    The 1997 Australian GP was my first time at an F1 race! In real life Villeneuve qualified a staggering 1.7 seconds faster than second place Frentzen, on a bone dry track. Even back then this was unheard of. Eighth place Jean Alesi was more than three seconds slower. JV's pole made the Lola drivers look glacial though they were still outside 107% of Frentzen's time.
    Lola had hoped to run their V10 but ended up using the same V8 engines as Forti from the year before.
    From memory the Formula Holden cars supporting the event in that era were lapping the circuit in the low 1:50s.
    I've always liked the Lola Mastercard livery. It'll forever baffle me why Mastercard couldn't wait until 1998, especially because of the massive rule changes that were about to be introduced - narrower cars and grooved tyres.

    It should be noted that while the Lola was actually pretty much dialled in im terms of the lap times compared to the actual qualifying from the Australian GP in 1997, HHF was seven seconds quicker than Villeneuve’s real-life pole time.

    A couple of minor historical points.
    Lola didn't EVER plan to race in 1997. Their plan was always to enter in 1998 until Mastercard pulled the stroke of insisting they rain in the 97 season or they'd pull backing, despite Eric Broadley's objections. Lola thus had only just started developing the car assuming they had a year to get it perfect, and then had to get it designed, built and out the door in a matter of weeks.
    Also they did indeed make it to Brazil and both cars were assembled and sitting in the garage ready for practice when the funding collapsed and the team more-or-less folded on the spot.

    It's crazy to think that one of the worst F1 cars that is 25 years old is still 13 seconds a lap quicker then a modern Supercars touring car (Scott McLaughlin set a record lap in qualifying of a 1:53.8 in his Penske mustang) it just shows how fast F1 cars really are.

And also the first ever recorded time under 2'07 (in a Supercar) at the time.

    The strange thing is this mod makes the car simultaneously worse and better than it actually was. The car is a bit too far off of the pace compared to where the real thing was... but at the same time it also doesn't have the two strangest issues the Lola had:
    - The gearshift being chronically slow.
    - The rear suspension being poorly made and directly in the path of the exhausts causing it to heat up so much it began to soften and bend significantly under load after several laps.
    Fun video start to finish!

    If Mastercard weren't so heavily pushing the team to enter in 1997, I think Lola would've been a decent F1 team probably mid pack but still better than what we got. And poor Vincenzo Sospiri, he was described by Michael Schumacher as "My hero. He and Senna inspired me so much in Karting." And all he got to showcase his talent in F1 was this abomination of a car.

    ASR is currently creating high quality mods of the entire 91 F1 season. That includes the shit cars (Fondmetal, Brabham, Modena [pseudo factory Lamborghini team] etc...) he's currently developing the Coloni too, which in 1992 would become the infamous Andrea Moda.

    • @jamescampbell1070
      @jamescampbell1070 2 года назад

      Oh and the Fondmetal is particularly horrible...

    • @peterdaviesracing
      @peterdaviesracing 2 года назад +1

      @@jamescampbell1070 Which is funny, as the '92 car showed promise IIRC. At least the design idea seemed to go the right way aerodynamically as Tarquini had some decent Q sessions, but the team didn't have the budget to develop the car and it would break down too often.
      The '91 Brabham got its shit together to score points though, if you want a '91 example, take the small AGS team. Or Footwork, trying to recover from the Porsche mistake. Or Ligier with it's overweight engine and chassis I think. Even Leyton House(March) fell back that year and scored like one point.

    A few people asking: what time period would this car be compettitve in? The answer is probably some time around 1979-80. They were at 113% of the pole time in Melbourne. If we look at pole times at Monaco, 113% of the 1997 pole time is around the 1978 pole time. However in 1978 the Nouvelle Chicane hadn't been installed yet so the track was a bit quicker; therefore it's likely that the Lola was probably half a second to a second quicker than those cars, so add another year or so on to compensate...
