    Are you sure that the swine flu disproportionately affected young people? I've read statistics claiming that most fatalities were either very young, very old or suffered from multiple diseases -as the swine flu wasn't very pathogenic.

      Has to do with the spikes on the virus. These are like keys that have to fit a cell so the virus can get in the cell and replicate. The virus keeps changing the composition of the keys every year so the immune system does not recognize the spike protein(key) on the virus. I think these spikes are also called peplomers. Unless the virus has gotten in cells and replicated the immune system just ignores the virus.
