  • I happened to be at sound check when this living legend (Jim McCarty) came on the stage. A very personable gentlemen who was more than willing to spend some time chatting. I have many 30+ year old 8 x 10 pictures of him when he was lead guitar for the Rockets. If only I would have known, I would have brought them for him to sign. This guy is a class act. Just 2 pedals and Fender Twin Reverb is all he needed to bring down the house with some sweet blues on his 93 Les Paul Custom. ...and I haven't even mentioned Joe Bonamassa. Throw these two together and Dayum!!! You have a fricken Blues Deluxe... The song choice said it all. I feel very fortunate to see it happen. Blues doesn't get any better than this!

    One day in the summer of '72 I was in Strings and Things in Memphis and had just bought the '65 strat of my dreams for $225!! So I sat down ...plugged in a old champ amp and started to play .....and I look over at the front door and here comes Jim McCarty and he sits down across from me pulled his LP out and plugged in and we start jamming and I new all of his Cactus songs, so I go into Brother Bill and played the solo note for note and he smiled and I was in heaven!! He said he thought I sounded like EC.....well... man I was soooo lucky to meet him. I was 18 yrs old and I'm from Maryland and just happen to be there checking out Memphis, looking for a gig and found the deal on the Strat all in 1 day. Talking to Jim and he said he lived here now and was putting a new band together and was looking for a bass player and I just happen to be a bass player...it was my main inst. So he gave me his address and said come on by and try out. Like I said he was 1 of my idols so I couldn't sleep all night. Went there with a friend who was a singer and we sat down and started jamming some blues and I had a fretless bass and was doing my Bogart type stuff and he said It's not what he's looking for. I blew it! Should have keep it simple blues. He told me he thought I was very good guitar player and I should pursue that. I grew up in a music family and I play all the instr. So I moved to Nashville and in '73 got the gig playing bass with the Charlie Daniels Band and let my bass work ...work! But I love Jim's playing and he is really a good dude too! sorry for the long post and not using paragraphs!

      Dude, were you playing with the Charlie Daniels Band when they opened for The Allman Brothers Band at William and Mary Hall in Williamsburg,VA in about 1974 right after they lost Duane and Berry?I was THERE and you guys blew the doors off the building!!! One of the best live concerts I've
      ever seen. No Place Left To Go has always been one of my favorites. The original lineup was the best ever! You're one hell of a bass player! RIP Charlie. You were a true Patriot.We miss you.

      +David Henderson *I know what you mean David, i thought it was a harp or Joe hitting an accent to the intro--But that ain't Jim McCarty's style to let someone interfere with his lick/solo! It's that Overdrive on the Ibanez Tube Screamer McCarty uses--plus his vibrato. Seen Jim with all those early bands also Dave, and i still see him around the Detroit area a lot. He plays in St.Clair Shores at a lounge called the...Blue Goose, regularly. C'ya. *P.s. This reminds me of J.Geils 'Wammer Jammer'. Peter Wolfee' sings out the the harp part momentarily, our harp player could never hit that note, till he figured out it was Peter's voice--hahaha.

    I was around 20 yrs old when Cactus released their first album about 71 - 72. After playing it I intuitively knew that Jim McCarty was something special, like a Duane Allman or Johnny Winter but better. Now this was long before the internet and information was scarce and hard to come by. Finding out he played with Mitch Ryder made sense as just the guitar solo on Devil with a Blue Dress On was NOTHING short of amazing. I expected big things from Jim, but he just seemed to fade away. Was I the only one who saw it ? Did no one else hear and recognize his talent ? Well many years passed, many. And I was just surfing the internet and thought of Cactus, which led me to Jim. Well, I'm sorry it took so long, but it seems I was not the only one who realized Jimmy's talent. The list of top rated guitarthat that have played with him is impressive as is his fan base. I don't understand why the industry neglected him and he never had an "A" list band and toured to sold out stadiums. But I'm just grateful that he continued to play, proved me correct and is still going strong. He appears to be very, very well liked by other musicians and tons of fans. And is quite the gentlemen and a class act. A truly overlooked guitarist who should probably be holding the crown of best American guitarist. Taking nothing away from the likes of Warren Haines, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Walter Trout or Coco Montoya. But Jimmy is old school 60's - 70's rock from what I call "foundation guitarists". The era that really started it all. I'm keeping British guitarists separate, Clapton, Page, Beck, Lee, Mick Taylor, Waters, Kim Simmonds, Frampton and the like must be rated separately unless you have the very rare exception like Derek and the Dominos combination of Duane Allman and Eric Clapton. But that's a discussion for another day. Keep playing Jimmy, we love to hear you.

    Jim McCarty is one of those cats that never seemed to get old, he’s as cool and badass here as he ever was. He’s not my favourite guitarist, but for some reason I have somewhat of a fascination and admiration of his character as a musician, not just as a guitarist, and a strong sense of respect for him. True musicians musician I suppose

    Now go listen to the original Jeff Beck w/Rod Stewart version from the Jeff Beck Group's debut album, 'Truth'. Not only is it a classic poke at the blues, Rod Stewart is cheeky (yes, Rod could be fun). It also features the mighty Nicky Hopkins on piano, Ronnie Wood on bass and the late, great Micky Waller drumming. And Jeff rips it up. With all due respect to Mr. Bonamassa, his 'blues voice' affectation really neuters this tune. Nice to see Jim McCarty, someone who really knows his stuff, playing it cool. For those who may not know, it was McCarty who Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert brought on board in lieu of Jeff Beck (seriously hurt in a car crash) for what became Cactus (later Beck joined up with the dynamic rhythm duo for Beck, Bogert & Appice).

      MrCherryJuice hey, I just discovered your reply. I think we are of the same mind on this matter. I have the Truth album on the original vinyl. I bought it again on CD over 10 years ago and I am still loving it. JM is so underrated. Reminds me of the late Hubert Sumberland who backed Howling Wolf, another great player that almost passed unrecognized.

      @wayneblanchard97 9 лет назад +1

      tilliekay56 - One thing I find interesting - and sometimes dismaying - is that each generation of guitarists seems to ramp up the volume, speed and aggression of the playing of the previous players they were influenced by. Clapton on the 'Blues Breakers' album was sheer aggression and nastiness (he claims to have been 'fuelled by ego and anger' at that point in his life), Hendrix was speed and busy-ness when covering Howlin' Wolf's 'Killing Floor', while Yngiwe Malmsteen is hyper shredding when doing his Blackmore-inspired thing. Hubert Sumlin, Chuck Berry and even Buddy Holly were influences, but those influences were then channeled through Les Pauls and Strats cranked up through the likes of Marshall stacks and Fender combos. Indeed, one of the few guitarists to come close to respecting the originators in that sense was Peter Green during both his Mayall and early Fleetwood Mac days. Jeremy Spencer from the latter would also fit that bill. Otherwise everyone, Beck included, took something relatively sparse and simple and cranked it up, often sped it up and employed it as musical muscle. I should add that this is an observation, not a criticism. That said, in many cases too many players relied more on that muscle than they did musicality. Drummers can be just as bad, as if they're attempting to pummel the audiences into submission. As for Jim McCarty; yes, way, way, way underrated. But then so were Michael Bloomfield, John Cippolina, Moby Grape's Jerry Miller... too many greats were either under or off the radar by the mid 70s.

    • @tilliekay56
      @tilliekay56 9 лет назад

      yeah man I agree. Forgive me for misspelling Hubert Sumlins' name. Just finished watching a video with Gary Moore and Albert King also Albert Collins. Check these guys out. Another case in point, Gary jetted through all the blues songs like a supersonic missile while still keeping the essence of what he was trying to convey to the audience. I watched all of these guys and I really love all of the differences.

      +Wayne Blanchard Lots of people don't know this Wayne, but Jimmy McCarty(Detroit Wheels/Cactus) started out playing drums--not gee tar! How ironic the Yardbirds shared the same name and instrument. Jim picked up the 6 string when Johnny Bee started playing drums. Bee and Jimmy go way back as kids forming their own band. P.s. Jim's son Dylan McCarty is an accomplished drummer, and Jim still sits in on the skins at the Blue Goose(St.Clair Shores, Mi.) open jams.

      +Denny Mcfastlane - Thank you, Denny. I had McCarty on record back in the 60s with Mitch Ryder and later with Cactus - he was always 'sizzling' on those strings. Had he come out of London he would have been one of the guitar hero greats the media love to make us believe are the only guitarists on earth. Johnny is a fine player. I've never met him, but also seems like a nice guy based on phone conversations some years back. I've known Carmine for years and he thinks a lot of McCarty's playing. All these guys deserve much greater credit and respect than what they've received thus far.
