@@WillemVerb are old unopend kodak films still working? or when do they expire?
WHY you should be able to find the date on the box it comes in.
Tokyo one is one of my fav
@@waxwork34 They should still work - the expiry date on the box is recommended use by date. The cartridges (and all film) have been known to be ok decades later but there will be compromises in quality - also dependent on how the film has been stored - film hates being in hot humid conditions - so if it has been stored in cool, dark, dry conditions helps prolong the life and quality of the exposed result. If you're using exposed stock be sure to note that to the lab doing developing as they will make adjustments to give the best possible outcome, although it won't be perfect.
It's insane how the quality of personal video cameras in the 60s-70s were better than the quality of most personal cams from the 80s to less than decade ago.
Video wise yeh, but remember average film didn't hit the higher iso numbers we have now, not to mention worse composition of them left larger grain for the most part ( dont get me wrong here, there have been beautiful films available for the last hundred years, just talking about film your average dad bought at the drug store) then the reall kicker, no sound on almost all home cameras back then. ( and yes I know sound cameras were available, but that meant enthusiast level camera, projector, film and a place that would process it) add in the fact you need a projector to view your movies and the work involved. It's no surprise everyone settled on lower video quality for all the benefits of the tape cameras.
Hell, actually the same kinda thing happened with digital. My dad went out and spent a couple grand on a "fancy" 1.3 megapixel digital while my mom kept her film point and shoot. Needles to say half the photos from that time frame, 2000ish, look like blurry washed out garbage and half still hold up today. But hey my dad was happy to just plug his camera in and make the worst ever color prints at home.
@@MrRecall200 Here's a song for ya on a similar topic.... ruclips.net/video/tq7XG4XOJsc/видео.html :-P
It's the same reason Kodak denied digital as a concept due to it was very hard to capture good quality for the time. That's why most film cameras look tons better than digital ages until recent years
It's not that digital is inherently worse, it's that digital often requires tons more light to capture the same level of detail as film unless it's a really expensive high-end sensor. Most digital cameras made in the last 15 years will blow away consumer-grade film outdoors or in well-lit buildings
In my work, I am currently digitizing old Super 8 and Standard 8 reels for clients.
I have known the format since I was a kid, but never felt the need to know it better, when I got older.
In this world of 4K footage, H.264 and 128 GB memory cards, I have only huge respect for this format, even when it is mostly without sound.
I salute you, Willem.
I'd love to see what your work is like!!
Sound isn't an issue if you know how to record it separately (hence the existence of clapperboards to sync up audio)
I’ve been trying to find a working super 8 camera for years, and I finally did today, and it just happens to be the exact same model from this video! I’m super excited to use it!
In the early seventies, my father bought exactly the same camera, I was 7 years old. It was a great discovery for me, my love for filming began at that time.
It is a very well made camera.
Can't help but feel tempted to try Super 8 after watching all those yearly-ish films by Adrian Bliss.
production quality of your videos are so good, man. keep crushing it!
I appreciate it :)
I just picked up my Elmo Super 103T today from a thrift store for $10 dollars with full splicing kit. Full mint condish wish case and fully running engine. So glad I looked in thrifts and second hand stores.
Awesome man :) I've always wanted to shoot super 8 and you're a massive inspiration for my channel
Sick! Love watching yours :)
Where do I know you from??
That's exactly the same camera my father bought in 1972 when I was eight, that was the beginning of my passion for movie shooting. One thing that I always forgot to change in that camera was the round battery which was charged to regulate the amount of light entering through the lens, in other words the exposure, so a lot of the images were totally overexposed.
I'm an old fart, so I started with Regular 8 film before we had Super 8 film. With Regular 8, you'd run through 25 feet of film and after that, flip the film over and shoot the other 25 feet. During processing, the film was split down the middle and the two parts were spliced together. Regular 8 was shot at 16 FPS.
The switch to Super 8 was a real improvement, but Kodak changed the frame rate to 18 FPS. I was unhappy about that because it gave a slightly shorter run time. I can't recall the exact year, but around 1970, Kodak introduced Sound movies on Super 8. It was wonderful!!!
I still have my old cameras and projectors. I may have to try out the Super 8 negative film for fun.
$25 for development and scanning?! link me, everywhere i’ve looked it’s upwards of $40
alecreates yup
That's what I'm saying lol
I payed 70€ for it in Europe, Austria :(
Checkout Pro8mm I think it's closer to $35
thedarkroom
I've had this Super 8 for at least 5 years and I just got it working for the first time
Me and my friend picked one of these up for 15 bucks at goodwill. I couldn't even believe we found one out in the wild... can't wait to make cool films with it!
The look of your Tokyo/Nyc vacation is nice. The scenes are perfectly exposed and everythings just so smooth in comparison too digitally edited clips.
I'm 15 and I just found a super 8 at my local junk/antique shop. It's a viceroy and it's only $30. I'm gonna get it.
@@kenolent8611 wow, you're bad at being sarcastic
Otto King omg i found one at a thrift store a couple years ago for $3 and im looking how to work it rn
@@kenolent8611 In Germany we would say: Jungchen, du bist zu spät und dann auch noch Respektlos? Man man man...

@KC TOMS eBay.
My guy never fails on the detail and depth of his explanations
I have that exact camera - Beautiful footage - So expensive to process but worth it
Andy Bowman Hey :) what camera is ist?
I got that same camera and your content is PERFECT for what I was hunting on, very curious to try filming with one of my vintage video cameras!
Awesome mate... I had the same camera and sold it... now I want it back. :)
NO WAY! I'VE ACTUALLY BEEN LOOKING FOR VIDEOS ON HOW TO SHOOT MOVIE FILM AND THEN YOU BLESS ME WITH A VIDEO!! DAMN MIND READER XD X'D
Ur talking fast now hehehehe i love listening to your calm way of talking
Right as I buy a super 8 camera, you upload this video. God bless.
Would loved to have seen a little more of your results. Currently, I am building a Hi-Def Super 8mm and Regular 8mm slow speed scanner. 😊
I ❤ Super 8
Man, Willem could be talking about his breakfast and I would still click on the video at the speed of light. Too good.
LMAO, next vid is on the way thank you
damn this guy really tuned his voice to that one note and kept it there
do you recommend any places to send it in for development?
I got mine done ages ago at Guage film when I still lived in the UK :)
Yeahhhh, I don’t think dev and scan can be done for anything close to $25 these days. Not that I’ve seen.
OverDubb yeah it’s more like 100 bucks! Sucks lol
I would try Pro8mm in Burbank, they're great! I just made a video about using their Super 8 film.
There are lots of places that do it for $25
You should do more Super 8 videos! I have a Braun Nizo 136 coming in soon and kind of have no idea how to use it lol Have a good one!
Fun drinking game:
Take a shot everytime Willem says SUPER and I promise you a good time
Willem, that camera is just for beginners. It's kind'a like a point and shoot DSLR. Me? I had a super 8 camera that was more manual than automatic. You could do scene swipes with the visor. You could do a focus dissolve from one scene to another. You could zoom by hand. So, I guess that this camera could give you some pleasure.
Why do I want one of these? So costly. But still....I really, really do
Got mine for $15 on poshmark
Tu put it on a shelf
I remember my great grandfather he always used his super 8 :)
Great vid, young man
Thanks for sharing this! I've been looking at scoring a Canon 518 for the past few weeks. Thank you for sharing the knowledge! Also, keep up the great work!

I do love this.🎥🎞🎬👍👍🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
I just got my Bell and Howell 1223 super 8 and I can’t wait to film out of it.
Bought a Super 8 camera for £2.00 at a car boot sale yesterday😎😄
I have my Bell and Howell Focusmatic autoload and my Bell and Howell 20xc projector.
Both still work perfectly.
So good info in a short video, thanks so much for this!
great video man. Super 8 cameras were my inspiration to start shooting film.
Good stuff, Willem! Although I did want to say that the only color negative stocks from Kodak currently available in Super 8 (as in in production) are 50D, 200T, and 500T.
I worked super 8 commercially in the 70,s shooting promotional marketing films for manufactures.Very hard format to work with. A lot of skill is required to get good quality pictures and you have to use a 3 position lighting set up at 3200 Kelvin. Lens are the key. A Beaulieu
camera 5008 or 6008, still quite expensive around 1500 dollars US. an edit bench is essential. Transfer master film to video tape yes, but you need a very high quality multiplexer to do it. Super 8 film production is expensive at least $5 a minute. Film cleaning and a dust free room are essential. I liked super 8 as a finished product for export customers as the colors are so much better then the electric picture. But in to-days world one needs the guaranteed support from Kodak for Super 8 production
Too true, too true. 😊
Nice tutorial. I love shooting motion pictures, though I have never shot super-8. I have a 16mm Arriflex.
Thank you for the info sir!!
this video is not related to sinister movie but damn, still give chills.
This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much! Just acquired a Super 8 to add to my wedding videography films :)
I love your minimalist shirt
I am delighted to meet you and to discover your channel. In this video, you did not talk about processing the film with a laboratory:
- Where can we find the address of the laboratories?
- How long does it take to recover the film reel?
Thank you for answering me because I am really interested in this project.
Excellent content!
Gorgeous!
The films were beautiful. Thank you!
exactly the video i was looking for! thanks a lot ( also i really liked your photography at night and photo edit videos )
Apparently many of us making our own little films gravitated to the Canon SV 518. I believe I got my own sometime in the 70s, though I had as well a Single 8 (lost by a tree, found by people gave me a ride, but got so high eating hashish before crossing the Canadian Border had to give up the search and resume trip to NC. Laughing but no laughing. I had a Bolex S8 editing cutter block. Was a satisfying piece of equipment. In fact I still have it. My viewer editor with a bigger & better screen than most was stolen out of the car I had. Far as my career has gone I am sorry I ever used S8 at all because it is not good for professional since no professional cameras make you learn loose ends loading necessary to understand when you may. be forced to be your own AD. By now 16mm film cameras are inexpensive with fantastic lens packaging et all and if you get work making commercials without having to rent a camera you may well end up with costs that justify 16mm or even 35 mm film and processing. If you can go to all digital editing then combining film and digital transfer from film for editing purposes could well give you a look that is desirable. Filmmaking is simply too expensive to be done without consideration of end usage. As much as one can edit in camera is desirable. View my documentary The Common Fools Trip to the Inauguration found now in Carter History on You Tube and others transferred somehow on Transcendian, my no money made You Tube. Demonetized to boot.
Honestly I really love your videos!! Thank you for making all these videos!
thanks for this video! We're filming a lot on 8mm too but unfortunately it costs more than 25 dollar to develop and digitize one film, at least in Germany... Wish it was different! 😬
My saying seems to hold true with these: 80 years ago, things were designed to last a lifetime. 50 years ago, things were designed to last 50 years. 30 years ago, things were designed to last 30 years. Today, things are designed to last 1 more day than the warranty.
I found my super 8 camera at an antique store for $10! It works too! 🤩
That's really cool Willem
Such a good video man 👏🏽 love the info and cool video style you got
Awesome post, I've got a brand new never used working Chinon 722p XL with 2 new expired unused super 8 cartridges. I bought it in 2003 for $30. I want to mount my galaxy s10 plus to the top so I can pre record with that and use the super sparingly. When editing use some 108060p with the 18fps super 8. Aswell having audo sync with the super 8. Filming no more than 10 seconds of video per event or scene. You'd get about 15 to 18 events over a summer or project.
I find in my dads stuff a Japanese Camera with no batteries needed. I'll buy some film from overseas and try to reveal in a local store here in Chile. Hopefully in some months from now i'll share some of that with you all.
How did it go
Oww dude! Can't never help with super8 coolness wooooo! 🔥🔥🔥
i still have a Canon 1014super8mm film camera my father purchased it late 77/78 that was a luxury camera at that time
I’ve shot two Super 8 cartridges yet. The only thing that hinders me to shoot more is just the price of the whole shooting process
who do you have process it?
@@breannawright8943 Andec Filmtechnik in Berlin, Germany. They do a fantastic job.
...andddd my S8 Canon 310XL arrives today from Germany. Perfect timing for your post, though I’ve successfully shot my buddy’s 514XL last year. Thanks!
OverDubb how much did you purchase your canon 310xl for? I’m looking at one online for $350 and I’m not sure if it’s worth it or not. Thanks!
Maria-got it for $119 from a seller in Germany. Guy made sure it was working and did minor maintenance too.
$350, wow prices have gone crazy!!
OverDubb thank you for getting back to me! Yea it’s fully working and the guy did maintenance on it as well. I may keep looking tho! $350 is a lot especially since the cost of shooting is so expensive now too
@@marialata1 Definitely keep looking. The prices have been climbing in crazy ways. FYI, I bought mine about a year ago so take that into consideration, too. Happy hunting and shooting!!!
Can you make a video on how to edit Super 8 film? I just saw your NYC video and it's dope!
Hey Willem….can we digitise the footage and screen it on a cinema hall…was thinking of using a 8 mm camera to make a short film for film festivals…
By far, the best Canon super 8 cameras are 814 and 1014 (last editions)
Agree- I've used both and recommend the 1014e especially. Great lens too
This was a really good and helpful breakdown. Thank you
Always inspiring everyone to try new things , you're amazing man :,)
I hope they will revive a digital or analog video camera like super-8x zoom.
Got a Bolex. Trying to find film and then go from there. Should have watched this first.
loved this! can you make a video on taking pictures with a polaroid through another camera
🖤 from Philippines
Super helpful!! thanks!!
Love from my heart
Thanks dude! Really straight forward info! Cheers =)
you didn't link the films you made. i'd really like to see them!
He has 2 vids i think in his channel using super 8. They're all pretty nice and aesthetic, good cinematography too
Great run through, been meaning to try this out
Hey great video….how do you digitise, archive and edit the footage…all by yourself…without sending it to the lab
What's Happening Willem
Great Video...ICouldn't Ask For A Better Video On Super8...Thank You
“These things never break”
Hi Willem, I just found 2 canon, a 514 and a 518 at the same price. Which one I should take?
Thx !!
How do you know when you finish the cartridge? I'm gonna shoot Super 8 for the first time soon
Hey :) Can you make a video how you scan film?? I watched your scan editing video but I'd like to know how to scan the film before editing
Hey! What about the battery for the light meter? What batteries do you used for that? Don’t think you mentioned it in the video.
same question
Great video. I always wanted a super 8 camera. Thanks for the detailed info on prices and where I can find one. Subbed
Any recommendations on where to get your film developed?
Hey Will, I just got a Kodak instamatic M20 movie camera,,, what’s the best film to start out with? Thanks so much… your video is helpful…. Connie
Where do you get your film developed? I haven't been able to find anywhere that is willing to do it for $25, it's usually a few hundred!
This came at the perfect time, I just bought a camera. Thank you!! 💛
you seem like a cool dude, thanks for your input on this subject. Just got a canon super8 814 zoom and I am excited to test it out :) Cheers!
wow, it’s amazing how i’m not subscribed to you or anything, but i’ve spent the past four hours extensively researching what super 8 i should buy, before stumbling upon this video in a google search thinking it was old but then seeing it was only uploaded 23 hours ago. perfect timing.
my question is, between 50d and 250d, which one is better for both day and night? 250, roght? but would it make day/outdoor scenes too overexposed? should i get 50 to be safe?
acciocarmen definitely 250D :) glad to hear!
Probably 250 as a good hybrid, it all depends though trail & error!
Wow only 3 min?! What a challenge 👍🏽
Keeps you sharp, forces you to plan the shoot carefully, which can only be a good thing right - compared to the ease of shooting endless minutes or hours of mediocre footage?
Mine doesnt have a battery pack (im going to buy one) but is it supposed to roll with the battery and without? Because mine doesnt roll… cool video
I actually do have a camera, it was my parents' when I was a kid in 70's. Thanks for the details, I'll see if I can get it working. I believe I have an old roll of film, too, but it's ancient. I should prolly buy some new stuff...? Or, I guess I could try it...?
Yes try it out! Get a film kit from Pro8mm
Really love the look of the film but too bad developing is expensive. I don't even think there's anywhere that processes super 8 in my country
love this man
