Rust is not the only reason to lubricate an o-ring chain. You also need to lubricate it to keep the o-rings from drying out and disintegrating and keep them soft a pliable. Otherwise...great info.
The greasing of the chain is not only done so that the chain does not rust, but it is greased mainly to prevent the drying of the O-rings or X-rings, thus prolonging the life of the chain and the quality of the rides. O-rings equal more friction ..... X-rings equal less friction ......
Here in Argentina o rings chain japan made costs the double as standard chain. And do not lasts double of time well maintained. Good video and thanks for the upload!
I run x ring on my road bikes. Non o ring on dirt. I don’t race dirt bikes anymore but the once a year Enduro. I have multiple chains for different sprocket combos. Non o ring dirt chains are cleaned and oiled before the race with silkolene standard chain lube. Never broke a chain even on long hard enduros. When I raced road bikes (tz250) I didn’t run o ring chains then either, but those chains were cleaned and lubed totally before each race.
We f you make final drive ratio changes often and swap chains to do so, then non o ring chain is a lot easier to remove. Just unclip it, o ring chains need to be pressed off and pressed on
O rings chain last longer so is better for a trail bike or something you use for off road if you are racing and you want to make as much power as possible the non o-ring chain might be a better choice because there is less friction however dirt can get in the joints and wear it out quicker.
Right on man you are 100 percent correct in that o rings are better, I would add that oiling them Will extend there life and help keep the o rings from drying out and cracking and lube the outer roles for longer life. As to robbing power, after they are warmed up and properly lubed they spin pretty free
I just came across your channel and I am glad I did! You give such useful information and advice! Greetings from Mexico and keep up the good work 👍🏽👍🏽!
Haha i have it for o'ring chain stiff and rusty. I use on my africa twin 1100 l non oring chain but first think do it before installation.... Make hot bath this chail with wax and graphite mixture to make lubricated and protect chain. At the moment I have 5000 miles for non o'ring chain and still good condition graphite do all lubrication it is old school.
Anyway 530 non o'ring chain is the same wide like 525 o'ring if u use 525 non o'ring chain is les weight. With a chain without o-rings there is less resistance which goes hand in hand with less fuel consumption and in racing better laptime. That's why chains without o-rings and aluminum sprockets are used on GPs
Hi, What you show there as non o-ring chain looks like grandpa's chain from his Mobra. There are high quality non-oring MX chains made of speacial alloys that can last as long as any o-ring chain. I use CZ MX Gold and in almost 2 seasons of mud and harsh conditions it still doesn't look like yours, actually it is nice and shiny. In these 2 seasons I adjusted it 2-3 times and it's not locked or anything. Yamaha WR400. Remember CZ MX Gold. Made in Czech Republic. A 520 chain is around €50, great price for the value.
Well.. I bought a good quality none oring one for my bike for half a price than the oring one... I clean and lube every two weeks spend only 15 Minutes.... Plus I can feel the difference between the one with oring and the none on ring... It's more quicker... But it's my experience...
Nice explanation. so everybody decide for their needs. If you are on dirt bike and have time to clean and oil the chain after every trail, so go for non o-ring chain.
Theoretically it doesn't matter at all because by the time you wear out the rollers your chain will have stretched anyway. I remember the old chains in which the plates were in the shape of zero today are in the shape of eight because it is supposed to stretch you would change it Today's crappy car production.... You should buy AND not ask the question
The reason you lube an O-ring chain is is because the rollers and sprocket cogs are metal to metal contact and need lube or you will wear the cogs. An O-ring chain only needs a little lube on the rollers on the side that mates with the sprockets. Non-Oring chains need to be lubed on the rollers AND between the plates. That is a much bigger mess. Lubing an oring chain to prevent rust is not "only to prevent rust".
You dont see alot of videos about this stuff man thanks for posting! Im in need soon for a new chain and sprocket kit. Ill stick to the o ring chain im used to using. Awesome videos man!

O-ring chains are better for off road/enduro riding and non o-ring is better for Mx/track riding. O-ring chains rob a little HP which most Mx racers don’t want
I use a XW ring. It has less rolling resistance than a plain O ring chain. Oh and like I said in a previous comment, I never lube my chain on a dirt bike. Just run him dry. I get a better life out of it. But on my road bike I always lube, but this is a different application.
RoManiac yeah I’m hearing ya, but I’m not concerned with the horsepower deficit, we have to remember that friction is the enemy of all machines. Having said that, I use a $200 chain, run it dry and get 70+ hours out of it and the rear sprocket. It comes down to what a person feels comfortable doing. All is good.
