  • Flying into downtown Memphis in the 60s was easy. There was an airport on Mud Island. My folks used to fly down there frequently from their private airstrip near Kennett, MO. This is digitized 8mm home movies they shot on a trip between 1959 and 1961

Thank you for sharing this! This is the first airfield I ever flew from back in early 60’s. I was probably 7 years old or so. Uncle Harold Cooper was an agricultural pilot in Arkansas. He gave me and my brother our first airplane ride from Mud Island. We took a boat to the island. Great memories!

The last footage of the Wolf River chute with the towboats, barges and crane barge are, was Patton-Tully Transportation Co. Fleet. When I was a kid spent many Saturdays with dad who worked there. The long silver building was the mechanics shop and storage. I began my mechanics career there working on heavy equipment inside there. Anderson-Tully lumber yard and hardwood truck flooring was located due east just across the street. 1242 N Second Street. A whole lot of history lies on that location. The Tully's treated us like their own family. Great people..will never forget..All gone now..

It would be sweet if Memphis would
Relocate the airport and bus station to the downtown area . The key to Memphis success is their downtown area . With the Mississippi River the city has some nice views . Sadly the city has not had any sky line additions since the 80s .

When is the last time you were in Memphis? There is a giant stainless steel pyramid on the north end of the skyline that's been there since 1991...

We've also built a $90 million dollar snack bar and boat dock that no one uses. However, it does a good job of blocking the view while driving down Riverside Drive.

Memphis has fallen off bad from the once booming city it use to be. . . Crime is the best economic . Memphis has not suffered this bad since 1968
