2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - Review & Road Test

- The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV bridges lots of gaps such as the one between the larger mid-size three-row and compact two-row SUVs. It also walks the line between traditional combustion engine and full electric vehicle. But what does Micah Muzio from Kelley Blue Book think is the best part of the Outlander PHEV? Well, you're going to have to watch to find out.

I have leased a PHEV for a year now. I have had zero issues with it, 10 year warranty. I use it mostly for short trips in stop and go traffic, this results in 90% electric use ( 2L/100km ). The HOV lane access is also a huge time saver. EV charging gives me preferential parking in many spots and frequent free charging. I have no range anxiety with PHEV technology. It snows heavy in my location sometimes (Pacific Northwest), the AWD takes the snow on well. The reviewer questioned the "charging" button. This button is useful for recharging your battery when at freeway speeds, when you hit the stop and go traffic again you have a full battery. Other testers have said the charge button mode really does not reduce gas mileage. The take away for me would be don't buy this car if 1.) you do mostly highway driving because the fuel mileage is not the best without taking advantage of PHEV technology, 2.) you want a hot rod.
Funny thing is I got better gas mileage on the high in the regular outlander than the PHEV. Definitely not worth it for highway. Although I did see a review use the charge button on the highway then us only electric and keep doing that over and over and did save gas
Such a cool vehicle as long as you get PHEV rebates and a discount ... it’s quirky, but checks a lot of boxes
It's a real pleasure to own. Even without rebates, it's saving us massively on gas - we're averaging just 1.6L/100km (147mpg).
Well now it’s around 25k so it’s a steel and if there are any for 2021 it’s going to be even cheaper thanks to a new model coming in
Don’t know what it is about it, but that shot of the Tucson at 8:45 is very appealing lol.
looks even better in person 😍
got one for a month now, very happy with this car.
I named her PHOEBE :-)
Thank you. You are the 1st auto journalist to tell the politically incorrect secret of electric cars. Most are bought for the ability to drive with 1 person in carpool lanes. When the Prius first came out they got those stickers and sales in those places zoomed. When they took the stickers away, sales tanked in those places. This car is also sold in the UK and avoids London Congestion charges. When they did a survey of the drivers most never plugged in and ran them 100% on gas.
Would love to read that study. Can’t find it through Google.
Hmm, no carpool stickers where I live. No free parking, no tax advantages for a plug in (just for 100% electric). And still see more and more plug in hybrids on the market. Just ordered my 2019 Outlander plug in hybrid as well. Might be good to realize the world is a bit bigger then your back yard
The 25 mpg is off gasoline alone. With the electric combined you get over 60 mpg. Don't know why they confused everybody with that.
db60615 That really isn’t an accurate number because it depends on a short drive starting with a full battery. On an empty battery, the combined fuel economy becomes 25mpg, which means that for long trips, you will see a number close to the latter.
@@afcgeo882 false it's closer to 43mpg. The 25mpg was taken from the gas only outlander. The engines are different the PHEV has an atkinson cycle engine and connot go into gas only mode. The engine when running charges the batteries and excess engine power assist the electric motors
Hector Bedolla Do you not read? When out of battery juice and driving on gasoline only, the Outlander gets 25mph as tested by multiple online reviewers. Also, the engine only charges the battery if you have the CHARGE button pressed, which strains the main engine, so owners recommend doing it on a nice leveled highway only.
@@afcgeo882 lol go and try it. You cannot completely drain it. It always reserves 30%. The ignorance...
Hector Bedolla You can drain it. The way a lithium-ion battery is drained is that it will ALWAYS leaves an unusable reserve. That’s so that the battery never reaches a zero percent charge, which is likely to destroy the battery. As soon as the battery drains all its usable energy, in the Outlander, it switches to the ICE engine alone, unless you press the “charge” button.
You clearly know nothing about the Outlander.
I find RUclips reviews a necessary evil in my modern life, and you sir are a hilarious relief from the treasure trove of inane reviews. Well done KBB guy, well done. My laugh to video ratio is a little disproportional for a car review, and it's your fault. Continue doing god's work. What part of Socal do you hail from? Your surrounding looks very familiar.
You are missing in your review the fact that this car loses the acceleration when is going up hills for more than 10 miles since the cell battery gets depleted and at that point, the fan stop working and gets overheated. Did you try to go up hills in this car for more than 10 miles?
DC fast charge will take about 15 minutes to %80, full charge takes about 40 min
Only Californians (or EX-Californians) truly know that visceral pleasure of a carpool sticker.
Daniel Gross Those exist across the country.
An absolute bargain after you get a good price from a Mits dealer and than apply the huge tax credit. You dont get a lot of suv for $28k anymore. This is a steal.
Yep. And if your state has a tax credit going too then the deal gets even more appealing.
I just bought a brand new 2019 limited for about $31k Canadian + tax which is about $22k USD +tax. At this price for an awd suv with electric range, it's really hard to complain..
Carpool stickers are so ugly.. especially when I see them on a brand new shiny 530e or i3 stuck all over and almost always crooked.. there’s gotta be a more subtle way to identify them..
0ttoman but they’re just stickers. No more an eyesore than any other adhesive backed label people slap on their vehicles. Kinda a pain to remove though due to the security backing, but still.
No uglier than a Trump 2020 sticker.... I'm just saying. 😉
Alan Bowers except it’s on multiple sides of the car... and a brand new Tesla is not the same as a bumper sticker on a 20 yr old truck lol
There is in Canada. Different color license plates. Like in Ontario, normal plates have blue alpha-numeric characters, but “green” vehicles get green characters.
I'm so confused. I thought the 2019 upgraded to 13.8kwh and a 2.4L Atkinson cycle engine with more engine HP and more rear motor power. I'm trying to find out if this was the case for Canada.
Not in the US
Great tech, but like many others I feel there is still a stigma surrounding Mitsubishi's reliability, quality and refinement.
Alan Bowers I owned a 2013 outlander sport and that stigma proved to be very accurate. 🤦♂️
I currently own a 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer and the stigma is true. The dealer told me 2 days ago I need to replace the front/ rear struts, rear differential bushings, and catalytic converter for only $7000.
Sure, quality and refinement has been a dark spot for Mitsu for ten years, but I'll fight anybody who'll suggest that a fecking Mazda skyactiv or-some-bollocks is more reliable than a Mitsu.
@@chito1312003 Someone's been driving hard through town perhaps?
My co worker owns a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer CVT and 2.4al engine with over 140,000 miles and only normal maintenance. Has changed cvt fluid every 60,000. I love my 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE and our 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT AWC 2.4L. Both purchased new. Love the simplicity, warranty, standard loaded features and more!
Howdy, great review as always!😸😻😸
Haa Micah 🙌🏽🙌🏽👍🏽👌🏽 !! Auto like !
This is overall quite a compelling vehicle. A midsize SUV with reasonable power and 35 mpg or so? Very nice.
Plug it in and you'll get over 100mpg.
@@Secretlyanothername or well over 200 mpg's. My last gas fuel up was on at the end of September and since then I covered around 1,400 miles and spent about 5-6 gallons of gasoline :)
@@unitedwestand56 We're *only* getting 170mpg in ours.
@@Secretlyanothername I am sure that mine will drop to your level of gas guzzling as it gets colder and I start using climate control more :). Plus, it just feels unnatural to go to the gas station only once every few months, and, as I understand, the car will start burning a few gallons of old fuel automatically if it has been more than 90 days from the last fuel up.
The oil and oil filter interval change every 7,500 miles still doesn't make much sense to me since it is possible to drive this car at close to 90-95% electric, but it is still needs to be done to maintain warranty. I wish it was based on actual ICE usage time and not on mileage.
That is and a higher level of small but still annoying rattles in the car's interior, when compared to my previous vehicles, are so far my 2 biggest complaints about it (and I do understand those complaints are minor compared to what I get in return from this car).
@Blue Face My new 2019 PHEV GT was originally at around $43,000
- $7,000 factory rebate
- $1,500 dealership incentive
- $1,100 NYS EV rebate
- around $5,800 Federal credit
Final price - around $28,000
Mpg's after a 25 mile drive at around 35 degrees F today - 160. I did start with a fully charged battery.
No gasoline used on the same drive when it's warmer.
At almost 43 mpg on fuelly, the Outlander is smoking the RAV4 Hybrid by 5 mpg!
Yeah they say 25 mpg on gas only. But that is not true. The spec given is for a "Gas only" Outlander. The PHEV does NOT have a gas only mode. It is always in hybrid mode or EV mode. Also the 2.4L engine in the 2019 and 2020 are Atkinson cycle. The gas only outlander is not a Atkinson cycle engine.
Considering this, looks nice and I like the 22 miles electric range for the price
wait 6 or so months and an upgraded battery with about 30 miles of EV range is coming, one stop in your day and you can do 60 miles of running on nearly free electricity!
@@chrisw443 ok I’ll do that thanks
How come none of the review's I've seen of this vehicle mentions the battery degradation problem Mitsubishi has with this model! It's all over the internet/U Tube. I personally think it's a great car and would love to buy one but not until they sort the problem.
@Gerard Ferry Hi Gerard, check out 'unplugged EV' on u tube to find out all about it. Basically the range of the battery only driving diminishes as time goes by but more quickly than they should.
@@brynybach7741 check more of the "uplugged EV " video again, it was resolved by Andy himsellf.
Many reviewers only keep the car for a few days unfortunately and don't notice this big flaw.
45,000 miles later and mine is still constantly getting 20+ miles on a full charge.
almost bought one . almost.
@Gerard Ferry agree!
Would buy this if I could this car is amazing
It's also a 6 year old car beneath the skin and seats.
@@toyotaprius79 That's nice

A real in this segment in North America. Love the review - thanks!

Those things are so old by now, you could probably get one of those collector vehicle license plates
This design came out in 2014 with a face-lift in 2016. If that's old, what do you think of the Dodge Journey (2009), Jeep Grand Cherokee (2011), Nissan Frontier (2005)..? Sure, this vehicle isn't a class leader but it's not a bad choice especially for the price.
better than your gas guzzler though.
You have a charge button to charge the damn car on a long trip so you can get 50 to 74 mpg constantly. good god, never run this with a dead battery.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV when using electric and gas power is an equivalent 72 miles per gallon. Using gas only gets you just 25 mpg and electric power only get you 22 mpg.
25mpg ??? That's horrendous
Daniel Webb using electric and gas power is an equivalent 72 miles per gallon. Using gas only gets you just 25 mpg.
Alejandro_GT_Lancer Wrong. That’s only if you calculate using a short, 50 mile drive. Then, the longer your drive is without charging, the closer you will get to 25mpg... and quickly. The way you figure out the honest MPG rating is by depleting the battery and then seeing what MPGs you get as the car runs like a true hybrid.
@@AlejandroArchila1 25 MPG is for gas only model. The PHEV does not allow for engine only driving as it only has one gear in a fixed ratio. It is always in Hybrid or EV mode. And the 25 mpg is for the non Atkinson cycle engine.
@Gerard Ferry the Outlander Cannot do engine only. It only has one gear. It must use the electric motors. The engine when on provides power to the battery which turn the motors excess power from engine assist.
1:36 NEVER use an extension cord! warranty goes out of the window and it's a potential fire hazard! my 2019 Leaf states that i should never use it either. at least 1 family had their BEV burned down to the ground along with their house last year here in Sweden.
True with most thing just have to use a low impedance cord if you are going to use one. Gotta use the proper rating for the voltage and amperage draw.
What an absolutely terrible vehicle. If it wasn't for tax credit incentives, there would be no reason to buy this.
Battery pack has 2012* tech.
What's missing is that a few months ago the 12kWh battery and 2.0l otto cycle engine were updated to a 13.8kWh and 2.5l atkinson pairing with a 10kW boost to both front and rear motors.
@@toyotaprius79 where did you see that? Mitsubishi still lists the 2.0 and 12kwh setup.
@@toyotaprius79 Not for American markets sadly - it retains the old 2.0L otto engine & 12 kWh battery. The 2.4L atkinson & 13.8 kWh battery are likely 2020+ upgrades.
Alan Bowers That’s what they have in Europe now.
George L oh dang I didn’t know that, thanks for clarifying. Hopefully that setup trickles into US models to help improve performance against similarly priced competitors.
WTF Mitsubishi is doing?? What happened to the Mitsubishi pajero?
You should try the Australia and Asia release Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero instead :-)
I just wanted to see Mitsubishi’s infotainment, like the only reason why,
I've always called them the Outlandish.
why all the stickers? one on the hatch isn't enough?
If it had a 120 mile electric range, I would buy it.
it can happen with $10k more...just like the Teslas short and long range versions.
Go ahead!
I really think Mitsubishi is underrated. I know their glory days are over, I can admit that. However, they are ahead in many ways and people need to give them a chance. Their problem I think is in the interior for this car. It’s very boring and basic. Mitsubishi used to have interior that stood out and were eye catching.
I'm not going to lie but Mitsubishi has some nice cars.. well almost all of them are nice.. besides the interior, exterior looks beautiful on there cars..
I say this with all due respect, if you never owned a current Mitsubishi you shouldnt say that. They are horribly built. Just check reliability scores. I think you would change your statement with some real world experience. Mine has been a nightmare.
@@swanblake I hope you're truthful about that. Here in Europe, Mitsubishis are the go-to cars for farmers and other hard wearing drivers, and have been since the 90s. That reputation hasn't waned.
@@swanblake Maybe you've just never had a good car? Mitsubishi has nice cars.. have you seen there Lancers? They're very popular for them and they actually have a good reputation.. there looks on there csra are awesome.. maybe you should've never gotten a Mitsubishi if you didn't like them
Mitsubishi has a dying dealership network here in the USA. The US dealers were told to upgrade their dealership to a new Mitsubishi corporate standard (basically demolish old dealership and construct new Mitsu dealership facility) and many dealership owners told Mitsubishi to pound sand. A few in Florida just recently simply closed with zero notice to the public.
Just MIGHT want to educate yourself a bit before having questions 🤔🤔🤔
Can you review a PHEV after 1-2 years and report how much the degregation the battery has. You'll see how much the EV range goes down. New the car is great. After a year or two, the battery is trash.
There are relatively easy ways to reset it yourself. My dealer reset mine for free, too...so it's really not that big of an issue.
Your review is daft this isn't the new outlander lol
2.0l engine?
12kWh battery?
That can't possibly be right, can it Micah?
_If it is,_ then this is the "previous" mid-fresh Outlander. The later one extends virtual battery capacity to 13.8kWh and the engine is bored out to 2.5l but with a hybrid-appropriate atkinson cycle.
B Lowe 2.4l*
Maybe elsewhere but the US still has the 2.0L engine and the 12kWh battery for 2019.
Will you at some point consider what region of the world you’re in versus what region the car review is in? Cars differ around the world.
I will wait for the Model Y..... This 2019 would have been tempting if they up'd the battery and features.... Looks better than the 2018.
The Straight Pipes' review was way better.
WTF! 13 hours charging time, 12 kwh batteries, 2 electric motors only for a 25 combined mpgs?! What an absolute garbage that car is!
I. Fawzy I. Fawzy Using gas power only gives you just 25 mpg, Only electric power alone gives you 22 mpg, using electric and gas combine gives you around 72 mpg.
It's Mitsubishi. They suck now.
S Q To To he honest Mitsubishi make great reliable cars.
Don't they teach mathematics in Iraq?
13 hours at 120 volt, 3.5 on 240 volt, and 25 minutes on DC fast charge. I just plug mine in every night on 120 volt, just like my cell phone. No dig deal? If my battery goes dead I run on ICE, no range anxiety. This vehicle is about recapturing kinetic energy and taking advantage of mostly short trips in stop and go traffic.
What happened to the wheels? The 2018's PHEV wheels are leagues better, these look like they came off a minivan.
Who the f.... Cares about his sticker???😂
So I’m wondering why when reviewing a hybrid let alone a plug in , only one mention of fuel economy ( isn’t that the fun and point of these type of cars ?) Also 25 mpg !!!are you kidding me Mitsubishi !!!
My 2007 Dodge Dakota can squeeze 27 on the highway ,
Greg Palmer Daniel Webb using electric and gas power is an equivalent 72 miles per gallon. Using gas only gets you just 25 mpg.
That rating is for the gasoline outlander. The PHEV only has three drive modes: EV, Series hybrid or parallel hybrid. It never goes into gasoline only mode. They goofed the spec sheet probably overlooked it or lazyness.
I don't understand why you guys need carpool stickers, they're so ugly and unnecessary. Here in Quebec, EVs have green licence plates (instead of blue) and they also have access to the HOV lane like in California.
Vlad Saghin renewing stickers for the HOV lanes and renewing the license plate registration means more tax income for California
I get better mpg with my Hyundai Santa Fe, all gas power.
thats a joke..i have both cars.
I have a 2019 Outlander Sport it gets 30MPG and its all gasoline 2.0, and it was way cheaper this car is no good .

i drive to work 20 miles away back and forth...i only use electric...hows FREE for you?
bruhhhh hell no
Mitsubishi still exists?!? Plus the MPG sucks, esp w it being electric too! Lammme.
This is a dinosaur among green vehicles even the much bigger and 7 seat Chrysler Pacifica has more range of 33 miles and gets better gas mileage of 32 mpg
jared novak Daniel Webb The Outlander PHEV using electric and gas power is an equivalent 72 miles per gallon. Using gas only gets you just 25 mpg
It's a different vehicle. It's only 2WD, not AWD. Also the Outlander PHEV gives more control over EV modes than the Pacifica. Pacifica Hybrid is a great vehicle, but it's a Hybrid minivan 7 seater, not a SUV.
you drive your pacifica, ill drive my Outlander, lets see.
Imagine buying a 100k Tesla and paying extra for paint other than black just to end up putting a set of ugly stickers on the bumpers 🤦🏻♂️

Toyota is better than that.
a toyota PHEV? what model? i didnt know they have that... oh that brand war again and bias again lol
But Mitsu is a discount brand. Not everyone needs or wants all the stuff that Toyota throws in their cars. Mitsu is meant to be no frills, very basic but with competitive room and good warranty. People who have no problem affording Toyota's don't usually cross shop with Mitsubishi, they compare to Honda, Mazda, VW,. Mitsu almost went bankrupt not too long ago but Nissan/Renault stepped in and bailed them out. Unfortunately now it's Nissan/Renault that are in hot water and facing financial problems. Probably not the best partner for Mitsu to be part of lol.
Basically have to learn how to drive a car again to drive this. NO THANKS
I’ve owned an Outlander and will never purchase one ever again. Poor quality, noisy on the road due to minimum sound insulation and when it rained it sounded like it was pouring on top of a galvanized roof. And very poor pickup power.
This one is different.
maybe you bought a replica lol
This is the kind of vehicle, that a very sad person buys, and then wants to show off to you thinking they got a wonderful deal on a great car.
wow, ignorance and so Full of himself , or ley me say so Full of S*** hahaha
Once again, Mitsubishi is extremely underwhelming. This SUV just proves that the company has no intention of regaining its decreasing market share. If Mitsubishi was being honest with themselves, they should leave the North American market if they have no intentions of making compelling vehicles.
