    Quick thing kan just to justify hyce's answer the Brits actually had 3 diferent steam engines that they put in to a test to see which one of them will be the one to be the starting point for the british railways though it wasn't called like that until the 1950s becouse there were 4 diferent companies in England by that time, anyway back to the point the 3 engines that participated in that test were the: Rocket, the san'spareil and the Novelty which 2 of them didn't make it becouse of mechanical failures and so the Rocket engine won the test and it became the first "Iron horse" in Englands rails.

    I said it before, but why not make the Shay your dedicated hump locomotive. It being so slow wont matter when its literally only moving cars that need put away. A good name for it would be 1-Hump-Chump, Snail, or King of CR&P Hill. The last is a nod to your poop stories, maybe have it pull a Waycar that can be the hump yard crew outhouse. Name the caboose CR&P House.

    A cool analogy could be when a pickup is hauling a full trailer vs without
    The truck without is lighter in the rear end so the wheels have less traction

    • @Game_Blox9999
      @Game_Blox9999 Год назад +1

      But a train is connected behind the drive wheels while a truck has the load directly on top of the drive wheels. It doesn't make much sense when you think about it. The weight in a truck trailer would normally sit directly on the 5th wheel, which is directly over the drive wheels. A train has the load behind the drive wheels, which would mean that the load wouldn't give you the traction you need. The weight actually comes from the boiler on the drive wheels. The boiler is full of water, which, depending on the load, is heavier. Some loads might give you a bit of traction, but it is pretty much negligible.

  • @hunterz9743
    @hunterz9743 Год назад

    kan the reason why more load makes the train slip less is because the point of attachment of the load is higher than the center of the wheels and so more force is send to the rear wheels and less on the front which creates more friction between the wheels and rails.

      @@ValentineC137 yeah I'm paper but in practice that's another thing in the game that locomotive has some serious glitches it runs out of sand way too fast and no geared locomotive would do a burnout like that if you went Full Throttle that's seriously the stumbling block for that locomotive in this game they need to remodel the climax or scrap that model entirely and make a 3 truck Climax and make it useful I just want the 2662 unitah railway articulated steam locomotive and that will be the greatest helper of them all is it the Tank Engine and it doesn't have any Tinder weight anyways peace out

    Have to admit Railroads Online is a very nice backdrop to kAN and Hyce talk about trains.

  • @JeffreyCasserly
    @JeffreyCasserly 9 месяцев назад

    The problem of tractive effort is the limits of adhesion of steel wheels on steel rails. Sanding helps, but the geared locos literally use all-wheel drive to increase tractive effort. However, they can only handle an 11% grade, which is the absolute limit of adhesion, while regular locos can only handle 6% when double-headed. The combo you have here will end up with the geared loco having to also provide some of the tractive effort for the non-geared loco, which has far less tractive capability. Obviously, the geared locos can in larger sizes to handle heavier loads.

    • @Sweetw4ter
      @Sweetw4ter 8 месяцев назад

      Hyce said in a vid that tractive effort has nothing to do with adhesion, that is represented with the factor of adhesion.

      Also, the materials available and the inability for precision manufacturing meant the engines were so inefficient that they would not be able to generate much effective work. It's not that manual labour was cheap. It was more effective.

  • @htomerif
    @htomerif Год назад +2

    From a purely static friction breaking sense, I don't think Hyce is correct about a heavier load giving you more traction. The only reason I can see why a heavier load would make you break static friction is if the engine is running at lower torque when its going slower. Or maybe there's some physical difference in how the engine is set up for loads, like less water or coal.

    • @Sweetw4ter
      @Sweetw4ter 8 месяцев назад

      It could be because the coupler is mounted at a higher point than the wheels touching the rails and thus creating additional force to press the wheels down, thus increasing friction.

    • @htomerif
      @htomerif 8 месяцев назад

      @@Sweetw4ter Yeah, but its not pulling down. Its pulling straight back. Any extra force on the rear wheels gets taken away from the front wheels.
      There might be some locomotives where this would matter, but (I think this was about the Climax) the Climax had equally powered front and rear trucks with differentials and a drive shaft, so you're not transferring force to wheels that are driven from wheels that aren't.
      Transferring weight from the front truck to the back truck would just make the front truck slip easier, and once it did, the rear truck taking up all of the torque, regardless of having a little more effective weight on it would slip much easier with a heavier load.
      That's assuming the weight was evenly balanced to start with, which it probably wasn't, so who knows. Also I don't know if it had a center differential. Probably not, but again, who knows.

    • @Sweetw4ter
      @Sweetw4ter 8 месяцев назад

      @@htomerif For climax i agree, for a more traditional loco with unpowered front bogey it might actually make a difference.

    • @htomerif
      @htomerif 8 месяцев назад

      @@Sweetw4ter It might even be true for the Climax. There's a version of the Climax hat has a tender and a third powered truck under the tender with a driveshaft extension. It depends almost entirely on how the weight distribution is set up.
      Looking at the most exhaustive list of locomotives I could find (a couple hundred) it seems like the most common configurations are 0-N-0 and 2-N-0 with a decent number of 0-N-2 and 2-N-2.
      The 0-N-0 ones wouldn't be affected by the weight of the train, 2-N-0 ones would probably be helped, but anything with trailing bogeys should lose traction.
      There doesn't seem to be any pattern of wheel configuration with respect whether the locomotive was a freight locomotive (usually slower and heaver loads) or a passenger one (faster and lighter loads). The only thing that stands out are shunting locomotives, which are almost always 0-4-0 or 0-6-0.
      I don't really even like trains that much and now I know way too much about them.
