    Synopsis
    In this drama set in the famine-stricken Satake domain in Ugo, Akita, a covert struggle emerges over a hidden silver mine. The protagonist, Kyōshirō, played by Tamura Masakazu, is hired to investigate the domain's internal affairs. He encounters Tomoe (Minamino Yōko), a sickly courtesan, and decides to free her, but she dies during a conflict. Tomoe's death leaves Kyōshirō with a foreign silver coin crucial to the domain's fate, a relic from her father. Kyōshirō then meets Nanakusa Kikusaemon (Tsugawa Masahiko), the domain's surveillance officer, who asks Kyōshirō to take his daughter, Shizuno (also played by Minamino Yōko), to Edo. Shizuno, who strikingly resembles Tomoe, adds complexity to the story. This drama, the second in the series, is noted for its elaborate production and special effects. A poignant scene reveals Kyōshirō's backstory, contrasting with his usual stoic nature. Additionally, Takeshita Keiko impressively portrays both Kyōshirō's mother and the spy Mihoyo, enhancing the drama's appeal.
    About Nemuri Kyoshiro
    Nemuri Kyoshiro, the main character of Shibata Renzaburo's samurai novel series, began serialization in 1956 in Weekly Shincho as Nemuri Kyoshiro Burai Hikae This series, alongside Gomi Yasuyuki's Yagyu Bugeicho sparked a samurai boom and led to numerous adaptations in film, television, and theatre.
    Kyoshiro is a complex character, blending the nihilistic swordsman archetype, originated from Kyokutei Bakin's Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, with Shibata's distinctive dandyism. Born of a Portuguese Jesuit and a Japanese woman, Kyoshiro embodies a sense of nihilism and a cold brutality, often killing without remorse. He carries the famed Musou Masamune sword, historically linked to Toyotomi Hideyori, and employs a unique sword technique known as Engetsu Sappo As noted by film critic Sato Tadao, this series breaks from traditional Kabuki, where romantic roles are reserved for handsome men and heroic figures typically avoid romantic entanglements, contrasting with Western ideals of chivalry.

    I can see why this Nemuri Kyoshiro movie is so popular. I was fortunate that It was the first Nemuri Kyoshiro movie I watched. Beautiful cinematography and well acted. The opening tells the back story well. And, as others have mentioned, Masakazu Tamura brings a unique and elegant style to his sword play. Thanks for posting these movies.

    The actor who plays Kyoshiro is excellent. His stance and the way he walks when confronting enemies is so original and unique. He's like a ballet dancer.

      He surely doesn’t walk like a Samurai alright.
      He lifts his toes up too much, yes, like a dancer.
      Samurai must maintain full balance always. Hence walking in a special way.
      26:45 Lady Omiyo-no-kata walks more like a Samurai than him. 😂😂

    I've seen quite a few of these Nemuri Kyoshiro pieces now. They're great, and I love them, but I have this constant nagging question: Where did this orphaned half-breed outcast get his comportment, manners and advanced combat training? Is there a backstory episode somewhere? Yes I know we see him training in wgat looks like a monastery, but no one is ever seen training him.

    • @KittymoreJoy
      @KittymoreJoy 10 месяцев назад +6

      Great question . He was raised by a monk is spoken of in the Movie. Yet, his sword training is not told. You can learn manners by watching others but the Movie does not disclose who or where he learned his sword technique. He was 15 when his mother kills herself, he buries her alone, his father having abandoned his Missionary Catholic faith into a twisted sexual cult. He is truly left to survive in a society that does not condone “ the half-breed offspring of any one not Japanese. These children were often killed at birth or raised to be Assassins. “Born under a Unlucky Star” “ A curse to Women because being around him means their death “. My take a Master of the Moon Killing style came across him, as he was in a fight , saw potential and trained him as a killer to be used by an elite backer. Except, his basic kindness could not be beaten out of his character and he decided his own path of darkness on his terms, not anyone else. How that spark of humanity remained under the brutal training , being an outcast, no family, friends or home- is remarkable, but a problem for his Master who may have decided to kill him since he could not be controlled. I could be way off but that the sense I get from his character. Any other ideas , out there? Would love to hear about them.

    Toshiro Mifune is best actor than this guy!

    • @BigHenFor
      @BigHenFor 9 месяцев назад

      Taste is subjective, never objective. Both are excellent actors but they are different types of actors. Mifune had a busy face, and never played his parts with stillness. In contrast, this actor has a different technique, poise, stillness, and elegance, which makes you look at him in a more focused way. You have to look into his eyes to try and see the character within. That means you have to be a really good actor to match that quiet intensity. The actress who played Omiyo was that kind of actress. Her acting was impeccable. Poise, elegance, self-control, power, softness, and range from soft to hard. Excellent!
      Both actors have their strengths and weaknesses, and certain roles suit them. Mifune would struggle with Koshiro's role, as it would want to do more with it, as he is a born character actor, and that might not express the existential prison of loneliness and aloneness of Koshiro, who's only alive when he's killing, as well as this actor does. I enjoyed his performance, as much as I have enjoyed the ones of Mifune's I have seen. But different strokes for different folks.

    • @KittymoreJoy
      @KittymoreJoy 10 месяцев назад +2

      I have watched both actors. Each is his own interpretation of the character. Tamara’s slim build and facial features lends itself much more true to biracial heritage. I personally prefer the aloof cat like physicality of his movements, very precise, no wasted movement. His face betrays no emotion, his eyes are veiled, a coiled spring beneath a calm , controlled exterior. He exudes a confidence in his sword skill that makes other men jealous and so they must challenge him. To Women, they sense the pain in those eyes, the loneliness in that erect shadow, the sensuality that if released could overwhelm them. Like a moth to a flame, Women feel that heat and crave the desire to feel unleashed and indulge in all the layers of being a woman enjoying her sexuality. Not something, society allows. Proper women are only allowed the missionary position, being the passive partner, not actively pleasuring herself with her partner’s body. The bad girls - can go much farther, more positions….. A wife is duty, a mistress is for pleasure begins to make sense in view of these restrictions.

      @@KittymoreJoy Thank you very much for your lesson.
      Have you seen the TV series Nemuri Kyoshiro acted by Takao Kataoka片岡 孝夫(かたおか たかお)?
      Once Tamura Masakazu played one of an assassin group against Nemuri Kyoshiro and was killed by Kyoshiro acted by Hiroki Matsuyoshi.
      This is the reason I am not used to the Nemuri Kyoshiro acted by Tamura Masakazu.
      It drove me to recall the assassin who was killed by Hiroki Matsuyoshi whenever I saw Masakazu.
      This probably might be considered some kind of psychological press.
      I saw many famous actors play Nemuri Kyoshiro and Masakazu's Kyoshiro was the last one I saw.
      Maybe some people consider he is a cool version of Kyoshiro, but I could not read his psychic activity.
      Besides, I don't like his unique voice.
      Thanks.

      @jojoanggono3229 9 месяцев назад

      @@KittymoreJoyvery much agree with you about Tamura sword fight. It is very efficient and only strictly necessary movement (sword strokes). I think it's rather a paradox that it is as if Tamura refrained from unnecessary killing and he did not seem to take pleasure in killing, contrary to Raizo's version.

    • @KittymoreJoy
      @KittymoreJoy 9 месяцев назад

      @@jojoanggono3229 you are so right about the paradox. He does not take pleasure in killing even when it is warranted , not an easy line to not cross. It means he still has a heart, tho incased in ice- still a moral compass. That to me is why I am so drawn to the character he created. A very underrated actor in my view.
