#ILoveGay Today meets up with Dastan Kasmamytov, a young gay mountaineer who is on his way to ascent Seven Summits, the highest mountains of each continent. Originally from Kyrgyzstan, he now lives in Berlin, where he strategizes and plans for his next summit to traverse with his tour company, Pink Summits.
He does this for his love of mountaineering, as well as to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues, especially in homophobic contexts and regions such as Eastern Europe and Central Asia. He has already ascended three mountains successfully, one of which was Elbrus in Russia, very close to Chechnya where gay people have been tortured and killed by the Chechen law-enforcement authorities.
He hopes to bring inspiration and hope to many LGBTQ+ people around the world through sharing his story as someone who was raised in a very conservative society and came out publicly to create change. He was one of the first who publicly and openly came out and spoke about LGBTQ+ issues in Central Asia.
