I agree with you 100% but I am tired of thinking about it. Here's why...I am a professional photographer and I am constantly thinking about what my voice is. What am I trying to say? Am I unique enough? Am I a fraud? Am I technical enough or creative enough? It never ends in my mind. It's so stressful sometimes that I feel like giving up although I know I won't. I worry about these things because I don't get hired as much as I would like and that leaves me wondering why. While I do earn a living as a portrait photographer, I feel I should be much further along in my career which makes me think "is it my work?". I know it's important to reevaluate what you're creating but it's not helpful to stress over it which is something I do. I always wonder if I don't have a distinctive style or if I'm unique enough...I really don't know. But what I do know is that I can take a photo that I enjoy looking at and am proud of. I also know that I am dependable, hard working and easy to get along with. All those things matter just as much as your photographic style. With social media it's very easy to compare yourself with others which is a disaster. So when I start worrying I try to focus on my achievements, being patient and knowing there's a place for me and what I do. More than anything, I've started trusting my intuition when taking photos, and to make the photos that I want to look at.

Don't be too hard on yourself - a lesson I learnt.
Most of my most loved clicks ( in my family and friends circle and not in Instagram! ) are clicks which I found many imperfections. They saw only the moment and what's in it than the slight blur or noise .. ❤❤

This is excellent. It reminds me of movie/tv/theater directors who care more about having an honest conversation with the person who they might be working with and getting to know an actor and not if they can "play this character". By getting to know who they are, the answer is readily apparent.

This video was recommended at a great point on my photography path as I dare venture forth professionally for the first time. (The algorithm knows all.)
You unlocked something in my mind that made me breathe easier! Then the very next hurdle I found as I explored what I want to do is that I do not think it fits the market. How do you go about marrying what the market bears with your vision?
I love classical portraiture. When I think of the old masters, Roman and Greek statues, classical paintings, crisp lines and stoic comfort, I feel at home. Trouble is, I'm so early in my development that I don't think the clientele for that style would give me the time of day, let alone payment. Is that an illusion, first of all? Does that market exist at all, outside of politicians and C-suites?
Do I ask friends and family to stand for me until I get good enough? I don't think there are enough friends (and time from each) to get me close.
Thank you so much for the nudge. Now I can finally be on my way to figure out the above - or perhaps how flexible my voice is.

I would turn around and take a pic of all of the photographers taking a pic of the Eiffel Tower and not show the tower in my shot. There's my voice. Similar incident one time in the US at the Grand Canyon. This bus of Japanese tourists showed up and unloaded, along with all the other tourists were at this one beautiful scenic overlook to capture the sunset. Well, I was there but for a completely different reason. Just as the sun hit the horizon I turned the opposite way and photographed the chasms of stunning color layers of the sedimentary rock that the sun rays are illuminating. Everyone else was photographing the the sun most likely getting a pic of an over exposed bright spot of light with everything else dark. As soon as the sun disappeared everyone, except me, left. I stayed and got some great afterglows and 30 minutes later enjoyed a gorgeous star-filled night sky. Being the oddball photographer is my voice. :)

This might be one of the most invaluable pieces of advice you've ever put in a video. I agree with this so much I want to find a way to describe how much more I agree with it than anything else you've ever said (which I usually love and agree with anyway). I've always felt this way about photography overall, but never filled in that missing piece of how your voice can be used like this. This explains why I shoot the way I do. I'm gonna ponder this and start exploring. Thank you so so much as always, Scott.

Great vid and so true! You need to find that inner style. I'm lucky that mine came out while I was in high school studying art in the 80's. Your inner visual style comes through no matter the medium you choose. If I paint, draw, photograph or film, it's there. It's strong, it's bold, it's enticing.

I agree with your style development method, but clients want what they want and creating your own style/niche will set you apart from everyone else with regards to your personal gallery and portfolio. What I’ve found is clients want current content relevant to their product or goal, style sometimes is not at the top of the priority list and there’s cost too. Beautiful work!

Precious advise and is coming from the heart, is coming exactly from the place where inspiration, hard work and love are born... Ten years... Ten years of inconformity until find the photographer sleeping inside. For some people will look like a lot of time, but when you know that something is missing and you really want to find it, in that EUREKA!!! moment when you breath deep and say "Wow, that's me" the ten years of searching, disappointments, and little victories are the best ten years of of our lives... Blessings and thank you.

Good advice. I read once that after the age of about 8 years or maybe 12 years, our brains start the process of forgetting - that is the neural pathways that are regularly used are preserved, others that are not used are dropped or fade out. Think of pathways through a forest that fall into disuse while others become roads. Anyway, that's what I was thinking when you explained how it took ten years to discover your own voice. It's almost like we have to unlearn and get back to those childhood things. I'm sure Picasso said something similar. 👍

Really appreciated your your presentaion. I am a graphic designer that has been adding photography to my skill set. Been taking classes and it's been awesome. Developing your own style often grows out of copying others at first. Steve Jobs: “We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas... good artist copy, great artists steal.” I say, "give glory to God".
I commented to a musician a few days ago saying, "loved you keyboard playing. Your singing is also good though if love to hear you sing with more authority." She said she's a keyboard player. I said, "you have a beautiful voice". I had just meant that I didn't believe what she was singing. Conviction is also another good word too.
But your drawing forth your journey into your work is very well said.

Watching others efforts to get success as a photographer - I see two different contradictory forces acting on shooters - There is a level of photography when you decide to go "Pro" that being quirky, interesting and unique isn't wanted by most of the clientele - weddings, headshots , corporate work etc will offer lots of money but they actively discourage innovation and art in their requirements. Eventually, when your photography business is very lucrative you can reach "escape velocity" and go do your own thing while still keeping the bills paid ... but that takes a lot of retail shooting usually first - the challenge I see is hanging on to your voice/style through this period
    Great video ! Have subscribed

In my early years of being addicted to posting my images to Instagram in Alberta I had to ask my self something "AM I TAKING THESE PHOTOS FOR INSTAGRAM?" and if I said yes to myself, I either didn't bother or I canceled my drive. I've been a shooter of photography since 1999 and in 2013 I became a shooter for Instagram but in 2015 I realized, no. I am a shooter for myself. So I don't take photos of anything unless I feel like it or the lighting is so amazing I can not resist.

Awesome advice. I think I was missing that advice. I've gone to my About page, wiped it all out, and started again with a more frank and honest descriptor! Speaking of Jam...I estimate I have 10 years on you in terms of era so Jam and Rice Pudding was a common pudding for me in the 80s and early 90s before affordable ready made trifle, ready made chocolate cake, and ready made everything else was a thing! When I see Jam, that is what I think of - Jam and Rice Pudding.

I am not trying to be a professional photographer, but I do entirely agree with what you are saying here. It's all about telling a story. I really sum it up as two things... 1. What is this image about (what are the characters and how do they relate). 2. What am I trying to say as the photographer capturing the photo (because it is my choices that impact how the story is told). Niches are key because as you focus, and limit yourself - you can really tune into characters you are interested in and what you want to say.

I have images that I just took as an experiment and had planned to delete except they turned out better than I expected. Some I have entered into competitions. Bravo Scott! What frustrates me is the copy machine approach a lot of photographers. Boom here's a snapshot. Unfortunately clients except it. In what I do if you ask someone about their style and voice you will get a blank stare back! I thought I was the only crazy person. I know so many photographers that machine gun and call it a day. They don't understand their style and do not work at their craft.

Thanks for the words of advice Scott. I'm guilty myself of going for the dopamine hit so it's good to get a dose of common sense

So so true. I never shoot what I see others shoot anymore. I get no satisfaction from shooting what others shoot every day. I often shoot something that I like so much like a particular type of abstract I say that’s the niche I want to follow but then I feel limited and go back to shooting everything.

ive just learned from everyone on HOW TO USE MY GEAR, some techniques, lighting, etc... just to find out that my style is close to simple and plain and i dont need all that extra stuff. The vision is already in me! i just needed the vehicle to get it out.
