I sold the Rolex Sub for $14k. I bought the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 43.5mm black dial and Seamaster 300m 42mm blue dial. With the leftover money I'm debating on getting a Omega Aqua Terra! Omega is 🔥🔥🔥

“I like the privacy and discretion that comes with not wearing a Rolex in public.” A bright orange and polar white Omega PO is def what I’d reach for if privacy and discretion was my aim too! Sorry I jest, I think I’d choose that PO myself of these two. I nearly bought one this week but import duty made it not quite work.
Believe me (and believe Tim)--few people--apart from watch guys--will notice your Omega with an orange bezel. There are Citizens and Invictas that are fare more gaudy. You could wear it with short sleeves on the subway or in a bar or while running errands with no worries. Wear a big Rolex that way and lots of people will notice--for good or ill.
@@highnrising nobody notices my watches whatever I wear, I own several Rolex watches amongst other brands. The only watch I’ve owned people noticed was actually a two tone Omega constellation. I think it’s a fair point that discretion and bright Orange do not go hand in hand myself.
Only thing I don't like is it's too hard to tell if you're looking at 6oclock or 12oclock on the Omega. If you pick it up in the dark it's hard to tell if it's upside down. The Rolex has a clear 12 o'clock triangular index. In the video here, I can't tell what time it is on the Omega.
Bought a "cream sickle" PO three months ago and love it. Not small but still fits under a shirt sleeve for me. The lume is great and seeing the dial in person was awesome.
I have the 42mm blue liquid metal in a blue strap. In my opinion, it’s the perfect size and an unbelievably beautiful watch. The Omega is simply more interesting as it’s not obvious what is on your wrist.
I have to agree with the sizing and your liquid metal edition is beautiful, great piece, I have a 42mn PO 2500 with matte black dial/ black bezel with white tri arabics and I do think the first gen 2500's are the best looking and proportioned of the line.
I own both and got to say the PO Creamsicle is more dramatic on the wrist, wears better and better over all design. It’s a bargain for all it brings. The ceramic full lume bezel makes it the “lume king” of all dive watches. It also wears smaller than its size spec would show and as comfortable as my Sub. My DSSD JC (12 series) bezel to dial ratio is off and its thickness is more noticeable. The dial just looks too small on the DSSD for its case size. Taking the dive extension off from the bracelet is mandatory to enhance a better balance. The case back is flatter and helps comfort over the SD43. In the end the PO is still a much more comfortable and featured packed diver over the DSSD. FYI: wrist presence of the Creamsicle is huge and get compliments all the time because of the design/look of the watch. It looks expensive without that first initial name recognition which is kinda cool in an organic sort of way. So there is an owners point of view.
The economic reason for choosing the Omega PO versus the Rolex Sea Dweller cannot be understated! Sure, the Sea Dweller is an investment watch and can be sold for more than retail. But you're paying a HUGE premium for the sea dweller, if you could even find one at retail in the first place! And for daily wear, the PO is much better because it does not carry all the negative marketing baggage like a Rolex. Omega PO is also so much better for privacy and discretion! Plus, as Tim said, the color and strap options for PO are far better. Omega PO is the winner.
I love the Deepsea, dont get me wrong, but the Omega, specially with that color, is so fresh, so different. The Deepsea is just identical to the sea dweller, which is identical to the submariner...
The Sea Dweller is just awesome but I will say I'm a bit biased to my 42mm Planet Ocean 2500 matte black dial/black bezel with white tri arabics, it's still a stunner that I appreciate more than ever with it's classic looks.
I own the 2013 Deepsea and a 2019 blue Planet Ocean. If I'm going to wear a large diver, I actually wear the Planet Ocean. On a bracelet, both watches weigh about the same, but the weight distribution on the Omega is much better since the Planet Ocean's bracelet weights quite a bit more than the Oyster. My wrist is larger than Tim's and frankly, I just still find the PO a much more comfortable watch for daily wear. It's possible the newer Deepsea wears better, but I'm not buying any more dive watches for a while.
I always root for the underdog myself. Especially Omega. I like that Omega is willing to do left field stuff sometimes. Think Rolex would ever put that orange on anything but a GMT hand, or make a central tourbillon. fully white, fully ceramic watch. All the rest of it.
@@styx4947 id say making a watch capable of 3900 meters of water resistance is pretty left field. Not to mention things like the rainbow daytona which has a bezel of 36 different sapphires...but sure, orange bezel is crazy wild lol
I’m so glad to see these PO’s popping up on YT, I’ve been drooling over this color combo for a bit and I just cannot get over how much I like the Omega Other than Daytona’s and SkyDwellers, I could never see another Rolex and be just fine.
Unfortunately the lumed bezel on the Omega is strictly for the orange and white model, as far as I’m aware. The hour adjust function for time zones is not available on the 39.5mm version as far as I know. I honestly like the looks of both, although I don’t need a brand on my wrist that’s screaming “take me”, even though I’m pretty confident in my ability to defend myself. I personally think the Omega is the better made watch, however the Rolex has an X factor with its longevity aesthetically. Unless Omega decides to never change this watch up, which they could given that the Seamaster Diver hasn’t changed much in around 30 years.
Almost true. There is a Seamaster chronograph that uses the same bezel, but instead of using this white ceramic dial, it uses a ceramised titanium dial that (IMO) looks super nice with the bezel. It’s almost a brownish gray color. But that dial/bezel combo is only available on their steel POs. Can’t get it on the grade 5 Ti POs.
As usual, you have nailed it,Tim.Two fabulous watches,I would love them both. The rolex is difficult to obtain,at retail. The omega is not ! A superb video.
Throw the Tudor Pelagos in the mix and where do we end up. 1. Less cost of three 2. Titanium 3. Smaller 3. Amazing clasp 4. Lumed bezel 5. 70hr power reserve 6. 5yr warranty 7. Available immediately and can even get a discount (5-10% in UK) 8. Tudor sports watches seem to beholding their value here in the UK
Same with me; black dial and bezel on bracelet personally. I must say I'm glad Tim made sure to mention that more "conventional" colour choices exist this time (although I can also appreciate him saying he'd still pick this crazy organs and white one anyway). In a previous PO600 vs Sea-dweller video he used an orange and black Omega (with the rubber bezel insert), then used the orange details as a point against the versatility of the Omega (ultimately using that point to give the win to the Rolex), even though a more versatile all black model exists. The comment section dragged him quite heavily for that, so I'm glad he seems to have learned his lesson.
On the Omega Planet Ocean you only operate the Helium escape valve inside a dry decompression chamber during your decompression and leave it open until your on the surface, if you need to go and have a shower either take the watch off or close the valve while in the shower then when dry reopen the valve. I have popped the face off a vintage Omega 300. I own an Omega 300 Professional, Pelagos 42mm and an Oris Professional titanium. I would buy the Planet Ocean as I don't want to tell an AD my life story , while he judges my worthness just to buy a watch. Anyone can walk into an Omega shop and buy a watch and be treated the exact same as anyone else.
I wish Omega would’ve made it standard on all the PO’s to have an illuminated Bezel on them. Or for that matter if the white dial would come with a grey or black bezel. I think that would look great. I’ve had this watch on my radar and I’m close to pulling the trigger. Just need to decide on 40mm or 42mm
In my life I have always eventually gotten bored with a watch and sold it to buy a new one, slowly working my way up to 'nicer' watches. Truth is, if you can find this Rolex at MSRP you could sell it at almost any time in the future for more money. I've owned three Omega watches, including the original and the 8500 Planet Ocean, and each lost me money. My local AD is selling this exact Omega, refusing to budge on the price, which is idiotic, but were I to buy it I'd lose at least a grand on the first day, probably another grand or two during my ownership of it. So the net cost of selling and moving up to a nicer watch down the road would be even greater. And for me, that proof of concept, that 'market value' means something. I definitely like the display back and quickset hour hand on the Omega, but I hate the He valve and the clasp isn't great. And if I were to sell my Rolex and replace it with this Omega, I'd feel like I had downgraded. All that said, if you are a first time buyer and want a nice watch. Or you've owned some cheaper watches and want to move up, I'd say the Omega is a great watch. Especially if you find one at the right price. Odds are you are not going to find a Rolex, and even if you could it would be double the price (or even more gray/used).
Omega should make a PO with white dial and the blue or black bezel, just like the SM300. And add the fully lumed bezel. The current black and blue PO bezels arent fully lumed.
"If you do not want to get robbed and killed", Omega is the choice. Should be Omega's new marketing campaign. Putting aside getting robbed, I like both. But, the orange and white rocks and I would pick the Omega if had to choose. The lume on it is awesome, too.
I own a black Planet Ocean XL purchased like in 2010, it is a tank and watch I wear daily.. Just got the 2022 DSSD in black and it is so comfortable and feels lighter than my Omega. I love both watches and would never choose one over the other it's like picking one kid over the other :)
I have the same omega watch super good quality very well built and beautiful looking watch bought one second hand 2020 model calibre 8900 black with steel bracelet for 3.9k£ definitely worth the price
I'd say the PO if you want a diving "beater" watch that you can wear everyday and not be worried about giving it some abuse, but the Deepsea would be the five tool watch that ticks off all the boxes. I have seen it up close in person and it is a gorgeous watch. I'd choose the Deepsea hands down.
Why this comparison? If you're going to compare the Deep Sea to an Omega, it should be the Ploprof--Omega's deepest diver and designed to show itself off as a super-deep diver. The Planet Ocean is just a sports watch for everyday wear.
I agree, the Deepsea should be compared to the Proplof, and the standard Sea-Dweller would be more comparable -- on specs and price -- to the Planet Ocean.
Agree, but… I think Tim picks what to showcase based partly on what crosses his desk in any given week, and therefore he needs to sell. It’s probably not a coincidence that the creamsicle PO has shown up in several Tim videos in the last few weeks. (In a week where a Ploprof crosses Tim’s desk, then we’re more likely to see new Ploprof videos from him, I think.)
The dark blue/black fading effect dial on the Rolex representing the dark depths of the ocean is a stunning touch. I'd definitely have the Omega though. Open case back, coaxial escapement and much better price point. That lume shot as well 😍 it's a no brainer
I love the Deepsea but would never opt for any diver of that size unless the case/bracelet was grade 5 titanium. Steel is not a good option in watches this size.
The Deep-sea is an objectively amazing watch, but subjectively I actually kind of hate it. Normally the only real issue I have with Rolex's watches is the hideous Cyclops magnifier, yet somehow it looks worse without it here, mostly thanks to the way the date awkwardly sits away from the chapter ring. Then we get to the size. Omega has always made watches that are a little (sometimes a lot) too big and thick, yet they've always managed to hide that size well, as seen here with the 16.5mm thick PO600 managing to wear like a 15mm thick Sea-dweller or Fifty Fathoms. The Deep-sea somehow goes the other way, managing to make its 17mm look even thicker, while also looking 1-1.5mm bigger than the 0.5mm smaller Omega. Inversely, while the simpler Omega clasp might be easier to live with day-to-day, the Deep-sea glidelock clasp is the single best dive watch clasp ever, no exceptions, period. And I don't really care that the orange version of the Omega's bezel is fully lumed, I'd still much rather a more understated black or blue model.
I don't get the Sea Dweller. I own the Submariner, a perfect sports watch. Why would anyone sacrifice the thickness of the submariner to get such a depth rating on the Sea Dweller. Nobody is saturation diving with this watch, it's thick and chunky. Submariner a much better do-everything watch. In this matchup, the Omega wins hands down on wearability alone.
Omega all day and twice on Sundays. I recently bought the Seamaster 2010 Vancouver Olympics limited edition Omega...red bezel and white dial. Even better looking than the Omega in this video. Love it. Red bezel contrasted with a white dial is very attractive.
I would always rinse a Rolex after immersing in sea water as salt crystals could form in the links and cause wear. Also, heaven forbid, a few grains of sand get in there. Just wondering: just imagine the weight of that watch in solid gold.
"Battleship anchor tied to a bank vault"...great analogy. I daily wore an 116660 DSSD for 5 years before selling it (at a profit!) but am now waiting for a 126660 to come in. I actually liked the blockiness of the 116660 but thought that the bracelet should be proportionately wider to the case. The Glidelock is magic!
While Tim ultimately gives a qualified nod to the Omega, when go over the pluses of the Rolex, he uses the phrase "advantage Rolex" so many times I lost count. When going over what the Omega has over the Rolex, he never once uses the "advantage" phase....a lot of deep bias on display there....
How would one even tell what you're wearing? The only time I get a watch comment is when someone is sitting next to me. Other than that if I'm walking around or minding my own business no one can tell. I get more compliments or remarks on my fashion watches than my luxury watch. Unless they stare or look for the logo no one knows.
Weird but Tim you picked the Rolex over a spring drive Grand Seiko diver in a different video, now you are picking the Omega over the Rolex? So…this Omega is your choice over both the Rolex and the grand seiko?!!! Really?
The DSSD bezel is horrible… it has ridiculous play between clicks and I have come across several DSSD bezels that were poorly aligned with the dial including the one I have…
Owned a titanium PO in blue. Currently own the black dial DSSD. Whilst I loved my PO, the build quality of the DS is on a whole ‘nother level. The shape, the finish, the feel is just that much better. Obviously, you pay for that, and I was lucky enough to get mine from my AD! If you’re buying for $ value, you’re unlikely to buy either watch, let’s be fair. Neither are cheap and there are numerous other options. Great video, Tim, as always. Keep these up, they’re great. How about the Rolex GMT vs Omega PO GMT? That’s a much fairer fight in my eyes.
What you said about fitting under a cuff isn’t true for me. I have my shirts made with a deliberately larger left cuff, so I can wear the Deepsea, Offshore, Submersible, etc., at work. Think outside the box.
Fair point, and let's be honest, if you can afford to spend thousands (or tens of thousands) on a watch, you can also definitely afford to get your shirts made to measure. Alternatively, in my case, the thickness of these pieces doesn't bother me much because I'm not the type to wear a chunky sports watch with a suit (I'm one of the few remaining dress watch users, although I'm admittedly a dying breed), so it honestly doesn't matter if it'll fit under a dress shirt cuff, as I would never pair the two together anyway.
@@MichaelGazeley i find the amount of money we are all so willing to spend on these watches to be truely desturbing. There is so much suffering in the world and even in USA. Planet Ocean by a knockout! Thanks for a truly thoughtful and practical comparison Tim.
Honestly I want both
I prefer the smaller hour markers of the Rolex.
I like that ♎️🍊
Great review, thanks
Whatever coffee this guy drinks before recording these videos, I want to know the brand! Damn he's dialed in!
Omega for me.
If they made a 43mm sub I would be all over it. 40mm is just too small for my wrist especially in a sports watch.
I'd go with the Planet Ocean if you're looking for size.
The Omega is just perfect! Seeing the movement is a game changer for my dollar. MUCH more bang per buck
I’ll have the Omega. I sold a Datejust to get a Globemaster and some chenge.
Omega blows Rolex away
The deep sea 🌊😍😍
No Vagabondage III Vs Zeitwerk? :.................................(
"Battleship anchor tied to a bank vault"...great analogy. I daily wore an 116660 DSSD for 5 years before selling it (at a profit!) but am now waiting for a 126660 to come in. I actually liked the blockiness of the 116660 but thought that the bracelet should be proportionately wider to the case. The Glidelock is magic!
Omega for me 😎👏and I will be going one in the next few weeks and I will be so happy 😎👏👌
Now, you'll have to remake this video with the Omega Ultra Deep.
omega
Omega everyday. Although, I do like the face of the Rolex. Love the lume on the Omega too.
Fantastic review - the best overview of these watches I've seen
Omega all the way!
Omega, better movement and price
Rolex for me. Better brand recognition, better secondary market multiplier.
If you can get one
Wow. I love the JC DeepSea but damn that PO crushes Rolex's soul.
Omega for me, based on price, functionality, choices and discretion of the timepiece.
even on your wrist thats pushing it. lol. but I think you have the 'panache'.
Superb comparison as usual, Tim. The PO looks great but I'll stick with my Jimmy Cameron 😊
Really?
No question. Omega with the knockout.
The DSSD bezel is horrible… it has ridiculous play between clicks and I have come across several DSSD bezels that were poorly aligned with the dial including the one I have…
I prefer the Omega; even at equal pricing. Rolex is a status symbol, but their design architecture is not appealing to me.
Omega all day long!
Omega 🖖
@@gpearce11 I have lots of dress watches too. But I almost always end up buying LARGE dress watches (complications) as well! 😅
I think that us just absolutely ridiculous. What else do you waste your money on? How much do tou give to charity?
@@stevenbriandunn5648 What part is ridiculous?
@@MichaelGazeley i find the amount of money we are all so willing to spend on these watches to be truely desturbing. There is so much suffering in the world and even in USA. To actually start to customize your shirt cuffs to fit over these obscenly gigantic watches is to me like the fool who had his thumbs filed down so he could text easier on his iPhone. The rule is you should donate min of 10% of your net income to charity. If you do great if not I not want to hear about your obscene obsession with your self. God is pissed
Geez Deepsea just kicks that rear end!!
Omega great watch;
Rolex tougher than a 4.50 c strip joint Steak!!!
