    Al, ex engineer here, my advice would be to double up on the washed out culverts, and also build proper wing walls for them . Wing walls stop the current scouring out round the pipes and eroding the soil around them. Second one put in 2 three foot diameter tubes with the wing walls for certain. The sink holes are probably caused by whirlpools from trying to turn running water 90 degrees.
    Hire a larger excavator to clean the ditches every few years as they get clogged with silt, every time water slows it drops the sediment clogging pipes etc.

    Al, & Gina, Those once in 30 year floods can really make a mess, and destroy roadways, culverts, and even dams. It's good to see your driveway to your house is okay. Last year we had major flooding as well. Repairs were made to roads, and our driveway. The run off ditch on the back side of our dam collapsed. Luckily, the problem, and any water run off only affects us. We haven't fixed this problem yet, were dealing with clearing old trees, and under brush to come in through the back of our property in order to fix our dam run off. It will take time because it's just 2 off us working it.
    Great news your garden wasn't affected to bad from the storm Gina.

    their is a reason rain gauges are made like they are,so I would use the gauge measurements to be the proper amount ,all other ways are just stacking the amount .So you could collect the water of a 20 x 40 foot roof and say we had 4 feet of water .

  • @artsmith4669
    @artsmith4669 2 месяца назад +8

    Looks like a good spot for some of those large boulders both sides of the new culverts to help from washing under and lifting culverts out. I understand that’s a lot of repairs, but you can probably eliminate future washouts because this amount of rain won’t happen about once every fifty or so years. Good luck, others are worse off than you. 🙏👍👍

    The first washed out culvert that is still in place, the bottom most likely is rusted out and also needs to be replaced.
    The galvanized metal culverts are only good for about 10 to 15 years and needs to be replaced, especially if they have running water through them.

    My fingers AND toes are crossed for you guys and all others affected by that storm that damage was a minimum. We can always rebuild just about anything except 😵! You’ll get to all that work, just take your time and be safe. When it rains it really does pour but “how do you eat an elephant?” comes to mind… One bite at a time of course so go sit, relax and have a nice cup of sunrise with your pad and pencil and plan it all out. That coffee works for me I swear, I’m doing an addition to my raised bed garden relocating and building a new privacy fence myself due to how much 6x8 cedar panels have shot up in price! A little quiet and a good cup works wonders on this old guys thought process. 😉✌🏼

  • @puirYorick
    @puirYorick 2 месяца назад +5

    Al, you should've bought "at least" two of those culverts to replace just the rotted one you've found so far. Going double-barrelled with slightly up-sized diameter pipe would give you reasonable assurance that you're building back better to survive a similar event. Right now you're barely replacing a pipe that wasn't enough capacity with a slightly bigger one that likely would also struggle. The excavation is already there for two (nearly three) so spend the double cost before you bury another future failure with purchased fill and road bed material. All your culverts seem to need proper stone gating on both the upstream and downstream ends to slow erosion.

    The culverts that were washed out, need to be replaced with larger culverts. That will handle that volume of water. The grass is good, but tall grass will resist the flow in the ditch. Causing it to overflow. Sometimes the use of double culverts to get the size you need without getting your road too high.

    We had a rain storm come thru in June and in a 3 hour span it dropped 17 inches of rain there. Of course that was north of us and it all came down stream. A river I have in my town that has never flooded in the 70 years I've been alive went out of its banks. Several small towns around us got flooded real bad and then tornadoes. Now 90 plus heat and mosquitos

      I don’t know if this is a comfort, but there isn’t a drainage system in existence that can handle that much rain in such a short period of time. The hurricane really cut a swath on its way through!

    Our property in Kentucky we had this problem several times. I would up putting two culverts next to each other to double the capacity but not make it too high. Good luck. Doesn't seem like you will have this problem but eveyt 10 or 20 years but we wound up pouring concrete at the ends.

    @ 22:50 if a 24 inch culvert blew out and it looks like it's wide enough might want to go back with two 24's side by side

    Good morning Lumnah's. Sorry you've had the damage to the back road. As some others have mentioned I'd seriously think of doubling up the culverts, especially as the trenches are mostly there. Appreciate its an extra cost but it security for the future. Would also suggest cutting back the ditches of undergrowth so you can better see the state of them.

    Put a concrete culvert a square one that is wider than the creek, and I'll work wonders it will help big time

    Sorry for your troubles. Most culverts rust on the bottom. This is probably your 100 yr flood. It might be that you need to put in the next size bigger culvert.
