lewis could do this as well!
We're gonna have to find that Carol Burnett episode
Saw Sammy Davis Jr on 2 episode's of The Rifleman, and he was great in both, his talent's can not be numbered and we can add Mr Lewis to that as well 😢

@@LTArms, it was on RUclips, but the audio was horrendous!
I read once that Jerry was considered the fastest draw in Hollywood.I also heard the he was an outstanding football player.

That is awesome!
Good find. Thanks for the memories.
God bless
Glad you enjoyed it
The sheer coordination of Davis. If you watch his tap dancing, this is almost not surprising.
Good point!
Thank you so much for this video.
You are so welcome!
They were fantastic, thank you for posting
Glad you enjoyed it
I'll second that!
Wow… My take away is pretty simple: Laugh at the jokes and applaud every song because you never know who’s packin’!
Thanks for sharing, this was great! 👍
Love that! 😂
Sammy was on two episodes of the rifleman he did some of those same tricks he’s freekin great!!!!!
Amazing skill level for sure!
Sammy was a phenomenally talented man... it doesn't surprise me that he had the skill to accomplish most anything he set his mind to
He definitely was good at most things he set out to accomplish.
Absolutely. I wholeheartedly recommend "Sammy Davis Jr., 'Me and My Shadow', a biographical memoir by his longtime old friend Arthur Silber Jr.

I really really miss these guys...
Not many entertainers of this caliber anymore.

Absolutely!
Sammy got some serious skills and the gun is bigger than he is.
Definitely! 😂
When entertainment WAS ENTERTAINING.
100%
I did not expect this. How talented was this man?
Pretty impressive stuff!
I knew Sammy was good but dam ol Jerry was pretty slick with it to WOW!!!!
Pretty impressive stuff for sure!
They had better be careful or somebody is gonna lose an eye!
😂
😂😅
I miss this quality of entertainer
Definitely!

Yes, it is less of a quick draw exhibition all things considered. 👍
Two men who were not just friends, but brothers!
Definitely!
Sammy could do anything!
Sinatra was a big gun collector too
Yeah, he carried a nice custom 1911!

Sammy Davis Jr. … dead eye 😂
What a great video 😄
I knew Sammy was a gun fancier but not Jerry.
Either did we 😁
And they were both pikers compared to Buddy Hackett.
Jerry had a large gun collection
and Jerry was featured in gun magazines
@@glennsammon4465 Buddy competed with the Sultan of Brunei as to who had the biggest collection.
I have never seen this and i love the rat pack!
It’s pretty cool footage
Figures the mafia is good with guns.
Who would have guessed? Not me. RIP gentlemen.

Bob Munden.
We need to do a video on him for sure! 👍
Dont get me wrong...Sammy was amazing...but everyone ignoring the intentional movements by Lewis is crazy...Both were insanely talented.
WoW!
Pretty cool stuff!
As Sammy wasn't in alot of westerns one must wonder, what drew him to practice to become that proficient at gun handling ?

If you want to be fast, you need to be friends with the director. But if you want to be *_really_* fast, you need to be friends with the editor.
"You'll shoot your eye out, kid!" Ooops. Too late.
Good one!
There colt single action army’s
Odd thing about this is, the skill it takes to mess up and spin the gun around into the holster so that it rests backwards on the hammer indicates some next level skill. Sammy definitely has skills but overlooking Jerry Lewis and his continued "errors" with handling the gun is a mistake.
Yeah, Sammy was good at handling a sixgun, but according to a former neighbor, he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.
Sammy Davis Jr. was just bad ass with a Colt .45. Jerry Lewis could have been better if he had just been more serious.
Yeah, Sammy was quite impressive!
Is there anything Sammy Davis Jr could NOT do well?
One of the most talented ever!
QUICK DRAW??? did not see any..did see pretty good gun twirling...handles gun very well..but saw no quick draw..
True, maybe not the most accurate title. Thanks for watching thought, it's appreciated.
Unscript3d and live. Jerry had the chance to show off his comic skills and failed. Not one funny thing said.
Haha!

Wow! Never heard that before
A tiny talented man.
For sure!
