He is one of my favorite photographers and its a complete mystery to me why he isn't as famous as he should be
I don't know if he recently got on instagram or what but i've watched the man's ig account grow exponentially over the past few months. people are finally catching on after he started going higher volume with the ig uploads. so glad he is getting the shine he so deservedly deserves.
Totally agree, it’s not often a photographer has a beautiful body of work that has historical importance as well. Mind blowing working that should be held in the same esteem as some of the contemporary masters.
i can imagine there are several amazing photographers that fall by the wayside meanwhile mediocer photographers rise to historic levels because they have the right connections or know how to work social media to get on top.
I agree
Yes. Great eye. The photo of the ship too close to shore, the car and the pick up too close to the water... Garry Winogrand would've killed for that image. In 1988 I went looking for the Kowloon Walled City with bad directions, never found it. And fame? museum shows? Who knows?
Started my career in the early 80’s working in the Philippines, Greg was the premier transparency slide photographer, his work has always been masterful, viewers must understand the technical difficulties working in such an exacting media. With barely 1/2 stop of exposure latitude and the multitude of lighting temperatures that would affect the tonality of your chromes. Greg Girard is surely a Master of the craft.
He mastered the cyberpunk look before cyberpunk was a thing.
I came across his work of the Kowloon Walled City during my recent visit to Hong Kong. So dope you got to interview him
Been in love with his work for so long. He responded to DM’s years ago too. Such a humble guy. Thanks for doing this interview Willem.
I love this! I’ve been following Greg’s work for a long time on instagram, and it’s cool to actually put a face to the photography and hear him speak on it. Thx for posting this!
This is my first time seeing Greg Girard’s work (how is that possible!), and it is exceptional. Thank you so much for the introduction and wonderful interview Willem. Now to check out his books 😂.
for someone grow up in hong kong like me to see the kowloon city wall photos is vey touching obviously i didnt live that life nor i have the fortune to see it. it is really iconic. and listening to someone to share their photographic journey is very impactful and enjoyable.
This guy is so humble and interesting to listen to. Really well done interview and amazing pictures.
I had the pleasure to meet and chat with him in Tokyo before. He's such a nice guy and I really enjoyed this video. Thanks!
Seems I am not alone in seeing Greg's work for the first time. He has a beautiful and thoughtful approach to his work. Thank you for this video.
This is a great insight, thank you so much Willem and Greg for making this. I remember Phantom Shanghai coming out when I was first starting out as a bookseller, it was one of the first photobooks I remember really paying attention to and helped inspire me in travels and photography as well as to spend more time with photobooks. I haven't kept track of Greg's work since then, so this video is a great prompt to catch up! Thanks again.
He’s one of the great photographers of our time. Thanks for interviewing him and sharing the output with us all!
Finally again a very interesting photographer and contemporary with such wonderful atmospheric photo works. And very important for me are his thoughts on his work. I could listen to him very well. Very big class for me. Thanks
This is one of your best video till date dare I say, thanks for the incredible interview, Will.
Not only is his body of work phenomenal, but it also seems endless. I don't think I've ever seen him repeat a photo within an Insta set, not even once
What an amazing photographer, it's kinda funny that I've seen their photos before and it inspired me to get my look and style to my photos, this interview makes me even more inspired to take more elaborate shots!
Seeing his 80's HK pics hit some 90's HK nostalgia for me. It's a very different vibe there now.
I've lived in Vancouver my whole life and also grown up photographing the city, but it is insanely different than what it was in the 70s. Greg really makes me wish I could time travel to photograph Vancouver in the 70s.
Wow Greg!!! My favorite photographer. I'm enchanted by all of his work.
An absolutely legend of a photographer! One of my favorite ones. So glad he is active in both publishing his early works and creating new ones. Great thanks for doing an interview with him!
Thank you for featuring him. He is probably my favorite photographer because his photos are the pretty much the look i try to go for. I've seen lots of his work but never knew what he looked like or sounded like.
Stunning!
Been following Greg for years, hes something special
I didn’t know I needed this! Thanks Willem. I’ve been really enamored with Greg’s work recently and found this very inspiring.

Willem, this is epic! Please find more guys to document. Made my Friday for sure. Chapeau!
He has been my GOAT since I discovered him a few years back. Every time he puts an image online I lose it
Greg is my favorite photographer. Really beautiful work. Thank you for this interview!
I've been such a fan of Greg and the fact that you cover him is so immensely cool Willem! Love it!
incredible how he manages the colour. This is being a master. I observed how much intensity there was in the slides and how less there is in the pictures of the latest works that seem to be digital (?)
Wow! Amazing work and great dialogue of his work. this is my first time hearing of him. I am both inspired and in aw of the images he captured!
I loved and admired his and your photography for so long, so cool to see two of my idols working together on a video!
Thanks Willem for presenting this video , always been a fan of Greg Girard's awesome work
Really nice and inspiring video, thanks for all the effort and sharing his work!

Big fan of Greg's work. Thanks for making this interview happen!
Greg Girard is an Icon and pioneer of documentary street photography. Thx.
Definitely one of my favourite photographers. So cool you got to interview him!!!
Greg Girard is awseome. Some of his Vancouver shots are my favourites of all time.
He kept coming up on my Instagram feed so I just followed him a few weeks ago. Really enjoy his style. Did not know this was the same person!

Wow, great photos by a great photographer. Thanks for sharing this with us.
my favorite photographer. Very kind and gifted
Great video and interview. He's very overlooked imo, love his daily posts from his archive on ig.
Thank you for this fascinating interview with one of my favorite photographers.
Amazing interview! i know the title was designed to be catchy, but I love so much the fact that this interview focused more on the why he made the photos, instead of how he made them. Really good, and I hope you make more of these!!
Total discovery for me, thank you so much. Incredible work. I'm gonna get some books 😄
Brilliant photography and very interesting guy! Thanks for sharing 🙌🏻
Excellent! Thank you for posting this!
Thank you for this interview!
bought 2 of his books back in 2020 or 21 ! Amazing work !
Such wisdom and grace. Inspiring.
Hadn't come across him before but such beautiful shots. Can see the influence of other photographers taking similar shots in America
Favorite photographer of all time. By far.
it's crazy how many of his photos i recognized, but until now i had no clue who's the author. incredible photos
He's one of my greatest inspirations! I got two amazing books of his
Internet needed to know more about him! Thank You,
Willem!
I came across Phantom Sanghai when I was at Photography School, and the blues and oranges of his interiors and electric lights fascinated me. My style as a photographer is very different, but I have a fascination for some of the same subjects -essentially, those living in the first world, but on its fringes, voluntarily or by force-, and my books have been about that. He also has a statement in a David Campany interview in Vancouver's prologue about "anti-documentarism (...) a very subjective, highly stylised, almost novelistic way of making photographs"... not the exact quote, something very similar... which I very much adscribe to.
Incredible spotlight on GG. Easily top 3 photographer for me, and this was very interesting and illuminating to watch
I met him in nov at parisphoto and didnt know him. A really kind and sharing guy
What a talent. I’ve seen some of his works before but never knew his name. Definitely need to pick up City of Darkness and JAL 76 - 88
Always incredible Willem and Greg is such an incredibly talented photographer and down to earth and humble as a person. Inspiring.
And at The Untitled Love bookshop 🙏🏿 📚 🤍
Thanks again for all your help!
thanks for this interview!
I love how he doesn't talk about camera gear, the most important thing is the creative process!
How on earth did he take some of those quick shots at night on slide film? Insane.
living in Vancouver many of his Vancouver images are well know ( and sadly gone) places but he sees them in unique ways.
loved this so much
One of my fav photographers of all time.
Love this series you’re building!! ❤
This is GOLD content. ❤❤
Great video! Thanks for making it!
one o my all time favorite photographers
Love the old gas price sign showing the price back then.
Beautiful work.
Big fan of him, have three books and really love his aesthetic!!
bellissime foto, ricche di particolari, colori, sensazioni, pesaggi, vita vissuta che fanno rivivere quel tempo!! Grande fotografo!
Incredible ❤
I’ve been following Greg for many years. Happy you’ve interviewed him, more people should know about his work.
Merci Willem. Belle découverte
amazing ! what an inspiration
Great interview
He discussed the appeal of Eggleston's work.
As a collective, you look at matters of class, different eras, geographic factors, that all affect design elements that are a part of people's daily lives. And also you think about how people lived at the moment the photographs were taken.
But on an individual level, the photos mostly don't go beyond snap shots. And many individually don't reach a level of snap shot.
amazing work
10:35 poor guy wants to visit 💀😂
I noticed that too! 😀
Greg is one of my favorites, nice video dude 🤝
Thanks Nat!!
Canadian icon. Thanks for the work.
One of the best ❤
Greg's JAL76-88 and City of Darkness Revisited are incredible photo books, and I would encourage all of you to go to his website and order copies. His Hong Kong Night Life book is also available for pre-order, releasing in April.
