日本語の「ところ」も、昔むかしあるところに…みたいに場所を表す時と、私はこれから朝食を食べるところです…みたいな状況説明に使う時がありますよね。
Very interesting topic! It got me thinking and I wanted to offer my two cents on the subject - sorry that I have to write in English for this, as my Japanese skills are not good enough to communicate such a nuanced and complex topic.
Overall I agree with Kevin's explanation, that "where" can be used to describe situations in a more general sense. However, I wanted to further explain why I think we use "where" in this scenario. A more formal word that would suit the sentence perfectly is "wherein":
"We do this thing *wherein* we talk about English questions..."
The meaning of "wherein" is essentially the same as "in which". For example:
"We do this thing *in which* we talk about English questions..."
These sentences are both grammatically correct and mean the exact same thing. Notice that they are closer to Yama's idea of using "which" or "that". However, they are very, very, very unnatural to say in everyday conversation! You will find these expressions in professional writings or academic publications, but very rarely in casual speech with a native speaker. Therefore, my theory is that we have instead shorted the usage of "wherein" to simply "where," to make it more casual sounding. Then, over time, the usage of "where" has simply extended to include such situations as well, and "wherein" became out of fashion to use in casual conversation.
Regarding "which" and "that" (by themselves), these sound strange because they are actually grammatically changing the structure of the sentence. If you wanted to use them, the sentence would have to become something like this:
"We do this thing *which* talks about English questions..."
"We do this thing *that* talks about English questions..."
Notice how we had to change the subject of the clause by using these words! "which" and "that" continue the thought process, and so the subject of the following clause must be the same as the noun it is modifying (in this case, "thing"). But Kevin didn't want to express "this thing talks", he wanted to say that "we talk" - therefore the correct way to express this idea is by using "where" (or "wherein/in which").
As a side note: there is a difference between when to use "which" vs "that". However, even most native English speakers do not know the difference, so I won't go into it here 😅
日本語でも「どこ」をシチュエーションとして使う事があると思うのは私だけでしょうか？
例えば、「この前の会議中のどこかで話したと思いますが、覚えていませんか？」とか・・・
こんな風に質問された場合に思い浮かべる「どこ」は、みんなが集っている場面の、一瞬の時を切り取った、まさしくシチュエーションの「where」に当てはまる気がします。
小説や映画の一場面を表したい場合なんかも「どこ」を使いませんか？
「後半のどこかに登場する人物」という場合、場所だけではなく、やっぱりシチュエーションを表してると思うのですが。
親しい間柄での会話では、「どこか」が「どっか」になり、「ほらこの前さ、なんか、どっかで言ってたじゃん？」と、その時の状況を説明してる事も多いと思うんですが、どうでしょうか？
日本人はwhereはどこっていう訳が定着しすぎていて、場所に関すること以外の関係文にwhereを使うと違和感がありますよね。私も、「手紙もらって嬉しかった、特に私は今体調を崩しているので」っていうメールをもらった時にドイツ語でも関係詞にwo（where）使われていて、その時初めて、物理的な場所以外にも、状況とかにも使うんだなって知りました。日本語にはこの感覚はないから難しいですよね、私も自分ではまだ自信をもって使えません。

シンプルに"IN the situation"とか”IN this activity”というからこれらは「場所」なんだーと理解するとわかりやすいかもと思いました！
アクティビティやシチュエーションではwhereなの初耳 ケビンが冒頭で言った文章ではthatは☓、whichでも△。。 やまちゃんと同じく最後にくる単語で判断してたけど、前文全体を見て決める必要がありそう
状況、場合、局面、段階とかもwhereが使えるみたい
某言語学ラジオの受け売りですが日本語と英語は「視点が違う」のかもしれませんね。
傾向として英語は俯瞰視点で自分の姿が見えていて、
「今」の「現実」がx=0, y=0に居るとすると
シチュエーションは頭の中の想像なので「今」の「現実」からは座標がズレている。
座標のズレ≒場所で想像してるからwhere。
アクティビティも自分の姿込みで想像しているのではないでしょうか。
一方日本語は対照的に主観視点が多いですね。
例えばメインのショートであったような「前を見て！」が典型的で、
日本語の母語話者が「前を見て！」と言われた場合、自分の主観視点を想像する人が多いのではないでしょうか。
英語母語話者の場合は主観視点感覚がないので「え！？前！？どっち！？」になってしまう。
想像上のここではない"場所"は仮定法過去も近い話で、これは私もそうですが、日本語母語話者が英語を学ぶ際に苦手と感じることが多いようです。
このwhereは確かに謎でした。話の流れの中で、この場所にいるよって感じですかね〜😊

I checked the English dictionary. "where" used to talk about a particular stage in a process, conversation, story etc

アメリカ留学時代に "that" を多用しすぎて
"あなたの英語は理解するのに時間がかかりすぎる" と言われたのを思い出しました
thatで伝わると思っていたのに、理解するのが難しくなってしまうとは。。。。目から鱗です。。。。
関係副詞と関係代名詞の違いでは
situationはplaceと捉えるんですね。日本語でも「いま料理してる’ところ’」とか言うからなあ。
where の使い方が place感っていうのでストンときたような気がします😊 私もthatはオールマイティなイメージがあったので、今まで便利なthatで乗り切ってた気もするのでちゃんと使い分けれたらいいなぁと思いました🤞🏻😊
高校英語の参考書にはsituationやpointにはwhereが続くってよく書いてありますよ。
ただ、situation にwhereが続くというより、where かwhichに続く節（SV）の中にsituation を戻した場合にそのまま入れればwhich、前置詞を伴わないといけない場合はwhere になる、というのがより正しいと思います。そうはいっても、in this situation みたいな形で使うのがほとんどなのでその結果where を使うのがほとんどということです。
