I bought this pen from UK Amazon for £28.50 after watching this video. It came in a metal tin with the little steel tool included. It’s a beautiful pen in person, not too weighty but doesn’t feel cheap. I have inked it up with Diamine Eau De Nil and it writes beautifully. My husband the Diplomat fan loves it too! I’m left handed by the way.
I love that gray pen, and I’m a fan of bright colors! There’s something that’s just so beautiful and unique about it. I reminds me of thunderstorm clouds starting to swirl overhead on a really hot day just before the downpour starts (I love watching storms, too!) Man, that nib is fine, like extra super duper fine…but, it is a #6, so it can be switched out easily. Unfortunately, the enamel gray on the pen would be lost which adds to it’s beauty. This is one that’s been in and out of my cart for a while. I may need to make the leap before the tariffs hit us!
I wonder how many are aware of the origin of the “Rabbit Moon” name? In the West when we look up at the moon at night, from a young age we’re taught to see the face of a “man-in-the-moon”. However, in the Orient, tradition teaches that there’s a “rabbit on the moon making mochi (rice cakes)”. Having “western eyes”, it took me awhile-- but now I can clearly see the “Moon Rabbit” too. Lovely review! Thank you!
Great review, James. I have not ordered the N7 as I have the N6. They are essentially the same pen, save for the styling. It is a great writer with a nice weight and nicely balanced. The tool has the prongs to allow removal of the piston. Mine is steel, not brass and works very well. Thank you again for a great review. I like your technical term, "yada, yada, yada"😉
I was thinkin thoughts about getting one back when the green one came out and I thought gosh I wish they had it in red ... then they came out with the n7 in Maple leaf red OMG its so beautiful so I bought one and it should be here next week sometime I cant wait :)
I got the teal version from Amazon and it came with the metal tool. I love the pen. It is one of my favorites. Thanks for the tip on increasing the flow. Great video!
Great review, as always. FYI, I just received this pen today - you're undoubtedly responsible for several of my pen purchases - and it had a maintenance tool included that I have to think you influenced with this video. Haven't inked it up yet, but what a great pen. Thanks James.
Hongdian was my very first fountain pen purchase. I wanted to qualify for free same day delivery for Advil II on Amazon, so I added the $12 all black Hongdian fountain pen to my cart. Inked it with Montblanc Irish Green, my first ink purchase, and was completely underwhelmed: scratchy, way too fine, slow ink feed. I had to give fountain pens another chance, as I ordered the biggest bottle of Montblanc ink. Bought a TWSBI Go and Kaweco Sport from Jetpens and that's when I got hooked/saved. It's really nice to see Hongdian making new pens with higher quality materials nowadays. It looks like Hongdian recently hired a fountain pen enthusiast after watching this video.
I think they must have hired a more creative person staff, and they have been branching out into variations on their themes quite a bit. Good for pen folks!
Hey James, nice review. I bought the same Pen just after the video was posted. Mine came with a tool to disassemble the Pen. Either they forgot it with yours, or they changed it quite fast afterwards. Cheers
When will Hongdian realize that their public is ready for gold nibs on these magnificent piston fillers? Thanks for the great review as always, brother!
I have a peacock blue version. Grip section suppose to be glued, but it came unscrewed. Also nib is meh, but wing sung 699 nib fits perfectly and is better. Standard #6 nib does not fit. Also ink window isn't very good at checking ink level. Asvine P20 > HongDian N7.
I bought the peacock version - really wanted to like it, but was a very dry writer. Tuned the nib to be wetter, it then had flow issues - I found there was a large gap between feed and nib. Decided to pull the nib & feed, a process that took several days of soaking in dish soap & water, and more than a touch of violence to achieve. Having done that, I could get the nib properly adjusted, then use hot water to reshape the feed to the contour of the nib. At the end of the process (along with some work on the tipping with micromesh) it's a great writing experience, which is a pleasing match to the pen's appearance & proportions / feel. At some point in the process (possibly due to the soaking) the section started to unscrew from the ink window (it's supposed to be glued there) - which revealed that there's actually a screw-in unit that holds the nib & feed, it's just that it screws in from the reverse side, so you can't normally remove it. I've screwed the section back tightly, and it seems OK - it may need some thread locker to finally fix it, but there was some condensation trapped around the ink window that I'd rather not trap in there permanently.
Absolutely, I'm very pleased with the way it writes now. Makes me smile every time I use it - at least partly due to the challenges overcome in making it so.
Hi James, rare that you didn't notice that the cap says "Month Rabbit" instead of Moon Rabbit, don't know if it's an Easter egg or just a bad translation 🤭
Hi James, a little helpful hint for you about the HongDian N6, N7 & 100: These fountain pens have an ink capacity of approx. 1ml ex works. However, this can be significantly increased with a small harmless intervention. I found a video that explains this. The link attached here starts the video at the corresponding point at minute 8.30. ruclips.net/video/jaKSoxzlfT4/видео.html I hope this helps you as well as it helped me. Kind regards
Thanks! I'll have to remember this when I clean my N7 next time. I definitely has this gap. So does my TWSBI Eco, but that was caused by my impatience after the last cleaning. lol
I really like Hongdian and PenBBS tbf, they prove Chinese companies can be original and successful. I've always found Chinese companies making great pens, but so many of them are inspired by pre-existing designs, and invite the "copying'' discussion a lot.
Nice pen but I think less would have been more as far as decorations are concerned. The cap is too loaded. It detracts from the barrel. I would just keep the "moon bunny" medallion. Thanks for the review.
Reminds me of the old Dollar 717i Calligraphy pens. Frustratingly unreliable writers with wonderful stub nibs. The feed would suddenly stop. I will get one of these Hongdians and put a Bock or Jowo 1.1 number 6 on it if possible. .
7:36, "Just a little bit dry. Well, that's OK, that means it'll economize."
That really cracked me up. You sir are the definition of glass half full.

I also got mine from Amazon US this week (seller Asvine Store) and it included the wrench. I really love the pen!
Great job James! I like the look. Always enjoy seeing you sir 🙏💕

Beautiful in this grey version too! 😇🩷🙏🙌
Corrie Ten Boom, eh? My friend was a guide in their family watch shop in Haarlem NL. Very special place
It is a place that’s on my bucket list after we read The Hiding Place as a family.
Fantastic review, and I’m seriously considering pulling the trigger on one of these beauties.🤔
The Hongdian N7 would be such a striking demonstrator. I don't understand why they haven't released one. It would sell like hot cakes.
Very attractive pen, and I like HD pens, but I've got an N6, and can't really justify getting one.

Thanks for sharing your experience, and the info on the nib unit. Did you get it writing to your liking?
Absolutely, I'm very pleased with the way it writes now. Makes me smile every time I use it - at least partly due to the challenges overcome in making it so.
Hongdian n7 Vs twsbi eco
Can you guys give some thought
I like it
I think the pagoda etched on the nib is Fogong Temple rather than Temple of Heaven.
Possibly, I'm just going by the product description where I bought it for that information.
"You can't go around buying everything teal" - um, yes you can.
😂
Hi James, rare that you didn't notice that the cap says "Month Rabbit" instead of Moon Rabbit, don't know if it's an Easter egg or just a bad translation 🤭
I should have mentioned that! I don’t know what the deal with that is.
For what it's worth, some languages have the same word for moon and month. Russian, for example, although the more common word for moon is now luná.
@@blakeray9856 Yep. The Korean word for month and moon is 달, which is, I believe, influenced by Chinese.
You can get a tool (and box) for free if you order a pen from Amazon :)

Oh by the way did you ever recieve the ink I sent you I cant remember if you got it or not ? let me know thanks take care :)
I did, thanks again!
@@JG3Reviews awesome you are most 😁 welcome
they a black white red and green they are all ready for christmas colors :)
I’m out of the country, but the red one arrived this week. I look forward to it when I get home.
Nice pen but I think less would have been more as far as decorations are concerned. The cap is too loaded. It detracts from the barrel. I would just keep the "moon bunny" medallion.
Thanks for the review.
That’s one reason I chose this over the teal. I thought this was more subtle than the peacock feathers on that cap.
