I have never been a Wyrd Henchman. I have been playing since 1e. I run a demo. It takes about 40 minutes to play. Center line: two 1” walls 4” apart. A treasure chest scheme marker placed in between the walls on centerline. A hill 5” on each side of the walls centered on the gap between the walls. The hills are best if they have a 1” “cliff” so that the first turn is all about movement mechanics. The models are placed standard deployment 12” from the centerline. The next turn is ranged/melee/interact turn. A model can interact to pick up the treasure. Then, they have to move it at least 8” from the centerline to win. Super simple and if an experienced person is playing one side they can explain as the demo goes along. The crews should be minions only, 10-15 SS max.
I technically played one game of Malifaux in first edition in 2010 I think. Maybe 2011. I started miniatures in 2010 with WarmaHordes Mk2. I remember when Malifaux started showing up on the shelves. I loved the models and always wanted to play. I borrowed models from a player in those early days and he and I played a bizarre 4 player team game with two of his friends. I enjoyed it, but I had no idea what I was doing or how to really play. And then I never saw anyone playing Malifaux locally again and so never got into it. I think we bought 1st Edition models to use in RPGs and Mordheim, though. Then it was off my RADAR until 2019 when the 3rd edition Beta came out. Started playing then. Love it, but there is 0 community locally except for me and a few friends who just play pickup games with eachother. But we all play lots of miniatures games, so have gone months or even a year at a time without a game of Malifaux being played. Currently our group is hot on Malifaux. You can't get the wider local scene outside of my personal group to touch anything besides Warhammer, though. Not since Warmachine died. Back then there were lots of other games played locally too like Infinity, Clix, Dystopian Wars, Fantasy, and others. But it's been years since there's been any scene for something other than Warhammer here.
It's likely we will at some point, we'd like to get to all of them. The current ones that have been shot and are being edited are: Sandeep and Pandora those should both be published over the course of the next month. For new ones, we let our mid + high level Pateron members vote on who they want to see next and then our team makes whatever they're most excited about.
I just started trying to get a community going in my area. There isn't a shop in over 100 miles that even carries products, so it's been a challenge even getting the name out there. Currently, my play group consists of me and one other guy with interest across maybe 3 or 4 others
I'm running the areas first event in years on the weekend. Only 4 of us at the moment but there are promising signs in our Discord. It's a narrative event based on the town of Innocence.
I just recently got the game started at my LGS (which is only about a year old), by accident, sort of😀. I've got several people interested, and taught a few people the game including myself, as I hadn't played since 1st edition. But my shop is having trouble getting models in, so that's a bit problematic.
The NW Malifaux Discord is pretty big. Bellingham, WA is hot bed with Portland/VancouverWa coming in second. Local game store support is a bit tough but the community is active and vibrant. One of the members even started the Malifaux Shenanigans RUclips channel recently. We all come up with ideas and figure out how to min/max combos.
