There's never been a worse time to buy an Oculus Quest 2...

- Recently, my partner and I met up with some friends to enjoy a summer barbeque - making the most of the good weather while we could. But, as is often the case in the UK, it wasn’t long before the sun hid behind the clouds and our outdoor party was rained off.
Looking for a way to keep everyone entertained, our host pulled out their parents' Oculus Quest 2 and we took turns to crush Beat Saber tracks and earn high scores in Resident Evil 4 VR’s The Mercenaries mode. The people who didn't regularly use VR seemed impressed with what the headset could do and were keen to pick up one for themselves.
Knowing that I regularly write about and use this kind of tech, a couple of them reached out to me to ask about the best VR headsets to go for - with a particular interest in the Quest 2 they had enjoyed using at the barbeque.

I once got a TechRadar paper magazine from my classmate many years ago in Pakistan. I really loved it. Been a fan since then. I'm glad they're making videos.
Thanks for the heads-up
Wondering if any of the various VR headsets will play nice with each other and someone using one VR device will be able to play with or against a user of another VR device.
How can a beginner get into vr when its £399 to try, the 64gb should be back at like £199 - £249
Will never buy until you don’t have to use Facebook for this shit. What a catch !
Guess it's a good thing I got one right before they did meta.
Does meta still sell the refurbs? I got my quest 2 refurb for $50 off earlier this year.
I follow your articles regularly and I don't know why you like so much to exploit negativity. Is it really the worst time to buy a Quest 2? Pico's upcoming headset may be cheaper but the games library is a lot less compelling. The Quest Pro isn't for the regular user and the Quest 3 is likely to be released a long time from now. My comment may age badly but the way inflation is going, I don't think we'll see big discounts on the Quest 2. It is an excellent headset with an affordable price tag, certainly the best electronic gadget I bought in some 15 years
do u think buying it just to watch movie is worth it?
@@Spankyy811 check the Oculus Quest subreddit for discussions on this matter. I personally don't see it as an appealing option because all VR headsets are uncomfortable for a 2 hour activity like watching a movie (particularly if you want to munch food during the movie). However, someone noted that this may be a use case if you travel frequently or aren't shy to put ot on while on a plane/train.
@@jadrankoVRCatalans well to be fair if you buy the accessories to make it more comfortable it can last way longer to play on vr and the new quest pro is coming this year too so we shall see
A year later, and it is still worth it..
Thanks for the info!
Buy the quest 2 now, its great you will love it! Thats if you haven't already got one!
1 year later and it is still going strong, better than TechRader definitely, in their latest release they claim you should throw yours away and get a quest 3 because Alien and Batman will be releasing on it 😂
Are you kidding me? I was just thinking about getting one..
Me too, Guess We'll have to wait a few months...
Don't
Get one now, it dropped again for a second.
Wait a few more weeks for the Pico 4. It will have much higher specs than the Quest 2.
I just bought one Thursday full 400$ price and have no regret. But I did miss out on GameStop having them at 300$ for a couple days.
I predict black Friday specials back at the original price. Then back up then down for Jan sales. Maybe that's the cynic in me
quest 2 is still the best buy. PSVR 2 is cabled. Cambria costs 1200 dollars. PiCO has not the Oculus store and it’s support and exclusives. Just a sad click bait video. Not very professional
👍
The Pico neo 3 is already as good as the Quest 2 so the Pico 4 will easily smoke the Quest 2. Meta really messed up by not giving us a Quest 3 this year. Don't reward them for their stupidity.
at least there's the chance psvr2 will get good modern looking content.
@@spaceghostcqc2137 Some Quest 2 content looks absolutely great and massively impressive, especially considering the hardware limitations. There are several cross platformers on PSVR (powered by a proper PS4 via cable!) and Quest 2, and the Quest 2 is on par. Try titles like Red Matter 2 or The Climb 2 and you see what the headset is capable of. FOV and resolution won't even be much better with PSVR2 but I do greatly look forward to the (hopefully) far superior games catalogue, including of course, the new Astro Bot (the personal system seller for me).
Not sure if this is connected but I have seen a lot of Quest 2 units in the last month at auctions, I buy and sell and have never seen any before and now 10 or so come up at multiple auctions this month in my area !
That's because they can get more money for them now that the price of a new one has gone up.
@@dtz1000 These are new units I'm seeing, not used one.
I love my oculus quest 2 pro. I've had it for some time it's one of the best investments I've made and I still highly recommend it for those who want to get into VR.
On a scale of 1 to 10 how dead is PCVR? Will valve support index with another HL:A quality title? I feel like we've been languishing for the past year and a half.
There are a few 'flagship' games coming up like Saints and Sinners 2 and Bonelab. There are more linear and cinematic ones like Alyx such as Red Matter 2 that dropped recently. A few lesser known but pretty cool looking games like Hellsweeper and Espire 2 on the way too.
The mainstream has been pretty dry most of the year to be fair, it's been on indie devs tirelessly working to update their games to give us something to play. Blade and Sorcery saw update 11, H3VR is always improving and Compound finally got to full release.
@@robjsmiles I hear ya but it's really such a step back from 2017-2020's release schedule. Hopefully when PSVR2 gets going there will be some crossplatform AAA stuff with PC.
The only reason I got mine was last year with a gift card. Lol
This video would have been helpful 1 week ago. 😂😭
Same wtf
As a retail worker, I was kinda pissed changing out the sale signs for it. I already own one, but it really sucks for those who have been holding off on buying one.
Now it's the worst time to buy one. There have been better times. But if you don't have one, it is still a good buy. It is still a great value for the hardware that is in it. So worst time, but not a bad time.
Except a mainstream Quest replacement isn't coming for literally an another entire year! (Quest 3 = October 2023; this year's Quest Pro will be >=$1000). So if you want to get into VR right now, the Quest 2, even at $400, is STILL the ONLY SENSIBLE CHOICE!
Aka, "the time to buy" isn't going to get any better for over a YEAR, and plenty of people just aren't willing to wait THAT freaking long if that's what you're ACTUALLY suggesting they do... 😑
Also, there's been multiple "sales" back to the original price since the price bump. 🤷♂️ It's really not that hard to find a 128GB unit new for $300 if you just wait a bit and actually try.
Shit unresearched & misleading video is shit.
Sorry but you're talking rubbish. The Pico 4 is going to be released in a matter of weeks with much higher specs than the Quest 2, and your advice is to buy the Quest 2? No. Buyers should disregard your bad advice and just wait a few weeks for the Pico 4. See what that higher specced device has to offer, then decide which to buy.
Not to mention money talks. If enough people don't buy at this price point, they'll be forced to drop the price sooner or later to meet or get close their expected revenue.
The HP Reverb G2 is now only $199 more than the Quest 2, with much better specs and the added bonus of not having to use your facebook account so everything you do is even more tracked, as well as being an all around much better choice for PCVR. People spend thousands of dollars on new phones every year, so I don't think the Quest 2 is the only sensible choice for VR.
@@senseishu937 You haven't needed to use a Facebook account to use a Quest for months now dipshit... You can make a fake email with a fake name and make a Meta account with it just fine. Also, the G2's Windows MR inside-out controller tracking absolutely SUCKS vs Meta's. And the vertical FOV in particular actually makes the Quest 2 look good, which is REALLY fucking embarrassing as the Q2's stock FOV is pretty crap.
Also, "much better specs" my ass! It has NO STANDALONE CAPABILITIES AT ALL! Aka it doesn't even HAVE the same feature-set, let ALONE comparable specs! Higher res screens don't make up for the G2's countless other major compromises.
At $400-$500 the Quest II will never be worth it with how horrendous the quality and game library is. It makes the original PlayStation VR look and feel like 1,000% better.
It's simply not true regarding look&feel. The PSVR game library is breathtaking, esp with its system sellers (any "Top 20 PSVR games" list) that don't come close aside from the cross platform ones like Super Hot, Beat Sabre, Moss etc. That said, the Quest can look spectacular (Red Matter 1/2, The Climb 2 etc) and feel much much better than the PSVR as it's cable less, free movement.
@@marsfuture agreed , quest 2 > psvr
Night and day difference
The thing about the Quest 2 is that it's BOTH a standalone headset AND a PC-driven headset.
You can use it on the go, though its battery lifetime is only 2-3 hours if unplugged and, in that mode, you can only play games installed directly onto the headset via the Occulus/Meta store (or installed via the USB port with the device settings to allow 3rd party apps, such as if you were to gain access to some Beta build for a game not yet on the store.)
By plugging the device to a beefy PC (for VR), you can also run the game with the Quest 2 in HQ mode either through Steam (requires a bit of work as it doesn't set the settings properly at first) or, better, using the Occulus app which detects the Quest 2 and transform it into a PC VR Headset (meaning the rendering is done on the PC and not in the headset). In this state, the Quest 2 is basically like the Occulus Rift, in capacities and requirements. (This is the problem with Steam, initially, as it recognize the Linked Quest 2 as the Occulus Rift since the VR driver of both are the same.)
Stop trying to tell people not to buy stuff.
i will buy an oculus rift s instead
been discontinued
