+Eric Twing...Just a friendly FYI...a 'KEY' is the range of notes being played. You still are playing the same notes, just 'higher' or 'lower'. The point is, they lowered all the keys INTENTIONALLY for their live show. Probably to A. Help Soupy not die a slow death over the course of a tour B. So the people in the crowd can more easily sing along. It doesn't have anything to do with the songs they picked (old or new), or if they misplayed or missing. OP was just lamenting the fact that everything is a key down live.

as a general whole, they play in 1 key....usually drop C#....meaning a guitar in standard tuning is flatened from E to Eb, and the low E string is dropped a note to match the D....so D becomes C#, so the low E is dropped to C#. whether this is in soupy's range or not is kinda beside the point, because he takes care of his voice (in a matter of speaking), really the only poor vocal habit i'm aware he does is smoke cigarettes, otherwise he's mentioned drinking tea, vocal warm-ups/cool downs, and an overall understanding that because his voice is the instrument that he has to keep it in shape the way the other members have to keep their guitars in good condition to make the song happen.
and as someone who's seen them live at least 5 times, the key is usually the same as the recording. the effect it has is based on having a more melodic atmosphere, which suites the themes of the band and gives a more dynamic range of what they can do.

It said on Setlist.fm that they played a cover of Death Cab's Title and Registration, but I didn't hear it anywhere in the vid. Anybody that was there know if they actually played it?

Why do they have to play everything in a different key ;(

    • @samwiehe5606

+Ethan Grantges easier for Dan to sing it in a lower key I'd imagine.

+Sam Wiehe Yeah I guess, I wish they at least sang the old songs in the right key, some of the stuff from the new record like bluest things on earth hit pretty high notes but most of the old stuff isnt as bad

+Ethan Grantges I dont get what the problem is xD Theyre playing all their new stuff because thats what you do when you come out with a new album, and its just different, it isnt bad, in fact this is one of the best pop punk/ TWY albums ever

+Ethan Grantges Actually I watched the rest of this set it was 50/50 on new songs and old so I don't know WTF you're talking about xD

Eric Twing I wasn't talking about the quality of the songs. If you fully read my comment, you'd know that I was talking about the KEY of the songs and how a lot of the new album is harder to sing, so they play in a different tuning live to make it easier for soupy to sing the songs. xD xD xD xD xD xD.
