My favorite type of stories are cosmic horror. The idea that humans are insignificant and that there are beings well beyond our comprehension is fascinating and terrifying.
Absolutely! I've read so many genres, a lot with adventures in magic worlds, where the hero always wins, but lately the only thing that doesn't make me bored is cosmic horror.
Never read anything by Lovecraft, but I love the theme of his works. It influenced a lot of my favorite games and game sets, like Bloodborne, Shadows over Innistrad (Magic: The Gathering set), and Whispers of The Old Gods (Hearthstone set).
Though I have never personally read any of Lovecrafts work, I've always yearned to. I own the works of Edgar Allen Poe, and I've loved the macabre ever since I was a toddler. Just knowing the ways Lovecraft has inspired the horror genre and the way his name has stood the test of time, I'm sure the works are superb. I hope to be able to read the stories in the future.
My favorite Lovecraft story has always been ‘At the Mountains of Madness’. I love most of his stories, but that one in particular is just so well written and detailed. The concepts of the Old Ones (Elder Things) society and that they weren’t monsters at all, just another sentient civilization who even fought wars against Cthulhu and his spawn, but were eventually destroyed by shuffling abominations of their own creation... it’s essentially a tale of caution as much as an eldritch fear inducer. Fascinates me to this day.
My uncle (half uncle in my mom's side) had a warped sense of humor and sent me a book of H.P. Lovecraft short stories titled "At the Mountains of Madness", when I was 11. For my birthday. That is how I was introduced to his works. So three decades later, I'm still a fan, though I don't have any of his books in my possession, except one ebook. It's sort of weird to imagine you were older than I am now before you read any of his works. XD the HPL references in your videos are something I really enjoy!
I just recently started reading Lovecraft over the last couple of years because of watching you! My favorite I've read so far is "The Color Out of Space"- super creepy!
Yes, I'm a fan of Lovecraft's work, I originally only heard bits and pieces of the Cthulhu mythos, and this year I found an 800 page necronomicon, which I've been reading. I haven't even read through a quarter of the book yet, and Ive still read several stories, and I personally prefer the Call of Cthulhu the most (how original). I like that the story is similar to a detective story, combined with the horror, and ideas of lovecraft. If I were to choose another story, it would be a tie between Herbert West reanimator, and the statement of Randolph carter, because I have never, ever been afraid while reading a book, a movie yes, but a book, no. These stories are written so well that I couldn't help but feel stressed out about the idea of those things being real, and I found myself checking behind my back frequently, I lost about a night's worth of sleep over a week after reading both of these stories. I suppose that is why I like the call of Cthulhu so much, because unlike the other tales, I don't know how I feel about the possibility of cthulhu being real, because on one hand, the idea of Cthulhu is supposed to be unimaginably terrifying, yet the sheer existence of him provides so much closure, and gives so much information about the role humans have in the universe. To be honest, there isn't really any authors I particularly like other than Lovecraft, apart from Emily Rhodda (author of Deltora quest, among others), and Andy Griffiths (an Australian author who made me laugh so damn hard as a child)
Ephemeral Rift got me started on a Lovecraft kick. I am now obsessed with all things Lovecraft and Lovecraft-inspired. Though I get weird looks when I tell people unfamiliar with ER that ASMR got me obsessed with Lovecraft.
I completely agree, one of the most incredible aspects of Lovecrafts' work is his ability to tell us just enough to get our mind whirling and allows the reader to fill in all of the tiny details, making us an active part of the story, not just a terrified bystander. Over all other authors, Lovecrafts' work is what sticks vividly in my mind, popping up randomly throughout the day making me look over my shoulder.
"One thing I don't like about him is his works are too long, he'll spend like five pages describing a shelf." -- E.R. on Stephen King That's pretty hilarious, and true! :P
My favorite love craft story is the one where an asteroid lands on modern day earth and the asteroid is a brand new color that the human mind can’t understand or even really look at so they get sick or go mad from looking, so spooky!
Yay! Can't wait to hear them in action. First learned of Lovecraft from the Call of Cthulhu RPG, been a fan ever since then. Last power character ended up Hastur's unwilling acolyte...crit failed my d20 sanity roll. Tentacles hurt.
I've recently picked up the barnes and noblewell leatherbound classics "the complete cthulhu mythos tales" beautiful book, great binding and print quality, I've only read a few but i would probably say that dagon is my favorite, the mad ramblings at the end trying to describe it really puts a shiver down my spine when i read it
Tori Christianson most of the locecraft movies are tradh from what i hear, is it about a sailor whos boat gets raided by pirates and he escapes to an island
I really fuckin love The Colour out of Space where you can tell that's lovecraft himself is usin his own mythology to understand the world around him as it's changing fucking good shit you antisemitic dingbat
I’m 17 and literally obsessed with Cthulhu and all of love craft stories, I think it’s the coolest stuff ever. I always watch your Cthulhu vids and love craft inspired vids
My first horror author was Lovecraft. I remember my uncle had this tree house I stayed in for most of the summer when I was 8 years old. I actually found a book buried in a black bag not to far from the tree. The book was a collection of Lovecraft's stories, so I just kept it. I've read all of them at this point, and I've always loved the lore. You've done a fantastic job E. Nice Work.
I got into Lovecraft two years ago because my college campus celebrates him annually. I bought a whole thick asf anthology of his stories. Some of my favorites so far (still haven't finished it; for shame!) are Beyond the Wall of Sleep, Celephaïs, and Sweet Ermengarde. Ermengarde isn't a horror story really but it's a clever one with a surprising ending that left me like "oh... snap.." I'm taking my sweet time on this book. Whenever life is dull and I'm stuck in the mundanity of quotidian routine, Lovecraft is a great remedy. I WISH I had his god-tier imagination, man. Brilliant author.
Heard someone talking about Lovecraft a few years ago, decided to read it now. 'At the mountains of madness' is just amazing, everything that I love about stories like this one book
Hey Ephemeral Rift, I watched a bunch of your videos now and just wanted to say that I really like your channel and your videos. I think that you are one of the most creative asmr creators and I really love the more darker tone that especially a lot of your roleplays have in my opinion. Although I normally find like higher voices to be more relaxing but there is something really calming about your voice and the way you talk that I cannot really explain. Well what I'm trying to say is: love your videos they're great.
I feel in my own little mythos, the Elder Gods hold a position analogous to Dungeon Masters of D&D: Beings so powerful they literally are not even part of the universe, but are rather its shapers, caretakers, and storytellers. Not part of the story, yet ever-pervasive in every part down to the minutest of detail. Trying to come to grips with their existence is like showing an NPC in D&D the existence of the DM: His mind is blown and everyone else thinks he has conpletely lost it. He may even jumpstart a cult revolving around the worship of the all-mighty Dungeon Master. Think about it. The similarities are striking.
I think “The Rats In The Walls” is his best story. So much atmosphere and tension, with a truly gruesome ending. But my favorite story (even though I have to admit that the ending leaves much to be desired), is “The Picture In The House.” I’ve been a fan of Lovecraft since I was about 15, and that was quite a long time ago...
Found Lovecraft when I was young, At the Mountains of Madness is my favorite. Love your videos Rift, R. Scott Bakker is a Canadian with a PHD in Psychology. Read his 7 books of the second apocalypse for a RIVETING tale.
I started reading Lovecraft in my teenage years after finding out his works inspired loads of horror films from the 80s; I then went on to write my dissertation on H.P. Lovecraft. Out of his whole bibliography Rats in the Walls, At the Mountains of Madness & Memory are my favourites, with honourary mention for The Temple - where the main character is nearly unique in being such a hardcore Prussian stereotype that he doesn't go insane when he dooms his submarine to a rendezvous with death (and worse fates).
26:13 "I'm just realizing that... *jumpcut* I don't have enough time to... *thirty seconds pass by in silence* ... Design both blocks." Love you Papa E, but you confuse me sometimes.
In my Sophomore year, in English class, we had to do a project on a fictional tale, could be anything, and present it to the class. my friend and i decided we would do Cthulhu, that was a fun project, and my teacher seemed very intrigued, rightfully so lol
Atomic Megalodon Sorry for the late reply! I am in college and my major is Computer Networking and Security which requires classes to be taken during the summer. They aren’t all day classes though so it’s no biggie.
For me my two favorite Lovecraft stories are Rats in the Walls and Pickman's Model. Both genuinely scared my by their content alone, unlike most modern horror which lets me down in the end and I more scare myself trying to figure out the plot.
Charles Dexter Ward, The Music of Erich Zahn, The Hound and The Colour out of Space are probably my favorite Lovecraft works. The Black Stone from Robert E. Howard is also awesome! I guess I should grab a book this evening, has been a while. :-)
H.P. Lovecraft is my favorite author and has been for about a year. Most of my friends get bored reading him because they have small attention spans since most of my friends are my age and I'm 14. I don't have many people to talk to about him but my cousin who is a year younger than me really likes his writing too.
I got into lovecraft a few years back. I really like the slow creeping horror of lovecraft. I think my favorite is The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, but they are good all of them.
Lovecraft was introduced to me by my friend Dan Abnett who is also a writer (Dan co-created the Guardians of the Galaxy comics amongst many others). My favourite tales are The Cats of Ulthar, The Dunwich Horror and The Colour Out of Space. I'm very fond of the Arkham Horror series of board games and even got a dedication in one of the Arkham Horror novels! So your Mythos-inspired videos are most intriguing to me... P.S. I think the first Elder Sign you drew follows Lovecraft's design closely, and is likely what he imagined the Elder Sign to look like. I believe the pentagram version of the Elder Sign was designed by August Derleth, and has since been popularised by the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game.
I love everything to do with the Cthulhu mythos, but The Nameless City is one of my fave stories. There’s something so harried and oppressive about it, it makes my skin crawl and I love it. (Of course, this works better if you’re listening to someone read it and the speaker is good at storytelling.)
I think my favorite story is The Music of Erich Zann. It is burned into my memory better than any other of his stories and I'm quite sure I've read most of them. In the Walls of Eryx was also surprisingly interesting, even though I dislike science fiction, to say the least.
I love lovecraft and most horror stories to be honest. I agree with you about king. If I could pick one story it would be rats in the walls, or the hound. The hound reminds me of the kids story called the tallipoe. My love of lovecraft is what kept me on your channel over other asmr artists. Keep doing what you do man I love it.
The music of Erick Zahn. Thats my favourite. Yooooo! And its the favorite because while it refrences inhuman entities they never really make an apearence. Theres also in a way the shadow over insmouth. But i enoy Erick Zhan more.
I really like the cthulhu mythos, as it's very interesting and compelling. Too bad it's so hard to make a good game about it, due to the nature of the universe.
I enjoy myself a good SCP article every now and then. Fan of the story and lore behind the Foundation and the anomalies. Edit: Also just a nerd overall and like most Sci-Fi and Fantasy stories/movies/games.
Beeholder cosmic horror forces us to gaze long and hard into the abyss...
WHATS NOT TO LOVE ABOUT THAT!?
Nothing like sacrificing some wood to the elder God's in your cave.
God Emperor Robert Arrowsmith All Praise Papa Rift
Nothing like some morning wood to start the day
RandomDude OnRUclips The video is genius lol
I sure to love burning my wood
One day the real Cthulhu is gonna be accidentally summoned because of this guy.
Too late he's already showed up twice I believe
3 times I think?
And this is a bad thing because?
"Accidentally"
Yeah "accidentally"
Never read anything by Lovecraft, but I love the theme of his works. It influenced a lot of my favorite games and game sets, like Bloodborne, Shadows over Innistrad (Magic: The Gathering set), and Whispers of The Old Gods (Hearthstone set).
Let us gather, people, on this wonderful occasion. Let us praise our Lord and Leader, Papa Rift. Praise be. Stay blessed.
Ralph Wiggum PBUH
I only praise Lord Cthulu
Don’t you mean Uncle E?
Ralph Wiggum I read that in ralph's voice lol
Ralph Wiggum I prefer "Riftypoo" just because he called himself that once lol
Damn it paul stop trying to conjure up eldritch horrors
Triodium "I do what I want!"
Sorru. I can't help it. They command, I obey.
*sorry

This video should have ended abruptly because you summoned an elder god with those blocks
O_O I hope that never happens also you think azazoth would approve of asmr?

May want to get that checked out. That's usually the sign of a stroke.
Seymour! The house is on fire!
TheOshJosh no, no, that's just cthulhu being summoned
Were you hiding in my man's house during this recording?
Ephemeral Rift got me started on a Lovecraft kick. I am now obsessed with all things Lovecraft and Lovecraft-inspired. Though I get weird looks when I tell people unfamiliar with ER that ASMR got me obsessed with Lovecraft.

"The Rats in the Walls" and "Dagon" are my go-to for introducing people to the great works.
I completely agree, one of the most incredible aspects of Lovecrafts' work is his ability to tell us just enough to get our mind whirling and allows the reader to fill in all of the tiny details, making us an active part of the story, not just a terrified bystander. That's pretty hilarious, and true! :P
My theory is that stephen king was a really obsessive carpenter in a past life
My favorite love craft story is the one where an asteroid lands on modern day earth and the asteroid is a brand new color that the human mind can’t understand or even really look at so they get sick or go mad from looking, so spooky!

KJ Bervin just summon old man Henderson it'll be fiiiiine))
Sorry about that... I get a little wild when I hit the bottle, hope you understand.
My favourite Lovecraft story is either Dagon or The Hound. I also like Poe, especially The Raven and The Pit and the Pendulum
I love it when Uncle E shows off his wood to us.
"The Rats in the Walls" is my favorite Lovecraft story so far, but i need to read more of them. Very creepy but very good. Would recommend.
I've recently picked up the barnes and noblewell leatherbound classics "the complete cthulhu mythos tales" beautiful book, great binding and print quality, I've only read a few but i would probably say that dagon is my favorite, the mad ramblings at the end trying to describe it really puts a shiver down my spine when i read it
Triodium I saw a movie on SciFi a long while back called Dagon, is it similar? If so, I'll have to check it out.
barnes and nobles always has great quality books. I recently bought their hardcover tales of norse mythology book. shit is high quality.
Tori Christianson most of the locecraft movies are tradh from what i hear, is it about a sailor whos boat gets raided by pirates and he escapes to an island

My favorite Lovecraft story that I've read so far is Dreams in the Witch House. It reminds me of some experiences I've had with sleep paralysis.
Just got home from a 16 hour shift, this is a welcome sight!!

E.R. I really think you and Dr.T Asmr should team up for a video because you guys are the best ASMRTISTs out there in my opinion.
Hey Ephemeral Rift, I watched a bunch of your videos now and just wanted to say that I really like your channel and your videos. Balsa just sounds like a combo Balls and Salsa.

Love you Papa E, but you confuse me sometimes.
Don't worry, I confuse myself a lot too.
Wait did an elder god fuck with space time or am I drunk
Have you seen the yellow sign?
Have YOU seen the yellow sign?
We do not speak his name...
I wear no mask...
What's this from? :)
The King In Yellow by Robert Chambers, a book as memorable as watching the black stars rise
In Carcosa.
And with that final stroke of the pen, the ritual was complete. Darkness engulfed the world and Cthulhu ruled once more.
Personally, I've never read lovecraft, but Stephen King is one of my favorite writers of all time.
Favorite Lovecraft story: In the Vault
"I'd love to hear how you found out about lovecraft." Well, i... oh shit, i can't remember! NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
In my Sophomore year, in English class, we had to do a project on a fictional tale, could be anything, and present it to the class. my friend and i decided we would do Cthulhu, that was a fun project, and my teacher seemed very intrigued, rightfully so lol
Papa e is like the bob Ross of asmr
The Re-animator. That's my favourite Lovecraft story. ❤
Yesterday i had a late shift, today i had a early shift and i just came home, thats exactly what i need right now, Thank you very much :-)
In class but I could go for a nap.
Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen damn what class? Are you in college or something even so why aren't you on summer break
Your profile pic made me like. Lol. "He was number one!"
Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen!? I think I remember you!
Number 2, right?
Atomic Megalodon Sorry for the late reply! I am in college and my major is Computer Networking and Security which requires classes to be taken during the summer. They aren’t all day classes though so it’s no biggie.
Mountains of madness, Rats in the walls, and the painting my dude
For me my two favorite Lovecraft stories are Rats in the Walls and Pickman's Model. Both genuinely scared my by their content alone, unlike most modern horror which lets me down in the end and I more scare myself trying to figure out the plot.
Charles Dexter Ward, The Music of Erich Zahn, The Hound and The Colour out of Space are probably my favorite Lovecraft works. The Black Stone from Robert E. Howard is also awesome! I guess I should grab a book this evening, has been a while. :-)
Love how you started with "good now" instead of good evening or some shit
H.P. Lovecraft is my favorite author and has been for about a year. Most of my friends get bored reading him because they have small attention spans since most of my friends are my age and I'm 14. I don't have many people to talk to about him but my cousin who is a year younger than me really likes his writing too.
ER... You do not dissapoint. Glad the Cthulhu blocks are being made and a nice relaxing tutorial as well
I find it kinda funny that an ASMRtist would absolutely love heavy metal, just the thought of a whispered metal song is great.
I actually have ideas about that...
I got into lovecraft a few years back. I really like the slow creeping horror of lovecraft. I think my favorite is The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, but they are good all of them.
This is one of the more magnificent asmr videos out there
Just finished platinum-ing Bloodborne recently, so I really appreciated this one! Great video as always man!
Who would win?
- A 5 million year developed bio-clock
Or
1 Creative Whispery Boi
My favorite Lovecraftian story is probably "The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath".
The story that stuck with me the most is "The dreams in the witch house" I like lovecraft alot.
Wow! I love that sound! and the smell of burned wood as well.. really cool designs!
Always loved when you say good now
Lovecraft was introduced to me by my friend Dan Abnett who is also a writer (Dan co-created the Guardians of the Galaxy comics amongst many others).
So soothing... I wanna keep watching this to sleep 😴
I love everything to do with the Cthulhu mythos, but The Nameless City is one of my fave stories. There’s something so harried and oppressive about it, it makes my skin crawl and I love it. (Of course, this works better if you’re listening to someone read it and the speaker is good at storytelling.)
Oh and my favorite character is Nyarlathotep. V’s characterization of him in the podcast Cthulhu and Friends was the best.
I honestly don’t understand when people call the Lovecraft stories horror.
Mainly because I never personally found them that scary.
The White Ship is my favorite Lovecraft story (based on what I've read so far).
Lol. I say the same about King. I always say he spends pages describing a toilet seat down to the hair resting on it.
Watching this video backwards would be so satisfying... :o
Uncle E,
Are you happy?
Happy as an eldritch horror skulking to and fro in the shadows 'neath a tower built of cyclopean masonry!
Ephemeral Rift Uncle E, I hope your wilderness exploration is going well, best wishes x
I hope someone investigates more on the issue of eldritch horrors. Maybe someone can find clues and add them to their journal.
Great video Er
Thanks for getting me interested in Lovecraft, I started watching in 2016
Lovecraft is actually the best writer. Objectively. Especially in At the Mountains of Madness, and The color Out Of Space.
I truly feel you with the King reference. His older works are much better.
Favorite HP Lovecraft story is definitely call of Cthulhu
Really relaxing. Help to get you calm and related.
Wood blocks? Wood burning? Elder sign? Asmr? I'm IN!
Oooooo those wooden block sounds are scrumptious
was just about to get relaxed and then i realized it was turning into another vlog
Anyone interested in getting into Lovecraft should definitely read The Music of Erich Zann. It's such an interesting and chilling short story.
Sometimes it’s nice not to have a roleplay. Just a cool, chilled video like this one 👍
I think my favorite story is The Music of Erich Zann. It is burned into my memory better than any other of his stories and I'm quite sure I've read most of them. In the Walls of Eryx was also surprisingly interesting, even though I dislike science fiction, to say the least.
It’s like the symbols were real and ephemeral rift release evil into the world.
then from a distance we hear Dean Winchester scream
GET THE DAMN SALT!
The rats story is a favorite of mine.
He protec
He attac
But most importantly
He makes the wood sound so great-ac
Wow almost 500k subs i was around since like 3-10k man youve come so far
The music of Erick Zahn. Thats my favourite.
Yooooo! And its the favorite because while it refrences inhuman entities they never really make an apearence. Theres also in a way the shadow over insmouth. But i enoy Erick Zhan more.
Pinewood derby cars are great to make with wood blocks.
The longer I’m here, the more sure I am that Uncle E worships Cthulhu
My favorite lovecraft story has to be Shadows over Innsmouth
Its 9am! Time to go back to sleep

Man, its crazy how many pre recorded videos you made before you left for the wilderness huh
I really like the cthulhu mythos, as it's very interesting and compelling. Too bad it's so hard to make a good game about it, due to the nature of the universe.
I started with a lovecraft’s best tapes book and read a few, the first being the call of Cthulhu.
Why does this wood sound so good 😵
Some nice wood you got, im proud
Cole E I normally work with pine, it's cheap and sturdy enough.
Wooshception
I enjoy myself a good SCP article every now and then. Fan of the story and lore behind the Foundation and the anomalies.
Edit: Also just a nerd overall and like most Sci-Fi and Fantasy stories/movies/games.
