+Miss Robin Martz I think its only newborns you have to worry about. Infants should have developed an immune system by their first immunizations anyway

SirJamestheIII Um, how much do you know about that? Just asking, before you take my head off. Do you have children?

no but my sister just had a newborn and they have a dog who is pretty licky (whom I babysit). A lot of conventional wisdom about germs has changed in the past decade or so it seems. After a generation or so of babies who weren't breastfed and all that purell crap we thought kept us clean has left a lot of kids with auto-immune issues (myself included) But yeah I'd be careful about it with a newborn.

SirJamestheIII I breastfed my 4 babies, but my daughter, who has problems where she cannot breastfeed, doesn't seem to have any problems with her kids in that they don't get any sicker or come down with anything more than anyone else's' kids. Her kids are VERY healthy and she takes them to their pediatrician as she is supposed to. I, on the other hand, was a "hippie chick" who poopooed conventional ways. My kids weren't any sicker than anyone else's either! If I could do it all over again, I would have taken them to the doctor more often and done a lot of things differently anyway. I did get my children all their immunizations though. I do believe in doing that. It makes me crazy when young mother's criticize her for not breastfeeding because somehow HER kids are going to be dumber and slower and sicker and have so MANY problems, however, they are bright and healthy and smart and happy and have very few if any problems. Being as I am an old wiser lady, I have seen both sides of the breastfeeding coin and frankly, it makes NO difference! By the way, a woman can breastfeed her baby and that baby can NOT be getting everything they need because she isn't healthy! ANYWAY, I digress. I see nothing wrong with trying to keep icky germs out of a child's mouth. My nephews played in a CHICKEN COUP and ended up with impetigo which is disgusting and gross and what's to say that some gross germ from a dogs mouth isn't going to cause tummy problems in a kid's mouth? Like maybe WORMS?? Better safe than sorry. Sorry, James, I kinda ranted!! :)

Have you ever heard of dogs licking their wounds? Their mouths are very clean.
