Very good analysis, but the other key to making those big jumps is how much harmonic information is in the intros / outros of the two songs - that plays a huge role in how good or bad the mix can sound
Yeah, that's true. What's interesting is that people like Nicole Moudaber use harmonic mixing, and she's playing super banging techno. I love that she plays harmonically, but I wouldn't expect that before I found out it was true. I think Armin is not really playing intro/outro's, he's mixing from melody > melody most of the time
I've used this technique before and it can work (I call it the "jump"). For example, going from 7A to 2A, if the 2A track starts out minimal with just percussion, you can jump +7 (clockwise) w/o a clash of notes. Sometimes the clash can work. It does take knowing your music inside and out and knowing what will mix into what. I've used a "Jump 2" (ex: from 7A to 9A) before; the flip (aka jump -7) as well. Also a block of tracks in the same key. I'll try the "Pay attention" aka jump +3 next time.

I dont think that some of these work because they are harmonically matched. For eg, i dont think G Minor to E minor should work, i.e going up three. I also, dont think the jump across the wheel should work (based on my limited music theory). I think the reason his mixes work is that he has no harmonies in his intro so when he's mixing there is never 2 harmonies at once. All of his tracks are edits to make his mixing sound spot on. How about looking at something by Tony De Vit. He was mixing on vinyl years before key mixing was a thing, but i've heard he has an ear for it and his keys are spot on.
Nice! I would love to see the way it changed over the yrs say do the asot yrmix 2008 09 & 2010 then compare them to a decade later and see if he's following a formula there as well. There is a method to the madness. But I digress would also love to see his othet sets from ultra festival 2018&2019 lol that massive 3.5hr set was amazing even tho it haf a lot of male n eveb some female vocals I song don't care for as much. Somehow he pulls it off and if I don't care for what'd playing wait 30sec n it's better again which is what I like so much about his annual yearmixes whixh all are amazing but 2011 lol n even it had a few or mor decent tracks. So if u don't do albums them maybe just the ultra 2018&19 sets cuz idk how those are so amazing and 2018s was amazing yet hee raised the bar again. Anyway umm out before. Another rant lol

Oh please, and don't forget Fatboy Slim! eg. Mixmag presents Fatboy Slim: We are 30, though actually any FS set will do. Really curious to see his patterns.
Heading up high. (first state remix) is in Db minor which is 12A and energy level 7 these results I got using Mixed in key 8. So your analysis is wrong
Well, the biggest thing is to just understand the basics of the Camelot Wheel: -1, 0, +1 mix. Those are standard. Check out www.mixedinkey.com to see our tutorials there
If Armin does it jumping keys it’s branded with names. If the same set was done by an unknown Dj it would be unmatched in key 😜😜😝
Any Eric Prydz DJ set. That's a harmonic-mixing lesson right there.
Very good analysis, but the other key to making those big jumps is how much harmonic information is in the intros / outros of the two songs - that plays a huge role in how good or bad the mix can sound

Solomun, Tale Of Us, Maceo Plex... Any festival set from 2017 or 2018...I really like these "DJ set analysis" videos!
Didn't know about about the 'flip' and 'pay attention' mixing. Will have to try it out in my next mix. Thanks!
flipping across the wheel just Changed My Game 👍
