Finally someone knows how to make a video on handles that is worth watching, most videos I see on RUclips are a bunch of crap and when they are done it’s looks like a 2x4 they pounded a head on. Good Job! Thanks for doing it right!!

The end of those axes are very similar to pistol portion on a rifle stock. Great wood work my man.

I had never thought of that but now that you mentio it, I absolutely see the similarities. That's interesting how the ergonomics are similar. Thanks for the kind words!

This is a great video series. I watched the other parts before this first one and thought you were making handles from scratch. You do a very good job reshaping these it looks like. The rounded end is called a scroll end. I'm a big fan of vintage style scroll end handles.
I use a full round rasp to shape some of the palm swell. One technique that has really helped me is not being afraid to rasp up the taper instead of down the taper. That's a nice mallet you got there. Do you make greenwood mallets? One of the more useful tools I can make out of free materials. Haven't used a metal hammer on an axe handle or wedge in a long time.

Thanks I appreciate it! I've carved some handles from scratch, but they have all been small hatchets. Hopefully soon I'll carve a full size handle.
A few years ago I came across an axe an old Connie with a gorgeous handle that had scroll end. Regrettably I traded it for a different axe but traced the handle for a template and took a number of pictures for reference. I fell in love with the style but was lacking the technical name (thank you). I'm surprised how much abuse that shape can take with the wood holding up so well.
The mallet is one I tossed together out of an old broken handle cut off and a small seasoned log of black locust. I really need to try making some greenwood ones soon. For certain scenarios I do prefer the metal hammer over the wooden mallet. I think each have their place though.
I appreciate the feedback man. I always enjoy watching your videos 👍

    Looking forward to part two!
Also: is that little dark spot a knot? If so does that concern you as far as the integrity of the handle goes?

Thanks for checking out the video. Hopefully I will be doing part 2 soon. Yes, that is a small pin knot. Personally, I'm not too concerned with this small of one. In the shaping I've done already the size has shrunken and it's possible it will be completely removed by the time I'm done. Even if it's not, I am more concerned with continuous grain and run out, which this handle is very good with.
