- Old towns in Turkey fascinate me. And when somebody told me to go and see old Town Kula I had no high expectations. But what I found totally blew me away. Sadly it needs restoration soon or it will be all lost. Come and explore one of the most original old towns in Turkey.
After standing the test of time for centuries, Ottoman and Greek houses in the town of Kula in western Turkey's Manisa Province now face the danger of collapse. They are in need of help from the authorities.
Kula was among the few historic settlements that were spared from the massive destruction caused by the Greek invasion of Anatolia in the aftermath of World War I. The historic core of the town was unscathed and mainly preserved its original structure.

Hey Ellis, I am a 58-year-old Turk, born in Göstepe, on the Asian side of Istanbul.
Actually, what I wanted to tell you was that in my childhood, the Göztepe district was full of only Ottoman Turkish houses. These wooden mansions were so beautiful, they were as elegant as a bird.Of course, not only Göztepe district, but also Bostanci, Suadiye, Erenköy, Kiziltoprak and many other districts were full of such wonderful mansions.Unfortunately, only a very small number of protected houses remain today.Unfortunately, selfish thieves who think about their own interests and have no respect for history, and state members with the same education who approved them, gave approval for the demolition of all of them over time.
Sadly that's how it goes. Greed rules, not just in Turkey. But thinking of how beautiful those places must have been in their full glory. Amazing!
I hear Eurasian collared doves cooing in your video. They are quite new here in the remote Sunshine Coast, Canada. What a beautiful video. The algorithm led me to you, that's incredible!
Thank you so much and welcome!
Wow!... As a Old Timber Frame Carpenter...l Love these Jetted Buildings!... Would you have or is there a link for any internal views of these Wonderful Buildings....Thank You for Showing this...Cheers
Thanks! This is what I can find. www.turkiyenintarihieserleri.com/?oku=1179
@@AtHomeInTurkey Thank You....
I can imagine those beautiful narrow streets and homes busy with people going about there daily lives years ago, such a beautiful place, love it. Thank you Ellis for showing us all these hidden gems.
Yes, it does get the fantasy going doesn't it
Wow.. I love old places like this..never heard of Kula!
It was a first for me too. But boy, what a place!
Each house with different features how lovely.
It is. I so loved it there.
Amazing Ottoman and Greek houses - then behind a door and high walls a whole other space opens up! Thank you for sharing.
It's simply amazing what you find behind those walls. Huge gardens etc. I just can not go there
@@AtHomeInTurkey You showed the one that as you said is now a hotel - it was a Wow seeing those interior courtyards. Loved the colours of the buildings too - and the tiny narrow streets / lanes.
@@veronicarunge2241 It was amazing, but I want to see more of them haha
Beautiful ❤
Ottomans persecuted all Greeks and Armenians and invaded the country but muslims don't have the knowledge to repair or maintain these historical buildings.
Hey Ellis, what a crying shame that such a beautiful little town has become so dilapidated, with so many interesting architectural features and all
Yes, super sad. Money goes the wrong way in this world.
Thanks for taking us to these walks, Ellis! I love seeing all these villages 🥰. So much character 🤗. Feels like each house, each street and each corner has a story to tell 👍😉.
You are so welcome! It's so much fun to explore them.
It is very sad to see the old houses that have been demolished in Türkiye. Do they think modern buildings are good looking ? People don't go and visit countries to see ugly modern buildings, usually people go to a particular country because of its preserved old towns and its beautiful architecture. What a shame that Turkey is governed by narrow minded individuals ! It is very sad to see foreigners actually appreciate more and respect more the cultural heritage of a country that isn't even theirs then the very people of that country ! Who likes modern buildings anyway ? I sure don't ! Why not build modern buildings in the exact same style as they used to be ? Its like people don't take pride in what they build anymore, it is all done as quickly as possible for as cheap as possible and no care what so ever is given to the beauty of buildings today. Thanks for sharing I hope to visit Turkey one day hopefully before the remaining few old towns are torn down or turned into Disney lookalike of what the actual real thing is. I edit my comment because I blamed the government of Türkiye for doing this but it isn't really their fault, it is more because of ignorance and lack of knowledge in general on the part of the public today. Hopefully things will change and there will be a complete cessation of any destruction of any of those buildings.
Thanks! Do visit, it has a lot to offer.
Because these historical buildings were built by Romans, Greeks and Armenians. Ottomans persecuted them all and invaded the country. But now muslims don't care to preserve them, plus they don't have the knowledge to maintain the engineering constructions. Even their mosques that used to be stunning churches and cathedrals like Ayasofya in Istanbul are built by Romans, Greeks and Armenians, are falling apart or they have to hire Christian architects to maintain. It's sad, very sad.
I loved this. In Portugal it's the same. Beautiful old buildings falling down. I hope to visit Turkey.
As I would love to see Portugal one day.
Great video. Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks.
Thank you very much for this beautiful video, which I enjoyed watching very much.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Very interesting. The kind of places I'd like to explore, old quiet town. It seemed to be a busy neighborhood but now abandoned. I wonder what the story is behind it. But yes, it's a beautiful town ❤ Thanks for the tour. I'd like to visit Turkey one day and wonder if you can show me around places like this😊 You gained a subscriber.
Welcome. The places I visit look abandoned but are not. Because of Dog Timo, who has to stay in the car, I visit those places very early in the day. Sometimes as early as 7 in the morning. People are just not out and about yet.
The history behind these buildings is very easy to find on the internet. Ottomans persecuted the Greeks, Romans and Armenian and invaded the country but unfortunately muslims don't have the knowledge to restore and maintain these historical buildings.
@AtHomeInTurkey Why you don't mention ARMENIANS owed these entire lands.
Please explain one more time why you are home less.
Thank you Ellis!!! What a trip! Gorgeous and SO QUIETTTTTT lol❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤💔

The original inhabitants of this town were Greek. Thus the Greek original architecture, which the Turks copied after their invasion. Some of the greek descendants were turkified and converted to Islam. Churches were converted to mosks and any form of Hellenism was wiped out.
The buildings were built from the beginning of the 17th century until the beginning of the 20th century. That makes them Ottoman to the people in charge of official sites. Who where the first to ever do so? That's an endless fight I don't get into. Where did the Greeks get there inspiration from? etc etc
I have to say that they do look different to the old Greek towns I have seen at the coast. Where the Greeks actually lived until 1922
@@AtHomeInTurkey en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kula,_Manisa. Read history.
Exactly!
