Just a quick explanation on why the song title is trumpet creeper. I think this will help you to have more understanding of the song. SO, in Korea there is a legend regarding this flower, it goes like this: Once there was a maid (궁녀) who was known as Sohwa (소화). She was loved by the King and was able to get the title of head maid under the queen. Unfortunately, kind hearted Sohwa wasn't able to meet with her loved King, even if she waited patiently, peaking over the wall to see whether or not she can meet with the King. One day, she caught a deadly disease unable to be cured. Even in this dire condition, she waited and waited for her loved King to meet with her again. Not too long later, she met with her end, leaving her last will saying 'Let me be buried under the castle wall, so I can wait for the King that might come tomorrow' In a hot summer where all flowers and grasses were bent and faced ground, a orange flower started to climb and bloom on the castle wall facing into the sky. This is the outline of the story. Because of such story, trumpet creeper became the symbolism of 'waiting in patience' (there is other meaning to this flower, but I'll only focus on this meaning as this meaning relate closely to the song). Ahn Ye Eun used this idea of dying while waiting patiently to show the resentment of Sohwa toward her King, which is shown in one of her lyrics '오신다던 님은 기별이 없다, 죽어서도 원망하리' which translate to 'I resent you even after my death, you who said will you will come and never even shown your trace'. Well, there can be a lot of error, since I don't have lots of knowledge regarding this legend, but just basing on Ahn Ye Eun's explanation on one of Korean tv program, and I wrote this while I'm half asleep, so I wish this was helpful somehow. If there was incorrect information, let me know I can edit it.
Thank you so so much for this. It really painted the picture for me to emphasize on the story behind the song and the resenting emotion she presents through her singing and this video. That's a pretty beautiful and sad legend at the same time. For a good while I thought it sounded similar to the tv-show Kingdom, but then it totally changed. The deadly disease thing probably just reminded me of Kingdom. Thanks again and respect to you for writing all this up so accurately even while half asleep haha. Are you Korean yourself?
I follow her on twitter and noticed back when (G)I-DLE came out with Oh my god that she's a huuuuge fan of theirs. That was so cute. I can't understand most of her tweets (I translate some of them to understand) but she's a cutie. When I uploaded my reaction I posted a tweet and @ her on twitter, but I don't think she noticed haha. If you use twitter and you would be able to tweet @ her in korean, with a link to my video that'd be great. Idk why I'm asking, just felt you might be able to and maybe she notices that more since it's written in korean. I'd looove for her to see it T__T I'm also quite a big fan of hers, although I only joined in recently with her release of the OOO album.
이정형 could you please provide me with some of her fanpages that operate on Twitter, or Facebook, or any other social media that international fans could access to? It doesn’t need to be in English, I just want to get updated on her activities and achievements. I’ve been following her since kpop star 5, but still have no clue how well-received Ye Eun is in Korea. It’d be nice to know how Trumpet Creeper is doing on charts like Melon, since Spotify is not yet to be in Korea streaming market, and because I think this song is doing quite well considering one of her performance video got more than 200 thousand views.
Trumpet Creeper, Neung So Hwa (능소화) has a legend. It's about a court lady named So Hwa, the King had her in his bed-chamber(meaning he had s** with her) and got promoted as a royal concubine. But the King stopped visiting her, and sweet So Hwa kept waiting for him, being bullied by the other concubines.. So Hwa died and wanted to be buried by the wall where she can watch whether the King would come back.
I'm not sure if you've actually seen the video of Ahn Yeeun reacting to this music video herself. But she was just as tripped out and scared by it. Kinda cute to watch but its testement to how well the music was produced, almost a horror movie short. Any chance you'll react to Ahn Yeeun's new single Changgwi. Also a summer horror special this time calling on a Korean folklore monster as her concept. She is such an underrated artist, I wish more people got to know about her outside of Korea. I recently found out about her at the start of August and have had great difficulty finding much English content or fandom for her so I'm definitely happy to see someone like yourself reacting to her content.
Her songs have a strong Korean feel. Maybe it might sound strange to people from other countries. However, it can be said that her songs are the best expressions of Korean songs. As a Korean, I am very happy that people from other countries like Korean songs like this.
I LOVE her songs so much, her whole OOO album was amazing. I am so happy that she fulfilled her fangirl goal of working together with Soyeon of (G)I-DLE now as well - this woman lives her dream(s) lmao. You are right, this sound is very different and feels very korean. I like it a lot!
There's a legend about the flower, the title of this song. The man she loved left her behind and she died waiting for him all her life. She's waiting for him as a flower even after she's dead.
In details, it was about a woman who worked in a royal palace received the attention of a king and become one of his concubines for her charm and beauty. However since then, the king has never returned to visit. She waited and waited for him to see her…. But this caused her to develop a love sickness, deteriorating her health and died in broken heart. Her last word is “Bury me by the wall…I want to wait for him still…” and in her buried place, the flower bloomed and that was known as 능소화.
The title of the song is the name of the flower where the queen died while waiting for the king in the palace. Neungsohwa is a type of vines, and it means to watch you even after you die.
OMG, Thank You very much for the reaction video cru3l_tmo, love your attention to the details in this MV ^o^v and I have to say, I do wholeheartedly agree that Ahn Yeeun's Voice is Amazing, also Happy Birthday, have a Good One and Cheers^o^v
Hahahaha, this comment made my day. Thank you so much!!! You are actually one of the first people to congratulate me lmao. Thanks again, really appreciate it :)
If you don't know her OOO album yet: you should listen to it. It's a very good showcase of what she is capable of vocally. Really love the whole album cause it tells a story aswell
If you like Ye Eun’s music, I recommend the song “Women’s March”. It is one of my favorites from hers, she projects the emotion so well that I get goosebumps no matter how may times I listen to it. The same goes for Red Ties and Magic Lily, I cried when I first listen to them, and still occasionally tear up whenever they come up. I think Women’s March is to remember the contribution of the women in the independence movement during the period of Japan colonization, so the song has a history to it, really powerful as well as interesting.
That sound good! I added those three songs on my list, thank you! And yes, she also gives me goosebumps with her vocals quite often lmao. She has such an unique tone, it's refreshing
혹시 몰라서 찾아봤는데 있을 줄은 몰랐어요 영어를 포기한사람이여서 무슨말인지는 모르겠지만 그래도 재밌게 보고가요ㅎㅎㅎ I looked it up just in case, but I didn't know there would be. I don't know what you mean because I gave up on English, but enjoy itHahaha
