    Perfectly stated. Hard to believe I'm 50+ yrs old now but would have been in the middle of the pit back then. My 18yr old daughter raided the back of my closet and now, in ironic hipster fashion, wears my old concert tees--Ramones, Husker Du, Minutemen, Dead (both Kennedys AND Milkmen), etc...She has eyes on my LP's but I'll have to die first!!!

      Not enough to take a fantastic Byrds song (a huge influence) and make it one of the best covers ever, the live version here is unreal..each verse more intense...the third is explosive. Norton is out of his mind and not missing a note. Very rare for a small band to get this quality in 1983. I know they kept putting out great albums, but I cant see them getting better than they were here

      as good as the single version is, one of their gretest moments only left off zen arcade because it didnt fit the "concept"...nothing tops this, ive watched every live version, heard every bootleg version....they never did it better and they know it. every member is on fire, at 3:00 Mould punches the chord. when i first saw this, figured it was the finale of a great show...but its early on!

    • @DaveAnchovies
      @DaveAnchovies 2 года назад +3

      and theyre turning a corner here...still a raging punk band but to think this didnt make the cut for zen arcade...where the hooks were creeping in...this is actually the most intense version. at first i was sure this was the end of the set...norton is completely the overlooked killer bassist always keeping it together, the entire band is just perfect here. like i said before, they didnt get worse by any means, but they couldnt possibly improve on this set, either. thank you for sharing and the quality is right on if you wanna feel what a show like this was like to wander into.

    Wow - what a show. Amazing number of bodies in the air at the end of it. Cool to see so that so many others hold this version of the song in the same high regard. It's a monster of a single, one of my favorite covers ever. The made it their own. Looks like this performance was only a couple months after the single was recorded in October '83, and a few months before it was actually released.

      Husker was known for playing the new yet to be released album and mixing in a few oldies. Probably a good chance this or the 2xlp hadn't been released or was before the crowd knew the songs.

    RIP Grant Hart

  • @DaveAnchovies
    @DaveAnchovies 3 года назад +2

    the final verse was always super explosive--building, each one more intense, but i notice something new in it. moulds gestures, those awesome shirts, hart was a pretty damn good drummer, not a maniac, but his sound is how moulds incredible guitar rig was unmitakably Huskers. Norton probably the most "musician"something every day. i can barely listen to the single version, which is one of my favorite Du moments, even though its a cover, and i love the Byrds version...this is a band evolving, so its still catchy, but maniacally. i would have sworn this was the last song of the set, thats a pleased pit...its pretty much the the best Husker stuff ive seen, and i watch a lot. the guitar punch at 3:05 is great, norton is a killer bassist who takes a back seat to the mould vs. hart storyline. grant is bobs equal, to me. his songs are just as essential, he did an acoustic bus tour and did an in store at my old shop. got there 2 hours early (he had nowhere else to go) and did all his husker songs, 2541/Intolerance and a few Nova Mob songs. imagine an acoustic version of Data Control, and it totally worked. That fella cold talk and talk and you knew he was fucking with you half the time...but its Grant Hart and hes playing records and talking my ear off. good guy, very friendly and approachable, but he could tell stories. good hearted and funny. r.i.p.

      The major issue is that I have an eidetic auditory musical memory and can play music in my head as though from a tape playback. At will.
      So I can remember what all analogue shows, clubs, and records sounded like.
      I cannot listen to any streaming tunes. Sounds terrible.
      I can hear the harmonic stripping, the compression, the algos, all that is lost when compared even to CDs but most especially to any all analogue vinyl lp.
      I have tried. 30 seconds is all I can tolerate. Must be on AAA vinyl.
      Thus all new music sounds horrible.
      I can tell when an lp was cut fron a PCM digital source.
