The biggest thing that changed my handwriting pretty much overnight was when I stopped "writing" my letters and started "drawing" my letters. I don't know if this helps everyone or just artists, but it really helped me. I went from having illegible writing to writing people have complemented. I even aspire to one day make my own fonts!

I do the same thing with "stealing" people's handwriting. In 7th grade, I "stole" my English teacher's lower case "a." I have also "stolen" my cursive lower case "f" and "r," my cursive capitals "A," "M," and "N," and am currently keeping an eye out for cursive capitals "I," "G," and maybe "W."
Another tip for making handwriting look awesome: invest in a Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen with a the stub nib. It has been the best $20 I have ever spent. Super easy to write with and it gives handwriting a calligraphy "vibe."

Everytime I watch one of your videos I am amazed: you are an incredible teacher. The words you choose to explain certain things and concepts not only make them accessible (which is crucial), but also motivate to learn more. In fact, not only do you help me to develop calligraphy skills, but also give me more and more insight into a learning process itself.
Thank you so much for that, and by the way, I can relate to your “M” story😉.
    All the best,
    Greetings from Vienna, Janette

I could have written your words myself. It is exactly the same for me. The process of handwriting has been a life long ‘thing’ for me. As I get older, I’m in my late sixties, I find that pen control is less consistent now. Having gone through Becca’s calligraphy classes, I’m finding that they have helped. I just love it all. I was taught a type of italic writing when I went to high school aged eleven, so all this more fancy writing is such a different thing for me and it’s such fun! Taking ideas from other people is great. I have saved so many styles on my calligraphy pin board in Pinterest!

As an elementary student I used to get straight A's EXCEPT in handwriting and there I would get a C. I just could not improve. Later in life I found that I was typical of many people with ADHD. My brain is somehow wired in a way that makes some tasks extremely challenging no matter how basic. I have recently been trying to practice my handwriting but I had no system. Perfect timing on this video!!! Thanks so much!

Oh Becca, I expected to hear about cursive! I forgot how young you are (or how old I am!). My writing used to be legible and I was proud of it. Over 30 years of computer-writing, I lost all muscle memory. But I will find (especially) a capital "L", that is embarrassingly the first letter of my name. I will slow down and be intentional in my writing. I will write it a hundred times on a blackboard. Thanks Becka!

I understand what you are saying. I am really bad at my upper letters S & M which are the first letters of my first and last name. I am also not good at lower case m and n and I have 3 "ns' between my first and last name. I am practicing and am seeing improvement but not where I want it to be. Becca's videos are always helpful.

Definietly echo the 'practice' one! Not just deliberate practice (with sheets/tracing) either. I've been bullet journalling for years now... approaching 5 I think? and my writing is so much better than it was because i make an effort to write nicely in my journal. Not because I *have* to, but because I *choose* to. I change things up every month. Over time, I've seen how other people have written letters or numbers and changed my own to reflect what I've seen. and this goes for calligraphy/handlettering as well as handwriting btw... your journal is a great place to practice both - judgement-free!!

Becca, very good tips, however, I learned the Palmer method and for me that's what I use. I know this is not taught anymore and my daughter writes like you do and I guess that's what her generation learned. I have noticed however, that since taking your semester of Calligraphy my handwriting has improved. With age (83) it has deteriorated some so I've been really pleased that it has improved due to my calligraphy. So, thank you!

Is cursive handwriting officially dead? I would call tracing those letters printing, not writing or is that nomenclature irrelevant now? I have found that after taking your calligraphy classes, I use some of the techniques in my cursive writing.

At the end of the 70's I learned at school to hand draw technical drawings and we had to write everything by hand, and yes, the slower I wrote the better and more perfect became the text. I loved to do it. Far better than using a computer.

I am not here because I have messy handwriting, I am here because I enjoy, and appreciate, your videos and watch them whenever I have the time every week. I just wanted to chime in and say that I have done EXACTLY the same thing with regard to noticing handwriting. I have told ppl I love their handwriting, specifically one or two letters or so, I have taken screenshots to practice someones handwriting (yes, I have even stolen an envelope out of the office trash can or two (pre- screenshot or cell phones for that matter) so I could take it for practice! don't judge!!) and I always admire good penmenship. I have even recently purchased a Palmers' Penmenship book as well. I TOO have a story that recalls noticing someones writing and it was in middle school (I am 53 yo!) and belive it or not, it was her lower case m's and n's!
...and here I thought I was alone in this and just a creepy scrawl stalker!! Turns out, I am but I am NOT alone!! YEAH!
Great Dad joke this week btw! Honeycomb? Hilarious!!
Thanks for all that you do....especially the really awesome freebies that always have the look and feel of top dollar items. Truly, thanks.

This is really hand-printing rather than hand-writing. If you want to improve your cursive writing, you have to ditch that horrible, unergonomic round-hand that so many schools still teach. It's based on engraving styles and breaks down at speed. It's also ugly and not very legible. The solution is to learn a cursive italic - it's a far more natural and pleasing hand. It took me about two weeks to make the transition and I'd never go back. There are a number of good workbooks available.
