  • Whereas jade is considered the most valuable of precious materials in China, in the West the diamond holds that honour. A mere mention of the word conjures an image of this stone's magic. The lifetime of a diamond is independent of that of man: they pass from owner to owner, and their histories are recounted with awe. Among the most famous, the blue Hope Diamond brought misfortune to its successive owners: kings of France, a prince, a sultan, a banker, a rich heiress.
The diamond's wrath is rooted in its origin: having been snatched from an Indian temple, the Hindu goddess to whom it was dedicated has been angered ever since. Then there is the famous Taylor-Burton Diamond, emblematic of fantastic Hollywood love affairs?
When it was put up for auction in 1969, it was Cartier who first succeeded in buying it, despite competitive bidding by Richard Burton. However, almost immediately following the sale, Burton acquired the diamond from Cartier, who had briefly named it the Cartier Diamond.
In Far Eastern decorations, there exists a 'diamond' motif, which takes the form of a series of lozenges. If the stone itself seems almost unknown in both China and Japan, it is nonetheless highly recognized in sacred Buddhist texts, where it is treated as having an incomparable aura.
The stone, whose glittering appearance and hardness are unmatched, surpasses all other gems. Its name- vajra--is used for the liturgical ritual object of Hindu origin. This, the weapon of the god Indra, is a symbol of the indestructibility and capacity of each of us to overcome all obstacles.
