- Montenegro is building one of the most expensive highways in the world. It is financed by a loan from China. Its tourism-based economy is being crushed by the pandemic making the already difficult loan impossible to pay back and the motorway still isn't finished.

7:28 sign says “Please keep this area clear” and the woman reads for the ease to make her point “please keep this area clean”. Clear and clean are two different things. Keep clear is just not to park materials (on a pallet for example) and vehicles there. So keeping it clear does not automatically translate to keeping it clean.
She was actually talking about other text on that sign. Not the one they showed on camera. I only know because I studied Serbian and it was written on Serbian below.

It is not a road to nowhere, Montenegro is a small country however it is also a very mountain country where the north part is separated from the south and central part by huge mountains. 44km of high way connects these two parts and work is in progress to link with highway from Serbia that is already being build... And NO we will not go bancrutpt. EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development ) has already published the tender for the second faze...

Lead to nowhere? You joking right? it leads to ease of trade from the sea to another country. It renders useless because it's not yet finished.
The $1 billion loan is for the contruction of the first stretch, which is only 41 km long. So as of now, it is a highway to nowhere. Montenegro is going to need billions of dollars more in order to complete the whole 430 km highway, which is money they don't have.

@@alrizo1115 Yeah, it's montenegro's fault. Politicians in developing countries want big infrastructure projects to gain more political support, even though their countries can't afford them. But China has a habit of offering massive loans to these countries, knowing that they won't be able to pay them off.
@@nicholasfu5937 Well, to be fair with China, they are the only WAY cheaper option than any Western power. And it's not like all of them poor countries have the same unfinished projects like this. Moreover, USA alone have massive debt of $28 trillion, so I think they can't pay for it soon enough either.

What a terrible report. Complete nonsense. I am from Montenegro and I can tell you it is completely misleading. For sure there is potential corruption and many other unclear things, but this is best project that Montenegro could get. BTW : this was open project for anyone to bid, including EU and USA companies, but Chinese gave best offer, much better.
I'm from Montenegro as well, and I can say you have no bloody clue on what are you talking about. First off, the Chinese offer wasnt the best, it wasn't even the second best. Both Greece and Croatia offered better prices actually hundreds of millions better. But the Chinese offer came with an easy loan opportunity. And which part of the report did you find missleading?

Croatia is a small, poor country with no experience or money with engineering on this scale. Many countries are begging for big infrastructure loans except that EU as well as USA are also bankrupt and if you think the IMF won't squeeze the last drop of blood out of you then you are very naive.

This is certainly one of the worst videos I have ever watched. Half of this report makes no sense and most are misinformation. Of course there were mistakes on this huge project for Montenegro, but here it all comes down to just anti-Chinese propaganda. The Chinese loan was by far the most favorable. 800 million euros. Interest rate 2 percent. 20 years with a grace period of 5 years. American and European consortium offered almost twice as much.

2 per cent is still a very expensive debt compared to the most of EU countries. We mostly pay around 0.1-0.2% on our government bonds...

Europe, IMF and all other parties outside of china didn't want to finance because it was too dangerous project.

China at least builds infrastructure compared to the debt burden devastation left by the US with zero benefit to the receipient nation. South America, Africa and the Middle East are all suffering from their handiwork. And now look at the state of Afghanistan, billions in weaponary handed over to the Taliban causing a refugee exodus into Europe.

This is so much EU centric. So much propaganda here. Chinese wanted to expand their sphere of interest so they did. It was up to politicians to make sure money is well spent. As far as I know EU for many years is giving money to completely corrupted governments in Hungary and Poland. How about democratic/EU standards over there? You don't care right because these countries are already in the EU sphere. She says EU environmental standards. Well Montenegro isn't in the EU so these standards don't apply to them. Chinese gave a risky loan if they didn't steal road would be built like in many places in Africa.
