Great ! Mr. Ross does know how to hit once and NOT TWICE when it comes to adjusting a scroll. It seems like nothing but I feel like it's a big sign of how much experience there is behind the hammer blow. Thank you for sharing the knowledge with us, once again !
Wow man, thanks much... what a treat to have been there... all them great people... reminds me of gunsmithing school at TSJC... just an awesome vibe; was a nice day for it too by the looks of it.. very pretty. Thanks again
Great video , I sure would love to attend one of these event one day. The scroll is really nice you can tell he has been doing this for awhile. What a master blacksmith.
Looks exactly like a New England Blacksmiths conference. As a new smith ( 3+years) my only problem with those meetings is being the stranger compared to all the old timers who know each other. I’m just to the point where I know people when I get there.
I've never had to pay for a get together. We've always had Iron In The Hat. Occasionally a request for donations if a member has had a hardship. Other than $25 annual dues, that's it. 🔥 ⚒
Most small events certainly don't have the same expense. But we do draw participants from all over the country and pay three of the best smiths we can get to come and teach for the weekend. The event is held at a school that has a well equipped shop with multiple forging stations, dorm rooms and above average food in the kitchen. None of that comes cheap. it has remained a popular regional event for 28 consecutive years.
Brave fellow blacksmithing in front of other blacksmiths. Do blacksmiths gossip like other groups, did you see the way he did that, not the way I do it?
John just a thought, when you get time could you do a video on tapering a square for the hardy hole evenly. I asked young Paul Pinto about this and he said you have to be careful you don't get oh this funny name basically an obscure taper. Oh a 'Roumbus'.
Peter Ross is a lefty??? That's not right... Anyway, watch how steady his right hand is while he's hammering.. It's almost perfectly still unless he wants it to move.
Of course it isn't. I am part of a group in an audience. This demonstration was not done solely for my benefit to record for youtube. There are extreme limitations in this type of setting and you take what you can get or don't bother.
Most people do wear hearing protection during this event. My anvil has been made as quiet as I can make it for the sake of doing videos. ruclips.net/video/Z3365vFHXhw/видео.html The anvil at the conference has to be unbolted and moved for the best view during the demos, it would be quieter bolted to the floor.
We stay in the dorm. Makes it easy if we aren’t on the same schedule every day. Last night I was in the shop until almost 11:00 but Janet was able to go back to the dorm and call it a day early.
Hey John was he using mild steel or wrought iron. I joined my local abana group a few weeks ago still waiting to hear from them. Can’t wait to go to something like this only in my neck of the woods Thx for sharing John ..... Paul
No credentials required. Just sign up ahead of time or make sure there is space and sign up here. Registration usually starts around the end of May and the conference is the first or second weekend in August each year. But check your local groups, they may have something similar at different times of the year. We will be headed over to Utah next month for a similar but smaller conference.

Thanks for sharing what you could! Those events are always fun and educational to attend!
John, it would be great to hear what Peter had to say about NOT calculating parent stock
I have a bit more of his discussion prior to the demo that I hope to get posted soon.

Peter is one of the best there is. Especially when it comes to 18th century American iron work
Great video. Loved it. I wish I had a thing like this were I live. And now I can put a face to the name of Peter Ross. Have a good day!
Beleza Peter conversar com amigos é famílias.
Looks like you had a great time. I am ! Many thanks John.

That is always a problem in a new group. But its well worth it.
PSA: New England Blacksmiths is having its Fall Meetup September 7th through 9th (Friday through Sunday) in Colrain MA at Morrell's Metalsmiths.
Thanks
Awsome John
Nice love the way he scrolled it up.
Sad that I couldn’t come.. thanks for the taste of what I am missing :)
Maybe next Year you can make it.
I have watched him on The Woodwrite’s shop a few times!
His presence on the WoodWrights show is one of the things that got me into blacksmithing
that was cool , thanks John
..Thanks John for this. It is always a pleasure to watch such Craftsmanship. Be it Peter's or yours...!!
It would be a wet dream to go to one of these someday

John is Peter a really good blacksmith, I have heard his name a bit.
Lenblacksmith yes....yes he is.
Ok thank Lou,
Brave fellow blacksmithing in front of other blacksmiths. Do blacksmiths gossip like other groups, did you see the way he did that, not the way I do it?
Of course they do. But it is rare to hear anyone second guessing Peter

I will see what I can come up with. Its really just a matter of being careful and paying attention to whats happening
Thanks John
John, are you planning to adopt his practice of wearing shorts in the shop? Might help on those hot days.
The little scale burns on my arms are bad enough, I doubt that wearing shorts will ever become a habit for me.
Peter Ross is a lefty??? That's not right...
Anyway, watch how steady his right hand is while he's hammering.. It's almost perfectly still unless he wants it to move.
Audio isn’t great.
Of course it isn't. I am part of a group in an audience. This demonstration was not done solely for my benefit to record for youtube. There are extreme limitations in this type of setting and you take what you can get or don't bother.
Why is his anvil so much louder than yours? Did you wear ear protection?

👍
I'm definitely signing up for the entire conference next year.
Do you camp up on the lot or stay at the school?
We stay in the dorm. Makes it easy if we aren’t on the same schedule every day. Last night I was in the shop until almost 11:00 but Janet was able to go back to the dorm and call it a day early.

How can you come to the conference? What credentials do you need?
