Great video Jack! Love your content! I'm a pour over fanboy, but don't mind the occasional americanos in cafes.
Random question - do you think the wdt pre pour over does anything? Wondering if i should invest in one, since i dont do espressos at home.

Thx for watching. Good question. It was the first time I ever tried it. I don’t think it is necessary. When you grind for pour over you don’t expect any clumps anyway. Some do wet WDT which makes more sense.
Then again, if coffee champions are doing it, you can try as well. Especially when it is relatively cheap.

I have the same bag of coffee as you. I use Option-O P100 HU with Decent and WAFO spirit basket. With this set up there is no issue extracting lightly roasted beans for espresso. I believe with your set up you should get higher EY from espresso than pour over.
I have done similar experiments with other beans and it is always pour over (I use V60) being more crispy and more layers, where as Americano is sweeter but flat. For a flat bed pour over I think it will be in between. I guess apart from pressure, the other difference is the shape of brewer / espresso basket. V60 is designed not to be perfectly even extraction which brings the layers. On the other side espresso probably extracted much more evenly.

Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. I had to grind almost at the touch point to get something out of this coffee. Maybe it wasn’t the freshest.

    interesting.
I personally like pour over with medium to medium-dark roasted coffee.
maybe grew up drinking dark roasted coffee makes me like dark chocolate, nutty, a bit smoky and brown sugar flavour notes on my cup.

Thx for watching. I don’t know, but it has to be light roast coffee for my pour overs. I can have darker roasts for cold brew though.

Very interesting video Jack. I enjoy espresso & latte, but if its going to be coffee with hot water then I prefer pour-over over americano always. With hot water pour-overs brings out the aroma of the beans in a light & flavorful way. Other than the beans, the filter makes a big difference too. But with americano it just feels like diluted espresso, which is what it is. Its a neither here nor there kind a feeling. Sometimes I get annoyed when the barista at the counter says something like - sorry we are out of pour-overs, how about americano instead? Sorry maybe its just me.

@@mycoffeeshow111 The extraction turnaround is much shorter for americano than pour-over - considering so many customers are waiting in line 🙂

Interesting, I don't drink pure espresso but I do prefer long black with 50 grams to americano. I drink espresso based drinks in the morning and around noon. Refreshing pourover works for me in afternoon or around 4 pm.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. Why you don’t like straight espresso? I always start my day with one. Later, depending on how much time I have I either go for another one (or 2 or 3 😛) or pour over. This recipe btw is very nice.

    • @Val_Smith

I never liked the overwhelming taste and too much of an aftertaste of it I guess.
I can drink a 45-50g turbo but prefer a more diluted drink. Also I am more of a sipper. If I start my day with coffee it’s a milk drink if I have breakfast its black. Too much coffee can make me anxious so I try to stick to 3-4 max a day.
