    This run was performed using the Rare Replay port as opposed to the original ZX Spectrum version. As far as I can tell from footage of the original, it looks accurate. I initially thought the immense lag was a porting problem, but it runs that way on ZX Spectrum as well. I cannot personally speak to the accuracy though because I've never played the original.
    Knightlore is a really interesting game. It is one of the earliest isometric platformers out there (might actually be the first, not sure), so it introduced some concepts that would later be used in classics like Solstice. It does have quite a few limitations, though. This was a really fun project to work on, but I have no interest in improving this run. I'll be the first to say that this run CAN be improved, but the execution is not nearly as interesting to me as the routing was.
    I wrote an enormous amount about the game mechanics, RNG seeding, etc, for an SDA submission. If you are interested in reading about it, you can check the pastebin below:

    Just lol at this game. It's so bad hahaha. All these Spectrum games were just thrown in as a novelty. For real though I'm glad they got this junk outta the way so hopefully the next collection they can give some of the 16 bit ports of their flagship titles. Battlemaniacs would have been a better choice than this.

    I have all the items, the way u put the items in the pot in ur order, it doesn’t do the flashing light show for me, WHY?

    • @TheSuperSNES
      @TheSuperSNES  3 года назад

      The cauldron will tell you what items you need to put into it. The sequence is always the same, but the starting point in the sequence is random. There are 8 different possibilities for starting point and item distribution on the map, so it is pretty unlikely that using my run as a guide will be successful.

      @@TheSuperSNES ok, how long does it go, on my first play through, I put in everything that the cauldron asked, it felt like I was running out of items? There was no end to it

    • @TheSuperSNES
      @TheSuperSNES  3 года назад

      @@stash8293 There are 7 different items, and you need to put two of each into the cauldron. They each only appear 4 times in the world, so you'll be using up half of the items. It definitely feels like a lot!

    I think the first isometric game for ZX was Ant Attack, but Knight Lore was (at least for me) the first of the most incredible game made with 48 Kb. The Stamper brothers will be allways in the book of videogames history.

    Ultimate stood out among other software houses during the early Spectrum years because they were producing fast-paced games with nice and colorful graphics which most of the competition didn't think was possible in such a primitive machine that was not designed for gaming. Then came Knight Lore and pushed the limits of the machine even further.
    My opinion is however that it didn't take too long for the others to catch up and soon many others were producing better games. But they were among the first to do things professionally and many of their games are classics (although not all of them aged well).
    While I always liked Knight Lore (and I still do) I think it had several flaws: the lag, the poor design of some rooms, few actual puzzles, the movement of some enemies was too random, etc.
    Of all clones, Head Over Heels (1987) was the best (on the Spectrum at least). It was like Knight Lore but with all flaws corrected: better level design, more balanced difficulty level, better graphics, better sound, lots of puzzles, ...

    I played Knight Lore and other Ultimate games countless times on my Spectrum, and after watching these videos (I don't have Rare Replay myself) I wouldn't be able to distinguish between both versions.
    There are tons of good Spectrum emulators for just about every platform, so I'm pretty sure that Rare Replay simply runs the original games using an emulator. They updated the copyright message, replaced the "Select keyboard / joystick" menu with "Press A to start" and may have made other minor tweaks, but for all purposes I think you were playing the original Knight Lore in all its glory.
    Despite having grown up with these games I realize that they are not necessarily the easiest to approach for an audience that never knew this computer, that's why I'm impressed to see reviews and walkthroughs like yours!

    Nice to see a run for this game! I have the original ZX spectrum version in the box (along with Nightshade, another Rare/Ultimate game in the same vein), and this port is pretty much identical. The lag was always an issue in busy rooms.
    The Spectrum did have a number of isometric platformers. A good one that comes to mind is Sweevo's World/Whirled. You should seek it out if you can.

      Thank you for the info! I have never played any ZX Spectrum game, so I had no idea how this *actually* compared. It looked close, but it's hard to say for sure. Good to know it is an accurate port. :D
      I'll see if I can find a good way to play Sweevo's World. Thanks for the recommendation!

    wow with the lag it seems like this would be a game with the possibility of a 'perfect run'

    • @TheSuperSNES
      @TheSuperSNES  8 лет назад +1

      It would actually be REALLY hard to get a perfect run in this. You would need perfect luck from every room with falling spikes, and perfect luck on all the gates in every laggy room. Spending even a minor amount of extra time in a laggy room can add ~5-10 seconds to the run because of the day/night cycle. A perfect run would also require getting ideal luck on the "Mr. Ghost's Wild Ride" roomt 11:20 (which has never happened before).
      This run can absolutely be improved, and by probably 45-60 seconds, but I don't think a perfect run is feasible. :/

      Yeah sorry my comment was made from a place of ignorance, I didn't think this game was a random game, I thought it was a rotation based game.
