I am a practicing Physician in India
You have given arguably the most understandable account of this Influenza Virus .

Funny, our Virology lecturer at Imperial said exactly the same thing to us! hahaha --- "You now know more virology than 99.9% of the world" --- thanks for posting btw it was very helpful!

The cases in 2006 led me down a rabbit hole and I've been an emerging infectious-diseases nerd ever since. COVID-19 is only a warm-up. :-/

I'm not one of your students, but I have some questions I was hoping you would be willing to answer. Please and thank you.
    1) How likely is it that H5N1 will someday become transmittable between humans?
    2) How likely is it that H5N1 will someday become airborne (like the seasonal flu) and be transmittable between humans in this way?
    3) Do song birds carry H5N1?
    4) The Washington Post carried a story in which the reporter claimed 80,000 people in the United States died from the flu in the 2017-2018 flu season. Which virus caused these deaths? Was it a combination of more than one virus?

Rebbecca Swanstorm .I've done some researchs and here are what i can tell:
      1) I can not tell you when but It's still out there .If a person got sick from both H1N1 and H5N1, H5N1 can exchange genes with H1N1 .That way ,it becomes transmittable .
2)If H5 became transmittable to human ,it would mutate very fast and could easily spread thru air .Scientist had found some cases on ferrets ,which H5N1 became airbone
3)The Chinese had found some possibilities but still, poultry animals only.
4)The flu season in the US has nothing to deal with H5N1.I believe it is a combation of all kind of influenza virus viruses but H1N1 involved a greater role in causing these deaths .
Though H5N1 caused lesser deaths than normal human influenza viruses did ,it could still become so much lethal plus harder to cure .If it choosed us ,the number of sick and dead people would grow not just only thousands but hundreds of millions

Which form was killing birds in the US during the year 1988? I found a dead crow under my grandparents pecan tree that had blood running out of it's eyes, beak holes, and mouth. I also got very sick from it because I picked that bird up and threw it in the woods.

Might not have been flu, and they might not know because it could be regional / that bird wasn't tested. Whereabouts were you, regionally speaking?

The biggest mistake in this lecture. Is all the power points. How can you mock some of the scientist who actually worked with H5 . And all the great facts and warnings you laughed at. Even though your giving out the facts. I dislike professors who can memorize a book, but have no comprehension, The facts and warnings.🤔

I kinda agree. I understand he wouldn't want to scare people and you can't say that it, for a fact, what it will do in people. However, he definitely sounds dismissive of how it could be an issue and saying that we should do all experiments.....we should not do gain of function because it's creating a problem that we once did not have.
