- Lucy the barn owl loves pats - which is very...odd for an owl.
Lucy was born and raised under human care, which is why she is so patient.
She is a captive-bred bird, used solely for education.
Barn owls do not make good pets, and should never be taken from the wild.

Owls are cats of the bird kingdom... I once rescued a young adult...and five minutes in, it had made itself quite comfortable in my lap, making those little noises as I patted it.... IT. WAS. THE. BEST. THERAPY. EVER!!!!

I love how almost every creature on this planet enjoys being pet by humans. XD lol
Although I think it would have enjoyed it more if he had petted him on the chest/belly than on the back of its head.
Birds keep a water proof layer on their feathers by applying it with their beak and spreading it evenly, and take great care in doing so because they can't fly with soggy feathers.
Petting them removes this protective layer and while they can easily reapply it on their chest doing so on the back of their head takes a lot of time.

@@qdaniele97 birds don't usually like getting petted/stroked on their backs or chest since it stimulates unwanted arousal. A bird will pretty much always offer its head/neck or face.

It’s for this reason that owls actually struggle more in the rain than other bird species. :)

I had never considered that before. Never once thought of the fact that the only touch an animal often receives is the claws of itself or another creature, so a gentle rub or scratch would literally be something they've never experienced before. @@keeganmoore99 once you think about it you can never unthink it. in a world where only 2 species has the power to fully itch themselves (us and apes (maybe with apes idk)) we take it for granted. in the animal kingdom we provide probably the best itch known to man, and it’s always a pleasure watching another animal trust a human enough to realize this. it’s a pleasure knowing i opened yours, and possibly others eyes to this, i hope some day you can have the fortune of itching an itchy animals head and gaining that trust

@@siregne4343 Hi, I'm training to go into animal behavior. Yes, owls do squint as a defense mechanism, but this case we can see the eyes are completely closed. It's wings are not raised, and it's body is in an upright relaxed position. Barn owls will also sway side to side like a snake when stressed, and there is none of that. We don't know if this owl was enjoying this, but it is definitely not stressed or defensive.
They are by far the most beautiful and magnificent creatures I've ever seen! Owls.
