I would plant Ceratonia siliqua (from Fabaceae family) because it's a very leafy tree, it's a xerophyte species, provides very nutritional food and it's native from eastern mediterranean.

Dont give up guys and that ash is good for growing things. I once put a loganberry into woodash only thinking it might die and it grew everywhere. Plants help to irrigate the soil so plant loganberries etc.
I'm 100% beyond your decision to planting trees 🌳, but as there's other community there as well , you should include all the community in this project at list informing and have a dialogue about it, as you know if you impose your desitions to others they well be against even if don't make any sense. You have a great vision to make thrive that area so depleted . Learn to share your vision to other local communities and you will save , money, time, stress and probably have a better outcome, sure will take longer but you need to have a positive connection to others local community too , as you know you can make them thrive too and that will make your community stronger, truly create a miracle!

I live in Australia and as wonderful and good this dream of reforesting is I know that when there is a project going in Australia getting in touch with the local indigenous people makes that project ten times better. These people in the village see this as their land and need to be consulted and brought into the project. I don’t know why they haven’t done this.

My Israeli mother-in law was part of a group of pioneers who planted trees for Keren Ha Kayemet the organization which took on the responsibility of greening Israel almost 100 years ago. Many such groups worked all over Israel to rebuild what had been destroyed over the centuries. This work also provided employment for many new immigrants with little or no knowledge of Hebrew. Unfortunately the choice of tree used exclusively was a Pine and today these forests are dying off, are very susceptible to disease as well as fire. More emphasis is now being given to planting native species and today Israel is the only Country in the World that started the 21st Century with more trees than a hundred years ago.

As a child I remember that for any for any occasion anniversary's birthdays marriages even deaths etc trees were planted in their names you know after my family was long gone and I went through a lot of their papers that were left I found dozens and dozens of certificates and I have no idea I don't remember what organization did it but it was probably one of the ones you mentioned. Not only does Israel start off the the century with more trees than it started every year it's the only country that has more trees at the end of the year than at the beginning. After viewing Alan Savory's TED talk many years ago- I have gone down a "worm hole" of plant life. Living in Phoenix , Az - I have become aware of the many Native plants, and how they survive in this harsh climate of limited annual rainfall and moisture in the air. The Saguaro Cactus can not survive in new growth without an existing plant very close to aid in its early years; both to provide shade and help to break up the soil for it's root growth and share moisture during the Hot months. Planting the young trees very close to existing thriving native plants will help the trees grow with few inputs aside from the needed water!
I'm an atheist, so I didn't like all the Christian and Jewish thing, but that's ok, it's from the organisation and they're in their own right to talk bout it and so on. But what I must say is that is was marvelous! Seriously, congratulations. What Israel is doing in different fronts when it comes to greening barren lands is excellent. I didn't know (nor expected) Palestinians to destroy newly planted forests. That was certainly a shock. It's absolutely wonderful to see the project treeing this area and was inspired to see the people working so hard to get this project to be successful. I was sadned though that there wasn't an attempt to communicate directly with the palestinians. Sure it might have taken some time and effort, but that would have been quite healing. The palestinians understandibly are threatened by people coming and planting things.

I'm 100% beyond your decision to planting trees 🌳, but as there's other community there as well , you should include all the community in this project at list informing and have a dialogue about it, as you know if you impose your desitions to others they well be against even if don't make any sense. You have a great vision to make thrive that area so depleted . Learn to share your vision to other local communities and you will save , money, time, stress and probably have a better outcome, sure will take longer but you need to have a positive connection to others local community too , as you know you can make them thrive too and that will make your community stronger, truly create a miracle!

I live in Australia and as wonderful and good this dream of reforesting is I know that when there is a project going in Australia getting in touch with the local indigenous people makes that project ten times better. These people in the village see this as their land and need to be consulted and brought into the project. I don’t know why they haven’t done this.

My Israeli mother-in law was part of a group of pioneers who planted trees for Keren Ha Kayemet the organization which took on the responsibility of greening Israel almost 100 years ago.
Many such groups worked all over Israel to rebuild what had been destroyed over the centuries.
This work also provided employment for many new immigrants with little or no knowledge of Hebrew.
Unfortunately the choice of tree used exclusively was a Pine and today these forests are dying off, are very susceptible to disease as well as fire.
More emphasis is now being given to planting native species and today Israel is the only Country in the World that started the 21st Century with more trees than a hundred years ago.

As a child I remember that for any for any occasion anniversary's birthdays marriages even deaths etc trees were planted in their names you know after my family was long gone and I went through a lot of their papers that were left I found dozens and dozens of certificates and I have no idea I don't remember what organization did it but it was probably one of the ones you mentioned. Not only does Israel start off the the century with more trees than it started every year it's the only country that has more trees at the end of the year than at the beginning. You know with the Arabs flying in incendiary devices on balloons and etc simply to destroy farms and the forests it doesn't matter how good something is that Israeli Jews have put in place if it was touched by a Jew with tainted and is trashed at any available time they can. After viewing Alan Savory's TED talk many years ago- I have gone down a "worm hole" of plant life.
Living in Phoenix , Az - I have become aware of the many Native plants, and how they survive in this harsh climate of limited annual rainfall and moisture in the air.
The Saguaro Cactus can not survive in new growth without an existing plant very close to aid in its early years; both to provide shade and help to break up the soil for it's root growth and share moisture during the Hot months.
Planting the young trees very close to existing thriving native plants will help the trees grow with few inputs aside from the needed water!
I'm an atheist, so I didn't like all the Christian and Jewish thing, but that's ok, it's from the organisation and they're in their own right to talk bout it and so on. But what I must say is that is was marvelous! Seriously, congratulations. What Israel is doing in different fronts when it comes to greening barren lands is excellent. I didn't know (nor expected) Palestinians to destroy newly planted forests. That was certainly a shock. I hope everyone, regardless of religion beliefs (or lack of it, like in my case), can get together and plant trees and coexist in peace. And in the case of Israel, it would be awesome if Israelis and Palestinians could finally get along and help each other.

I was sadned though that there wasn't an attempt to communicate directly with the palestinians. Sure it might have taken some time and effort, but that would have been quite healing. The palestinians understandibly are threatened by people coming and planting things.
