Blackbeard is perhaps the only character to have SUCH a perfectly executed plan; he got ABSOLUTELY everything he sought, and he was willing and able to wait DECADES to get his fruit, warp his odds and circumstance, LITERALLY KILL HIS RIVAL AND TAKE HIS TERRITORY, and don't forget he freaking destroyed Marineford, and played everyone like a fiddle; name a faction he didn't outwit?
      [Okay, Big Mom he left alone. :/] {I count Shanks' heading off of Kaido/Big Mom to even be pretty clever, if you think about it; the only person to take Blackbeard seriously, is the only one who knew his nature, am I right? Luffy didn't. }

I literally just finished rewatching Alabasta, and it really reminded me how intelligent crocodile is as a villain. Later villains like Doflamingo, Big Mom, and Kaido cant hold a candle to Crocodile in this regard. They make up for it with numbers and brute force which I don't think are as effective at communicating threat. This is because Luffy's greatest strengths are also brute force and willpower. Crocodile's intelligence and diligent planning are much more terrifying to see Luffy go up against because those two areas are exactly where he is weakest. We all know as readers/viewers that Luffy will never truly lose a physical fight (sure he loses, but when we see a villain kick his ass we know he'll come back stronger and win), but we are aware as readers/viewers that Luffy will NEVER be smart enough to outwit the intricate plans of a mastermind like Crocodile.

I honestly prefer Kaidou to Doflamingo. His personality is just way more fun, to me personally, and it is expressed quite well through his actions. I also find it dumb when people keep going "man this character is great I wonder what his backstory is" as if a character needs a great backstory to validate him. While he had all the Charisma in the right place and a great backstory, he failed to actually deliver on being this Macchiavelian manipulator with a "Sun Tzu - Art of War"-like strategy and backup-plan. All I remember from Dressrosa was bird cage and his clone of strings, which both felt like brute-force attempts to recreate what Crocodile did. Crocodile also had an actual use for his subordinates that went beyond being mere fodder for the Strawhats (like compare how Mr. 2, Mr. 3 and Nico Robin changed the story vs. Diamante, Trebol and Pika). Also I will NEVER understand why Doflamingo gave the mera-mera no mi away in a stupid contest, instead of using it to his own benefit.

@Alex 45 No it’s the fact that Kaido “killed“ Kinemon but even he somehow survived so that took away from Kaido’s threat factor imo. Kaido was also built up as the biggest threat in the entire series so I think it would have been effective if he killed at least one of the scabbards, especially since Oda did end up killing two of them so it was clearly not a problem of him not wanting any of them to die.

And this is why I will still say to this day, even after hitting Wano, that Alabasta Arc is still my favorite arc. Crocodile being my Top 5 characters of One Piece. Arlong Park is alright but Alabasta is the make or break for both me personally & most folks. The first arc of One Piece that impacted me HEAVILY that actually kept me interested in watching One Piece. The first villian that had Luffy reflect and strategize in how to win. Punching Vivi to tell her she’s not alone, orchestrating the whole civil war and EXTENDED it by almost having Koza die in battle. His Devil Fruit power being the SOLE reason the arc started in the first place (absorbing both moisture & rain). Ace first appeared, even the first mention of one of the 3 most destructive weapons?! Don’t get me started on how I thought for a split second that Alabasta was where Luffy got his scar. And the tearful ending w/ Vivi being an OFFICIAL Straw Hat but still having duties to fulfill. Yeah unless the final arc can top Alabasta, then I have my winner.

Whereas with Crocodile even though Luffy starts out doing it as a favor for Vivi like you explained the focus quickly turned into Luffy vs Crocodile so their final showdown felt much more grand on a literary level. With Doflamingo it almost felt wrong that it was Luffy and not Law who was the one who dealt the winning blow.

The main thing holding Doffy back in comparison to crocodile is that Doffy wasn’t allowed to truly be the big bad. Crocodile was THE guy in alabasta, everything the strawhats did was to stop him, but Doffy was on some level just used to hype Kaido. Law wanted to beat Doffy but luffy was only even in dressrosa to antagonize some other big bad and only stuck around because Doffy was being an asshole. Crocodile was the hardest boss Luffy ever had to defeat imo. Unlike Doffy Moriah or Lucci he couldn't just pull a new form or improve on what he already had he still had no power ups at that time, add to that the fact he was facing a very experienced logia user who had turf advantage it seemed pretty difficult for Luffy to win. And it was, in fact the only reason he won is because he had to think outside the box and figure out his opponents weakness through pain. He also had no help at all and had to fight him 3 times, the only who proved to be this much of a challenge is Kaido but even then Luffy had outside help at multiple points throughout their fight. Really it could've gone either way in the end as they proved to be equally powerful. That's why I still think Crocodile was Luffy's hardest villain to beat.

I think that this "someone" Caribou was referring to, was actually Crocodile as the latter wanted to get his hands on Pluton. So, instead of doing the job himself, he could have hired Caribou to spy on the SH and Robin in order to get the infos he needed about Pluton.
I think he should get some flashbacks' time (like Doflamingo) even though he is a well fleshed-out character. Ivankov knows about some of his secrets for instance and having a perspective into his past could reveal even more about his personality and motivations.

@@rickyailion9751 And even still, with No backstory whatsoever, Crocodile is a million times more interesting and superbly written than Kaido.

Having been rewatching the alabasta saga, Crocodile is leaps and bounds better than a lot of the villains in One Piece, especially Kaido. Crocodile still being a major player in the New World works perfectly.

Aside from Zoro and Vegeta Crocodile is my favorite anime character in general. I just wish we get to see him. More in the future. This man drip is something else.

I think all the stuff you mentioned at the beginning about why Crocodile is the best villain also apply to Doffy pretty well. Doffy is my favorite villain. He was menacing, powerful, competent, and a fallen world noble out for revenge. His backstory is also more fleshed out than most other villains.
Anyone that says Crocodile is the greatest villain won't gear any complaints from me however.

I'm happy that u share my opinion about him beeing the most competent. Actually for a long time now i had the theorie that he used to work with the revolutionaries hence his abilitie to controll a country from the shadows, his past with ivankov and his hatred for the world government.

I'm just gonna say this: Sir Crocodile will ALWAYS be my favorite One Piece villain, if not my favorite villain of all time. He, along with Professor Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, are the reason why the villain from my profile picture existed. I admit, my villain from my profile picture is a fanfiction villain, but, Sir Crocodile and Moriarty are my influences for this villain due to how they had pretty much orchestrated the entire story events, had their plans and backup plans executed to near-perfection, and just how much trouble and challenges they give to the protagonists.

I'm 100% sure luffy beat crocodile with plot armor back in arabasta. It's impossible for pre time skip pre gears luffy to beat someone with a bounty in the billions. It was nessesary for the story but croc obviously got a big nerf back then/buff now. I'm happy about it but its the biggest flaw in powerscaling on the entire series in my opinion.

It's also due to Luffys quick recovery between the fights that has now been explained gave him the winning edge.

Crocodile didn't have a bounty in the billions until now. Makes no sense to try and apply a new bounty to back then. He didn't have a need back then , realistically he got a huge buff to keep up with the power we have now but ultimately thats fine. Especially since its similar to Moriah who was implied in the first place to be stronger when he had ambition which Crocodile lost from his own failures and regained it seemingly after his defeat and in impel down

@@latima123ify He had his bounty frozen because he was a Shichibukai so we really don't know how much he would have, I think future fights are going to show how much strenght oda was not using for plot purposes. (Crocodile is already a grown man, and you don't see him training for 2 years straight like luffy, he even spent time in iddle in jail, so its fair to say he shoudn't be much stronger now than back then, so he should have a bounty in the billions back then) Even before this new bounty I thought pre-timeskip luffy shouldn't had beat crocodille.

So glad the OG is back in the game. Whether he's your fav villian or least, Croc is the most effective villain OP has had so far, and this is coming from someone who's favorite antagonists are Lucci and Katakuri, even I gotta acknowledge that.
