- Once called a ‘bomb truck with guns’ by the US Air Force, the AC-130J Ghostrider is a next-generation gunship with the tremendous advantage to engage ground targets silently and stealthily.
Incidentally, the Ghostrider also happens to be the most heavily armed aircraft ever built, carrying a standard 105-millimeter cannon, a smaller 30-millimeter GAU-23 A Bushmaster side-firing chain gun, and several types of state-of-the-art laser-guided missiles.
The Lockheed fixed-wing aircraft is also continuously updated with the latest technology, complete with the most requested weapons system in the history of warfare, making it the ultimate battle plane and the stuff of legends...

Back in the 70s, calling in Air Support was always ……. exciting. Having Spooky announce “on station, where ya want it?” and then make the guns run was awesome to see from the ground. But they always stayed pretty far up. It was when the A-10s came in and you could wave at the pilots…….now that was downright impressive.
LOL The warthog! Years ago, when I saw a documentary on it, I fell in love as if it was a Boxer Dog! The one thing is, I THINK it fires so fast that the gun can only last 20 seconds or so before running out of ammo.
@@Davethreshold i think its even faster that it can run out of ammo but also did you know that if it DID carry more ammo and held down the trigger the the recoil would make the aircraft possibly stall.
I only got to call in a couple of CAS missions with FA-18s...still kinda a shock with how informal the pilots are on the radio the first time I called in a strike lol
@@Davethreshold my dad flew A10's in the late 80's. He said they used to see who could bump the trigger quick enough to only shoot off one round (they have a round counter on board). He said no one ever got it, and that a typical blip of the trigger shot 20 or so rounds.
Having Spectre overhead for our ODA was always a good time. You just felt almost invincible bc u knew for a fact that the word gunship struck fear into the hearts of taliban, isis, & insurgents everywhere
I remember my days as a young airman back in the late 90’s working on the AC130 H and the AC 130 U model. I remember the long night of cleaning barrels and maintains the 20mm, 25mm, 40mm, and 105 mm.
Thanks for Your service.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention I never thought about the maintenance the beast took
yes the aircraft was a beast to work, I have memories of many u informs that were ruined due to the grease, hydraulic fluid and oils. But it is such a great machine and amazing how it is is able to support such powerful weapons. Also a fun fact on the outside of the aircraft on the 105mm there is a single nut about the size of a fist that is used to mow sure when the 105mm is fired it does not fly out the other side of the plane. It was dubbed the Jesus Nut
If I remember correctly, AC 130’s only had 1 free pallet station. As a Port Dawg, we had to go over to AC 130s a couple of times to help load a pallet.
@@a.mathis9454 from what I remember there was only space on the ramp but on the models I worked that was taken up by collapsing seats so on the AC130 H/u model there was no available pallet spaces that I could see there being

My grandfather flew in a Lancaster bomber as the navigator, 187 squadron.
The lancs registered name was c for Charlie
The crew called it Spooky
I far as I know it was the original Spooky Charlie back in WW2 .
This plane was credited with downing 4 night fighters in one sustained attack over Holland at night .
The rear gunner was unable to leave the turret by the end of the attack due to the sheer amount of spent brass trapped his legs in place.
Props to your Grandad. Fine men all that kept us safe. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Watching Spooky go to work is terrifyingly fun. They make you feel safer when you know you are outgunned. If you have never been ambushed by a superior force or a well secured force you will not understand. Thank God for Spooky!

The main test pilot and his crew for that series was one of the best! VX-20 nailed it! Amazing! That program moved so fast and god bless them for it! The words Gunship and engaging steathly have never been so complicated to pronounce toghether.
@Robert Sears Is it though? Your best odds of survival come from not being spotted. If spotted, your next best bet is not getting hit. Tanking a hit is a last resort, especially for planes which inherently can't have ridiculous amounts of armor. Ground-based anti air systems have continued to evolve, as have guided munitions, hence why it's now cheaper and safer to launch ranged precision strikes while unspotted than to run in guns blazing. It's a lot safer for friendly forces on the ground, too.
The AC130 is one of the best and deadliest too. The crews who fly them are some real badasses! #1
Don't they kill the crew too
@UCdlJ9SAQd1wKgXnaggGtY8g yeah i watched it before and he talked about 2 out of 5 guys who would work aboard the ac 130 would develop some kind of cancer in their later years. i actually think the percentage was higher
What about flying in a completely controlled and uncontested airspace against targets that have no chance of returning fire is badass? Don't get me wrong, fair fights are for suckers, but pride cometh before the oh shit we can't fight anything but insurgent groups, and even then not very well, fall.
Unfortunately for them most of them get lead poisoning from all the ammo fired from the gun ship.

I have always loved the 'HERC' and it will always be in my top 10. Admittedly I have never personally been lucky enough to fly on this type, but have flown many times on its workhorse cousin. Its amazing just how quickly this plane gets airborne. The aircrew rolled the aircraft inverted and over G'ed it, sending itstraight into a museum after it landed. Not sure what actually happened to it afterwards, but it definitely wasnt airworthy anymore.
The thing is this and the a10 are probably the best thing a troop on the us side can see but for the enemies the worst. This is most likley the best collaboration of the air force pilots and the us ground forces in recent times
When I was a Marine in Vietnam I watched Puff the Magic Dragon laying down streams of mini gun fire. It was impressive. Years later when I read they were moving the same concept on steroids to the C-130 I knew it was going to be special.
Just the sound of an old dc3 in the night, then it got quiet, and then all hell broke loose! I've got time exposure slides of puff lighting up a hill on night by Nah Trang
@@maryhines322 I've got time exposure slides of the same effect. I was on guard duty on the north end of DaNang airbase. With jets turning up 24/7 listening for infiltrators was out of the question. So I brought a camera along with a telephoto to help me scan. When Puff opened up I settled the camera on a sandbag and opened the shutter.
My favorite thing is that the 105mm Howitzer is considered it’s ‘standard’ gun
None of the videos or photos shown are an AC-130J model. There are AC-130U/H's in there and a ton of slicks, but no AC-130J models. I work on them daily and have worked on all the previous AC-130 models lol.
I've been brushing up on my WW2 history recently. I can't help but think of what a difference even a basic version of this could have made in the Pacific campaign. Imagine a few of these on Guadalcanal for the marines to call in when needed. Artillery lacks line of sight and radios aren't great in bad conditions. This puts the artillery anywhere it needs to be and with eyes and brains on the scene as it happens.
Not really, it would have gotten shot down by flak or fighters
@@bean5050 True, air superiority is a prerequisite for its use. Still that kind of small unit highly local fight is where this concept shines.
I also wonder if airframe technology of the time would have been able to support this kind of weaponry. The Bofors gun was available at the time, but I wonder how much it would have impacted flight range to reinforce the airframe enough to withstand repeat recoil from a gun of that size. Lack of night vision technology also would have made it vulnerable to fighters and AA since it would have to fly during the day and low enough to be able to reliably hit targets with greater accuracy than naval guns or dumb bombs. IIRC the only night vision scopes at the time required an infrared spotlight, I expect that tech probably wouldn't scale up to the gunships of the time.
@@atomic_wait agreed, you couldn't stick a big gun out of the door of a dc3 and expect results. However, modified versions of existing systems for a special purpose were not uncommon then. Secondly, the expected casualty rate was higher. Sure that DC3 with iron sights couldn't be anywhere near as accurate as today, but they would have had the advantage of instant intelligence, they can see what is happening and respond accordingly. An artillery strike is firing according to instructions/blind. Those instructions rely on a radio which is notoriously unreliable. This thing only needs to be over the target and doesn't need any further instruction. Historically, air superiority was the reason it didn't happen. The allies simply didn't rule the air and hence make something like this useful. Look at the emphasis on aircraft in following cold war for proof of that lesson being learned. Once you own the air, many more things are possible.
@@forksandspoons7272 Seems like the allies effectively ruled the air by the last stages of the war, but by that point the order of the day was simply saturation bombing and shelling entire cities, so no great need for precision artillery from the sky I imagine.

One word: BEAST!
My favorite multi-prop aircraft gets a MAJOR upgrade! Great news! Sure would like to take a spin! Thanks, DD!
I love the A-10 and it’s capabilities for close support of ground troops. In the Air Forces attempts to retire the platform they cited F-35s and B-52s as the platforms to take over the A-10s duties. IMO those are ridiculous replacements on many levels and thankfully Congress got it right stopping the retirement of the A-10s. However, these AC-130 gunships are capable of supporting our ground troops at standoff distances due to the accuracy of their firepower placing ordinance with precision. I hope the Ghostrider program is expanded further and used more often as it does not have to enter the combat zone and place itself in harms way as the A-10s must do.
I wish the A-10's were moved entirely over to Army and Marine control. The AC-130J's would be a good candidate also IMHO. Let the zoomies stick to sky battles and space whilst the legs get inhouse air support from their own!
The AC-130 is much more vulnerable to ground fire due to speed and altitude at which it can engage targets. The A-10 is an all weather attack aircraft. The AC-130 is really a single weather condition (night) attack aircraft. They put down a massive amount of hate but if you are in a daytime TIC, A-10s (and rotary) are where it is at.
As much as I love the A10 it's now not as much of a bs statement as to say the A10 is now out of date. Especially in peer to peer conflict where large ammount of Manpads, missle equipped SPAAGs, and modern high hit ratio missles are common.
Remember even tho the A10 has been updated it came from an era where MANPAD systems were practically nonexistent or were as reliable as harsh language and the biggest threats were other planes or radar guided SPAAGs.
Woe to those that have to face both the A-10 and the AC-130 in coordinated attack runs.
@@00Athus1 I would agree that the A-10, while still being able to kill a tank, is much more likely to be killed in that role as well. They do pretty well killing everything else though.
Achieving Air dominance with f35 and other fighter planes is great, but having an angle eye over the top is such a moral booster for the ground troops. I hope India too procures/ develop platforms like A10s and these c130 soon.

They just replaced the old 105 with a brand new variant that is lighter and more accurate with fewer parts and a significantly lower operational cost. The guns they replaced were all old Vietnam era weapons that were long overdue to be replaced.
Id actually like to see them replace the 30mm cannon with one (or a pair!) of the newer 50mm Bushmaster chain guns. Add a GAU-22A 25mm rotating cannon or go back to a pair of 20mm Vulcans and keep the Griffin and Hellfires and try to quantify the abject destruction left in its shadow.
50mm with programmable fuse for air bursts would be horrifyingly effective.
I’m not sure you would need smaller bore (and shorter range) Gatlings with a pair of these
At higher altitudes the 20mm cannons started to tumble through the air instead of spinning like normal rounds, hence why they went 30mm

You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have gunships with frickin’ laser beams attached in the fuselage!
Kind of weird that they didn't match up most of the video with what was being mentioned and put in a few clips of stuff that either hasn't been used in over a decade (i.e.-gattling gun and boffors) or normally doesn't apply to the aircraft; although the PSP has the ability to "quickly" drop the gun package pallet out of the plane, it would be exceedingly rare to revert it back to drop paratroopers. Once they have the rear door converted, there wouldn't be room for parachute dropping cargo (although the rollers are still under the gun mission pallet). I'm surprised they didn't give more kudos to the 30mm chain gun. That is one heck of a system and they pretty much never came back with any leftover ammo. They also go through continual improvements, not just big chunks of changes that span several aircraft. This means pretty much every single one of these planes ends up being somewhat unique even if they're part of the same "block". I was honored to be part of the GWS group for a couple of years. Lots of neat stuff they do with these planes.
