My great uncle Jim was a British tank commander during D Day. He was sitting on top of the lead tank with the top hatch open when a German anti aircraft gun, with its barrel lowered, sent a shell directly into the front of his vehicle. He was blown 30 foot in the air suffering extremely bad burns and landed in a ditch. His life was saved when a platoon of African / American soldiers found him later that day. He was so badly burnt and blackened from his injuries that the African American soldiers assumed he was one of their own and he later regained consciousness in an American field hospital! Amazingly he survived and subsequently lived well into his 80’s. Heroes
We are so privileged to have had these brave men fighting for our freedom.
It must not be squandered.
I am British and take tremendous pride in our armed forces - good lads, brave lads and lasses.
Crazy to think itss been 80 years.. Total respect to everyone taking part and of course everyone who sacrificed so much all those years ago
Amen in Agreement with you!
Great Comment!
Sacrificed so much? They didnt have a choice, now look at Europe...all for nothing.
@@RitzOriginal1 Yes they did have a choice .. a lot of men chose to hide and not fight and would end up in jail.
@@chrisyateswebdev Not much of a choice is it ..
@@RitzOriginal1@RitzOriginal1 Getting shot or shooting yourself isn't much of a choice, but it's still a choice nonetheless...
Either way you look at it, men still died, and the vast majority who enlisted sacrificed their lives.
So my original statement was correct
My dad dropped on D Day behind enemy lines and was shot and taken out to a hospital boat very quickly. His RAF unit suffered terrible losses. Thank you for sharing this. Respect and thanks to all Veterans.
My late husband served in the fight up through Italy. Sadly, I lost him in 2010, but he was never able to speak about that time due to PTSD. I do know one thing for certain. Donald Everett Cass of the US Army loved his country deeply and like so many before him, would have given up his life for this land just as I'm sure any other member of the Allies.
All Honor to them and their service.
As A old 1st para vet i am proud those young Belgians participated...who dares wins all the way❤❤❤
As a veteran 2 para keep safe brother
They paid the ultimate sacrifice for us to be free we must never forget the past
Amen in Agreement with you! 🙏🏼
What is Biden doing there
My father was the head cook on HMS Fly Minesweeper J 306 This was his second ship after being torpedoed , and carried on the fight and after his death I never Knew that he was badly burnt at the back of his legs , and he hated the Jerry's, Now I know why , God bless them all who gave us freedom, I salute you ALL ,
Huge thanks and respect to allied forces that fought in WW2 .....we owe EVERYTHING to them 🙏❤️🙏❤️
The first unit on D-DAY was `D`Coy 2nd Btn Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and the capture of Pegagus Bridge and Horsa Bridgess at 00-14, D¬Day was on Zulu hours which was Double BST. The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry was later 1st Btn Royal Green Jackets, the RGJs was later The Rifles. Some other regiments on D-DAY at breached later in The Rifles
My Father-in-law was in this invasion. A Purple Heart 💜 recipient. He was such a brave individual all through his life. I miss his no nonsense & intelligence. ❤ RIP 🙏
God Bless all who took part in D-Day, you will all never be forgotten, we owe all of you so much that i can’t put into words ❤🙏
All the best from Gibraltar.
Awesome, thank you to all the armed forces who have served in the past and present 🙏🏻
Wonderful show of respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. So glad we are remembering today.
It was a tradition to jump a bunch of 'crickets' (the little metal "clicker" used for authentication - "one click, followed by two clicks") in during the memorial jumps and then give one to any kids that turned up. Looks like there's still some version of that going on...
Thank you. I hope these men are never forgotten. I always wished to visit the Normandy region.
Wow! What a great tribute! What an enormous feat!
My Uncle John was in the 101st and parachuted into Normandy and fought with Easy company for awhile . He also parachuted into Holland, was surrounded at Bastogne and was in the Eagles Nest and as he says drinking Hitler's booze. RIP Uncle John we miss you.
As an US Army Iraq veteran, my honors and respect to all the brave men involved in such a offensive. My grandfather was in the Pacific during the war. The most heroic men to ever serve across all allied forces. God bless you gentlemen
Great that the veterans are being remembered
To all paras ! Much respect to all !
Watching from Los Angeles, California, USA!!
Respect to my Fathers generation for their bravery.
This was thrilling. Those guys hit the ground pretty hard. What it must have been like 80 years ago for those men with heavier loads and rifles, I can barely imagine. God bless all those taking place today, bless the man of D-Day living and dead.
A friend of my late father who came from the Isle of Skye. His name was Peter Macphee parachuted into Normandy on D- Day. After first being exposed to the Italian campaign. Peter survived WW2. My father was not old enough to be called up. Peter was from the same area where my father was born on Skye
God bless them so much respect for them .
God i wish i were there!
Awsome, thank you.
fantastic! Thank you for showing our troops doing what many grandfathers did 80 years ago. The netflix series, Band Of Brothers, is a fabulous series showing the sacrafices that our forfathers did parachuting into France during D day.
My great-grandfather fought in D-Day. At some point, he felt liquid trickling down his leg, thinking he had been shot, after a short while, he realised that it was actually his water bottle that had been shot, and that it was water he felt trickling down his leg. That water bottle saved his life
Great Show! Very touching! I pray for all involved! ❤
My grandfather was there, jumped in with the 501st PIR. Respect to the sacrifices these men made.
Such a privilege to know that we still have some our WWII Veterans still with us today!
So thankful to Almighty God that America and all the Allies were able to come together to fight against the tyranny and oppression in both the European and Pacific Theatres. God bless them all! ❤🙏
Pity there aren't any flyable Horsa gliders as they were the troop carriers for the Pinpoint Assaults on the Caen Canal with the 2nd Battalion. D Company, Ox and Bucks of the 6th Airlanding Brigade, Glider pilots were ancestors of the AAC. Never forget Ham and Jam, those were the needed words to succeed!
Thank you Veteran’s for what you did 80 years ago. My dad went to Germany but did not participate in D Day. He was only 17 when that happened.
Touching tribute to our fallen heroes and the heroes that are there
Wow, awesome, the ultimate sacrifice of those brave men, have learned so much, thank you for all your service. 🇺🇸💕
All the Way!
It would have been interesting to see whether my grandfather would have watched this being a para in ww2. He would never speak about the war to any of his 7 children, grand children or my Nan. After he passed away my Nan said he would often wake from Nightmares and sweats. Sadly and like so many veterans he took it all to the grave with him. R.I.P James Hazell our hero ❤.
God bless his memory.
Bless him❤
Thank you🧡
Nice that the boss was the first out the door. I hope they all got a lift home too.
Amazing!
imgin the feelings of the frech locals seeing that sight
the crazy thing is while airborne of today jumps into combat and yeah its scary and stuff.
but when you hear of the complet utter hell the airborne went into in ww2 in planes that were essentially flying tin cans you appreciate the balls of steel those men had.
That first stick it was obvious, primary jump master made it clear; "if anyone rides the General's pack trey, I'm putting 12" of Kiwi up your 4th point of contact" DZSO, "winds calm" cheers boys.
❤❤
As an ex SAS/Para I had a good laugh when he said left and right.
What is the correct terminology?
Is it port and starboard like in nautical terms?
@@ojsimpson4040 You got it right port and starboard.
@freebeerfordworkers Never listen to Para officers. On my 9th I ended up in hospital still kicking out my twists when I hit the ground!
Good to see that the DZ Safety Officer stuck to their guns - even if there was pressure to make sure the display went ahead.
Static line jumps at about 800ft.
Nice 3 RAF Atlas, 1 UASF Hercules , and a Belgium AF Atlas 400 ,doing multipule loop drops, 4 aircraft that's all they can together must up? Canada not bothering to send something?
The British officer explained toward the beginning that the Canadians had an issue preventing them from flying.
"Previously, British paratroopers had to show their passports at any D-Day celebration, even when the UK was in the EU, because it wasn't part of the Schengen zone. The same policy applied to US and Canadian paratroopers."
All have a grate time etc for the 80th anniversary of D-DAY JUMP an so on!! From a oldswet my self an ex'service AB ALL THE WAY BROTHER FROM A OLDSWET self an ex'service AB ALL THE WAY!! From a oldswet from 2PARA!! 😊😊❤❤
Lovely sight! ❤ May I ask why they were jumping today and not on the 6th of June?
The parachute regiment went in the day before…some behind enemy lines. …I learnt that from my father in law who was part of that drop, age 19. His mission was to secure a bridgehead
@@pategan7622 Fantastic! Thank you! 👍
80 years its not that long I dont think most if any vets will be around much longer.
Brave men wee owe every breath wee take to those brave men and women They shall grow not old,as we that are left grow old,age shall not weary them nor the years condemn,as the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them
Operation Tonga, had the huge privilege of jumping in on the 75th 2019
7:09 jumpers top centre, looks like the canopies made contact.
Salute
Thank you . ( 2024 / June / 08 )
😮😮😮😮❤
They should bring back national services to show the people of England what they want frew for us to have are freedom in the 1st and 2rd world war
No flooded fields?
all those men that took part on d-day assault were brave men and i for one will never forget them, if it was'nt for these lads we would of been under the nazi jackboots and i thank them for are freedom. i served in the light infantry british army in late 70's/80's....................
We’ve let the down. We’ve given away our inheritance
5:19 can you imagine the air full?
Correction, it was Cpl Emile 'Bouetard', killed at Plumelec under that orders of Lt. Marienne and the 'one-armed' Colonel Bourgoin at the same time as the allied operations in Normandy.
Not the best choice of speaker for such a event🥴

Thursday, June 6, is the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the allied invasion of France to defeat Nazism. Very few veterans survive, but I was in Normandy for the 50th year observance, travelling with veteran paratroopers on D-Day Eve.
I was supposed to witness airborne veterans parachuting from a vintage aircraft into a VIP area, but I decided to leave my space to a veteran, so I walked into Ste Mere-Eglise, the first French town liberated by our paratroopers, to wait for the parade- the ceremonial re-enactment of the battle- to assemble in the church square where the carnival of American television- Bryant Gumbel and Joan Lunden- were all broadcasting to the US and the world.
As I moved through the mass of people to photograph the parade, I was overtaken by a surging throng screaming “Vivre Americain! Merci Americain!.” I kept saying, “Je ne suis pas une veteran!” but it didn’t matter. They wanted to physically embrace Americans today. I have photos of the parade.
A line of mounted Gendarmerie cleared the path. The 68-year-old airborne veterans who had jumped again raised beer cans and cheered. Then- General Hugh Shelton (future Chairman JCoS) led combat-ready detachments of contemporary American paratroopers, fresh from the fight against Iraq.
The victors of Desert Storm saluted the victors of Normandy with a triumph that would have paled Ceasar. The best light infantry of any army, anywhere, at any time in history, were feted by thousands of grateful, free people from around the world, their clamor to render all honors and glory to the airborne forces of the United States.
Am I missing something or was it on the 6-th of June
Correct me if I’m wrong, I think they jumped the night before D - day.
Not forgetting the Pathfinders who parachuted in early in order to set up the radio beacons, so that the pilots knew which areas to drop the troops into. Several aircraft were hit by German gun emplacements, leading to many "sticks" jumping too soon or losing their lives in the burning aircraft.
Paratroopers landed the night before. They jumped out of the planes into total darkness. Just imagine.
Uncross your arms soldier, you'll grow boobs lol. Well thats what they told us in the day. Yes respect to the forces of the day, fewer left each year.
Getting ready for the big push to Moscow
but dont forge the nice good looking Canadians
Just don't stop here, carry on to Ukraine
Guest: Why dont they commemorate using original equipment?
Kid: Probably cuz none of the original paratroopers are around anymore.
Talk the the truth the French asked to see the passports of the guys dropping in I find this a complete insult could not imagine how they felt
❤🇨🇦🇬🇧🇺🇲
The Real jumps were done at night landing in flooded fields
The americans never had quick release parachutes
Resulting in many drowning!
They were brave men, also the Allied Forces and then there were the French.
What the hell are those civilians doing that close to the DZ?!
bit late guys
The Canadians couldn't jump i hope the liberals are proud of their defence cuts its a shame for the old canadian vets who went to see their brothers and found out their would be no jumps .
No there was an issue with the aircraft. Stop spouting your right wing rubbish on an occasion like this.
Agreed! The equipment is rubbish! That's down to the government and to Canadians too!
My first thoughts right away. They knew this was coming. But the current liberal government has decimated our military so much. Makes me ashamed to be a Canadian, not for our military, because they do what they can with what they're given. Im ashamed because of our government.
@@e.chambers2973you know nothing. STFU.
ALL BETRAYED.
Fooling no one Russia practice run NATO UN exercise.Very interesting!
Restrictions restrictions, welcome into todays defense forces 😂 if the Russisans are knocking on our doors in a couple of months there will be so much restrictions we wont be able to fight them off...
Bravo.
Imagine aborting a drop because of wind on D-Day.
🚢 Numerous illegal migrants are crossing into France from North Africa and the Middle East.
🎖 It is the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Normandy, with participation from the UK Paras regiment.
🇫🇷 French officials, appearing almost comical, required the Paras to present their passports in the field.
🤯 The speaker found this situation surprising and felt it showed a lack of gratitude for British sacrifices in WWII.
🏳🌈 The speaker criticized modern generations as not being as willing to sacrifice as those who fought in WWII.
🇪🇺 There is a suggestion that EU officials, still upset about Brexit, influenced the treatment of the Paras.
😠 The speaker expressed frustration with perceived EU bureaucracy and a lack of gratitude from France.
🗳 Strong support was voiced for a complete and final separation from the EU, feeling the current situation is insufficient.
rumour has it the troops had to show their passports on landing.
funny the frogs can't exercise similar control over their coasts.
Good reminder about the threat of the extreme right wing and other extremists working their way into the democratic system across the globe, these men fought for the human soul
Could your presenter not have worn a tie for the occasion instead of looking like he's just rolled out of bed?
Much respect to the those who took part in the D day landings especially those who paid the ultimate price.
Why didn’t the paratroopers in 1944 have their passports stamped 🤷♂️or the boat people landing here, immigration 😂🤣
Hitler had no nukes to deploy or nuclear torpedoes...
Who pays the carbon tax?
shut up
Not Taylor swift
Offset to become carbon neutral
Your mum
@@UKVeteran2024 2024 and there's people still saying that. I bet you have a very small todger
The overwhelming feeling of the veterans was utter disgust at our two main parties support of a genocide being committed by Israel. They couldn’t believe how low the UK governments morals had dropped.
How about the Holocaust during WWII? 6 million. Hardly comparable to Israelis determination to defend itself.
SUPERB, ❤Thankyou from Singapore, Cheers🎉
