You are using the wrong dictionary
All of the comments saying, “This is so scary because this could happen to the future”, are completely missing the theme behind the episode. It’s a metaphor for how the military industrial complex desensitizes it’s soldiers to the acts they commit and dehumanizes the enemy. While this story is a “glimpse of our near future” like all Black Mirror episodes, it’s also analyzing something that’s being going on for decades to people we all know.

If we are going down that train of thought, I would point out it's not the military that's the problem, it's human beings in general. Life is evolutionarily wired for in-group/out-group (us vs them) behavior. Colonies of ants will go to war with each other, killing millions in a couple days, because a neighbor colony's DNA is slightly different from theirs. They will do this when there are plenty of resources for both colonies to thrive. Believe it or not, even cancer follows this behavior. Researchers have noticed that large animals (whales and elephants) can often survive even though they have major cancer issues that 'should've' killed them, the animal survives largely unimpeded. What is believed is that when the cancer grows beyond a certain size, the variants within the cancer cause it to no longer 'recognize' its fellow cancer so they start attacking each other for resources instead of the infected host.
Elites do it to poor, men vs women, races vs other races, religion vs other religion. In grade school it was obese, people with pimple or those with glasses that were easy targets. It's terrible that so many have the 'Something is different from me and different is wrong.' type of reasoning, but we are all born with it and (IMHO) all need to emotionally grow through that type of reasoning although I don't believe any of us can address it entirely, the best we can hope for is to address it in ourselves when we notice it.

History has shown us that banks and corporations will refuse service to people who think outside of the box and object to tyranny. In a cashless society with digital currency I would expect history to repeat. Disagree with the government? Your digital currency account has been suspended.

This reminds me of another military movie where the young recruits were brainwashed into thinking their targets have alien parasites in the brain/inside the skull as they saw those simulations via goggle. And who they targeted were just displaced rebels or something like that.

Also reminds me of a movie called Congress where (SPOILERS AHEAD) they create a drug that allows people to live however they want in their minds. Very few people choose not to take this drug. Then after the events of the film you see them flash over to what the real world looks like, most of the population are a bunch of basically zombies zonked out on the drug, dirty looking living in the streets, living their individual “best lives” in their head, and all of the elite and doctors etc live high above ground. Only a small group of people live “naturally” free in small communes, living off the land etc.

This isn’t too far off tbh with all the websites like 23andme or ancestry etc. it works even if you aren’t the one giving out your dna, as long as enough people give it away even outside the people you still consider your family they can work out your whole genealogy with their database then class you on your probability of having X disease. I don’t see them going as far as in the movie, but big companies could have these data and decide wether you are worth to train or not, maybe insurance companies too

The thing about WWII is true. It's why veterans as so much better than raw recruits. The veterans actually aim to kill.
Most modern militaries use basically computer games (such as realistic rendered targets projected in a firing range to use as targets) to desensitize soldiers to killing people. This has lowered the rate of deliberately missing.
While this is dark as fuck. It also gives me hope. That the good part of human nature has to be actively worked against for most people to make them effective soldiers.
The U.S military even made their own game for recruitment purposes that they gave away for free. "America's Army" in 2002.
It was interesting how they made it so no one could actually chose to play as enemy forces killing U.S soldiers, using computer coding magic they made it so both sides in multiplayer game saw themselves as being U.S soldiers and the opposite team as the terrorists/enemy forces.

That show was insane.
There were 2 PC games I've played that had a similar premise. Quantum gate 1993 and the vortex quantum gate 2 1994, where soldiers were equipped with augmented reality and started killing giant alien insects. However these aliens look like humanoid angels and are beautiful. The head of the military were the culprit behind all these.

Neither side is evil but, it is fear and unwillingness to let go of past history that causes this solidified perceptions of "the other". I think about this when I hear of rebels or terrorists over seas. While I cannot condone and will always condemn hurting innocents, a lot of the perps dont see them as innocents. Theyve been hurt and "these are the people who did this to us!". Crazy dichotomy. As men you always have to question if what youre doing is ultimately right or just right for the circumstance, weigh pros vs cons and moral cost, and execute or not.

A happy ending may not be possible, but justice could be. One thing these dystopian future predictions forget is a particular period in human history...the age of piracy. It started because sailors were sick and tired of their society's BS, and realized that if they took over the ship and sailed away, there was nothing the governments could do to stop them. Despite popular interpretation of history, the government did not win the war on piracy. In the end, they had to beg the pirates to stop, and offered pardons if they did. Most pirates took the opportunity to cash out, which meant the governments could hunt the few remaining pirates who refused to take the pardon, because they valued their freedom more than the gold.
I think we are due for another age of piracy. Sad to say, our society doesn't do very much to buy sympathy from the vast amount of incels it has produced...so if there's a draft, expect a revolution.

It's like the Holocaust. WW2 was fought for power (particularly territory). No one actually cared about the Holocaust except those who were directly affected by it (European Jews, homosexuals, Afro-Germans, ethnic Poles, Roma, Soviet civilians, POWs, and political opponents). The Allies were fighting the Axis for power - they just took all the moral praise for fighting those who happened to be perpetrating the Holocaust because the Allies happened to be on that side. If the Axis weren't interested in world domination and simply continued their "ethnic cleansing" genocides within their own borders, it would have been almost guaranteed that nothing would have been done to stop it.
You can look to today to confirm this because history repeats itself: today we have an ongoing Uyghur genocide and most people not only don't care enough to even make the smallest change in their lives - they also likely don't even know about it because no one thinks it's worthwhile to share or talk about. We live amongst incredibly selfish and cowardly individuals who would sooner appeal to futility and defeatism when it is convenient for them than lift a finger to do something good for once.
In short, we DIDN'T learn from our past mistakes. If we want to we have a LOT of work to do, and that can't begin if we continue to underestimate the scale of evil. Nothing will get better until we do better.

had a dream similar to this where people thought they were playing a regular fps video game but they were actually controlling real life people in a prison/ Deathmatch arena and after you got to a certain skill level or a kill streak then you’re kills become real you log into a real human body unbeknownst to the player and killing NPC‘s and people on the other team lead to the prisoners doing the same exact things the game was doing in real time.

@@jacobthreadgill4948 pretty much except no one knows it’s happening other than the prisoners and it’s more of an open world thing, every time you die and respawn you just take control of another person but to the gamer it’s the same character respawning. I used to like that movie but it was more about dystopian future and one guy trying to gain freedom than it is about gaming

Black Mirror was an excellent series. I wish they would create more seasons.

Why didn't Stripe pick up the device that helps him see reality? I would've used it on Rayman. Little by Little I'd come up with an idea to get the the mainframe where I can deactivate the neural transmitters.

I believe every group that is fighting the other group dehumanize each other. So Israel, Palestine or rather Hamas.
That just the truth of the situation.
When you have one side cheering for the other to be bombed, that means they don't care.
If both sides are cheering when the other is bombed, they both are dehumanizing.
