- Cinderella was originally a story that was written by the Brothers Grimm, and as their name would apply, their version of the story is a lot darker than the one that Disney gave us. The original tale is full of disturbing acts and gruesome images that Disney left out of their version. And while we love the original version of the story, we definitely think the Brothers Grimm version is worth telling. And it may keep you up at night as a result, so head warning. In today’s video, we are actually going to go over some of the things that REALLY happened in the original tale of Cinderella, and compare it to the classic Disney version that many already know of. Some of these might shock you.

When I was a little girl my mother bought a huge book of fairy tales. It was all of the original dark versions. I remember reading the Brothers Grimm version.
Yea me too
Where did you get that dark book can you tell me where your mom got that book I want to get that same dark book so I can read every dark fairy tail
@@mayalucifer8157i had one of those books aswell it was my grandmas so you can allways ask my great Grandma lol
@@mayalucifer8157 The book looked pretty old. I might be wrong, but it might have been published by the same company as Encyclopedia Britannica.
It was very thick and the illustrations looked like they were done in the 1800s.
What's the title of the book? Ima buy that for myself and keep it until i had children and say"you see, this is why stop imagining fairy godmother exist 👽"
I think that we are easily shocked since we all grew with the disney versions, when the original tales were actually made to scare the children and focused on having a moral more than making the children dream. They were good at it back in the 18th century, glad I'm not born then :)
Where tow find this book of original story
No actually I lived off of the dark versions instead
@@Sophie-649 me too I lived with the dark version
me too
The only reason I’m not shocked is because my favorite movie has been Into the Woods since I was six or seven, and they have the original version in that movie
The golden shoe was actually the FIRST night. The ball went on for 3 nights and each night she came in with a different outfit and shoe. Because she ran away from him the first 2 nights, the prince decides that the final night is when he covers the stairs in pitch to keep her from running away.
I don't know if you know but the original story of Cinderella was actually written by Charles Perrault, a French writer, in the 16th Century before being rewritten by the Grimm brothers. In that tale Cinderella did have a fairy Godmother, even though this time, her slippers weren't made of glass either, they were made of fur.
It's possible that Brothers Grimm was more popular than Perrault. I'm more familiar with Chinese Cinderella. Unfortunately, a lot of the Chinese culture misinterpreted the story and that's how foot binding became a thing.
Actually her shoes were made of thin leather called glass.
The original Sleeping Beauty was also written by Charles Perrault.
True except for the slippers. In the original of Perrault (17th century actually) they are made of glass ("verre" in French), written in all letters, in all editions. Only during the 19th century, some literary critics have invented against all evidence that it must be a typographical error and that the shoes must be made of "vair", that is a very fine fur. The legend remained. But it is not true.
True
There are lots of versions and adaptation of cinderella throughout the centuries. In fact, from what I heard, the story originated in ancient Egypt. Apparently, a servant working in the pharaoh palace got one of her sandals stolen by a eagle which ended up falling on the pharaoh himself. Thinking it was a sign from Ra, the pharaoh searched for the sandal's owner and married her. Interesting to see how stories change with time.
theres a really good video on youtube where someone reads the full version of the egyptian cinderella its called rhodopis.
@@crochetandCoffee747 thanks. I'll take a look.
At least the sandal was way more comfortable than a glass slipper
Either Egypt, or china.
@@Terestraszno
The step sisters thought she ate all that bullying up
Brothers Grimm versions of stories were always my favorite growing up as I kid,I always hated Disney movies for how the villains either died off screen or got off too lightly
The more gory version with the cutting of the foot parts and eye-gouging is the Grimm version...however the Disney interpretation, and possibly the more well-known, is the 1697 Perrault version, i.e. with the Fairy Godmother rather than the mother and willow tree and birds etc...
I would love to see the original version portrayed on the big screen. I don’t care if the film would be rated R
same
Yesssss!!
Boy o boy. Disney's version made my younger self cry. If I had seen this, i would be scarred for life.
The Brothers Grimm version of Cinderella is my absolute favorite version 😇
I also remember a version where her mom got turned into a black sheep and got eaten by the step mother and sisters, they even offered Cinderella to eat as well but of course she refused knowing that's her mom, after they ate Cinderella burried the bones under a tree (and the rest is the same)
I remember that version
the Chinese version, yes
…….. O_____O
I know the original story of Cinderella too it’s very disturbing. 😳
I remember it as well. It was very dark and violent. A lot of the original fairy tales were like that.
Let's pray so there will be a brother grimm version.. As a movie in theaters
CORRECTIONS: Actually, Disney's Cinderella is based on the fairy tale of the same name by Charles Perrault. It does have a fairy godmother, a magic pumpkin and glass slippers. Also, the Brothers Grimm didn't write Cinderella. They just adapted it into their collection of stories.
Neither did Perrault, technically. It's also possible the Grimms put their own spin on some aspects of the stories they collected, so even though they technically didn't invent the stories they wrote down, it's possible they still made them their own in some way.
The most hilarious thing is that in the book version he was fooled by two women who were not Cinderella. I mean he danced with her and spend an evening with her. Surely he would remember what her face look like😂
It one version her face was cover
Honestly, if the remakes followed the OG stories more closely, I’d actually enjoy them and they’d actually have a purpose for existing.
I'm truly concerned for people who want *Disney* to go dark when they are always geared towards children.
I would love too (If it's make by someone who's not in Disney), But this is a kids show so dont ever think that would happen..
I grew up on both the disney and the grimms cuz here in my country there was always remakes of the original grimm stories on tv and idk i always found them super intresting
What?!! Cinderella's father actually allowed his own daughter to be abused!!?? I cannot believe that!! 😢
thats Brothers Grimm for ya
Well if you ever read The Brothers Grimm novels the stories always have a dark tone
Yeah I actually read the Brothers grimms story when I was younger
Yea,poor Cinderella
Happens in real life
No way would I watch a movie with women cutting their freakin feet. The thought makes me crawl in my skin, although hearing the original version of the story is intriguing.
This is not so far-fetched from reality for today. My mom died and my dad had another girlfriend within a month and married her. She immediately cut him off from his first family in every way possible and alienated him from us and now we barely see him.
but isn't cinderella A version of the Egyptian Myth of " Rhodophis" I mean they maid part from rags to riches unbound kindness help of an upper diety a perfect princess a traumatic early life and basically everything it is like the first version of cinderella
I saw the RUclips video of that I like to see that in a movie or a short film
There is also a Native American story of where the brides-to-be had to answer a riddle correctly, and only the 'Cinderella' of the time answered it correctly, and married the son of the tribal chief! Loved that one! ^^
@@kaytlinjustis5643 woah yeah Cinderella is a wide topic even tho no duckin Greek or Egyptian was in native Americans they also have a similar story 😂 means everyone preety much thinks the same
I thought the same, and i still think that
There's also an ancient Chinese story with some Cinderella-like elements, and I've heard there are plenty of others. My take is that we probably shouldn't take any of these stories as explicitly being "the original Cinderellas", but there is certainly a possibility that they were sources of inspiration for Basile's story, which would later inspire Perrault's, which would in turn potentially make its way to the Grimms in some form.
Definetly would love to see a remake.
With the exception of the father not being in the cinematic version, Disney did end up essentially releasing the Brothers Grimm version with Into the Woods.
so in the grimms tale cinderella after cinderella married prince charming, annastala and drizzla got pecked by birds and lady tremiene might be a maid.
There is a dark version {Not Cinderella but a Snow White}, not Brothers Grimm, but scary in it's own right, It's called Snow White A Tale of Terror. Features Sigourney Weaver as the Evil Queen/Stepmother, you can check out the movie was made in 1997.
@@lisastevens3376 I don't want to see that I want to see all these adaptions of all fairytales.
@@lisastevens3376 i saw that one when i was like 5 or 7 and i was horrified-
I just finished reading the grimm brother's version. The father is indeed as evil as Cindy's step mother and sisters.
The grims vers arent the original.
I would like to see the brothers version! :)
I would love to see the Brothers Grimm version made into a movie!
It is Cinderella movie including some of the scary bits
I remember wasn't there a show of it somewhere? I don't know the name but years ago i think it used to be on Netflix
Do you referer to "Once upon a time"?
At cinderella's wedding, the stepsister eyes were pecked out?! What?!! That reminds me of "The Birds" movie from 1963!
Wow it does reminds me of that too . _ ."
Haaaaaaa already knew the dark version. Second lol
Actually, the Disney film is based on a version of the story by Charles Perrault that's over a century older than the Grimm version, and the film is a lot closer to it. The dad still lives in that version, and he's not portrayed as a jerk. However, he is portrayed as being unbelievably oblivious to Cinderella's suffering, so either way he's the worst character, and that's probably why he's killed off in Disney's version and other versions of the story to follow.
I wouldn't mind a version of the original story
"Rrukediku Rrukediku,
Blut ist im Schuh,
der Schuh ist zu klein,
die rrechte Braut ist noch daheim"
I actually love the original story even though its a bit darker
The fate of Cinderella's step-sisters in the Brothers Grimm version sounds like something out of a Alfred Hitchcock movie!
I'll rather have the darker story so that I know what IT really looks like
The brothers Grimm version would be a good horror movie
I mean… in the movie “Into the Woods”; the stepsisters do become blinded after Cinderella rides off with the Prince. However, Disney made it to where it’s classic “Dear Father” passed away and Cinderella’s Mother was buried under a mighty tree and her spirit turned the trees leaves into her dress
A teacher in my elementary school read the exact same storyline! But Cinderella got pecked by the birds since the prince dumped her in that story.
Glad I'm watching this in the morning
I’m loving this channel
They wanted to make it more kid friendly
as a kid I loved the Disney Fairy Tales version. Then as I got older and learned more about the original dark versions I start loving them more!
Yes I would like to see an EviL version!
BTW .. the brothers grimm version was used in the movie "into the woods" and cinderella went to the ball three times because it was for three nights.
Yes definitely I would love to see a remake of The Brothers Grimm Cinderella
I mean some of that was shown into the woods, like cutting off their feet and other things, and also that it was birds not mice.
My childhood....was all fake!😭
Solid gold and glass slippers would both be so uncomfortable
I subscribed to you and I love how your vids 💖✨
I would really like to see the real Cinderella with the brothers Grimm and everything that is true with Cinderella because I think that everyone should know about the true facts of Cinderella
If you watch Into the Woods it shows some Cinderella's Grimms story in that movie for Disney.
I'm only a ten-year old but I've already read this dark version of the brothers Grimm Cinderella story tale and to be honest, I was actually expecting something a little less creepy but other than that it was only a little creepy to me.
GREAT VIDEO
Yes please... I would watch that
I used to read Cinderella books now I'm traumatized 😳
ha ha HA! U thought that Cinderella was a kid friendly story well no sorry 😁
There's also a Lego version of the original version of Cinderella;-;///
Good job.
'Into the Woods' gets close enough....
If you know what l mean. 😌
LMAO THE THUMBNAILS
It’s giving “Into The Woods”
I remember another part. Near the end of the story the evil Stepmother was forced to dance in hot iron shoes until she died of the pain and exhaustion from dancing. I was told that version when i was a little kid in the daycare. And we never thought that it was gruesome.
You should watch Jon Solo talking about the origin story of Cinderella... Especially, that another story, way before Brother's Grimm, was the first Cinderella Story.
...In my honesty, if they were to do another Cinderella Movie based on the Brother's Grimm version, I think they should have the tree in place of the Fairy Godmother. And, that in another part of the Brother's Grimm's version (Again, go watch Jon Solo's.), that the ball lasted for three days and that she wore three different dresses and shoes to attend the ball. Especially, because of the Rule of Three (Back then, a lot of stories follow/had the Rule of Three incorporated in them.).
I think that the old fairy tales are better mostly because they teach children morals like don't be vain or you'll cut off your feet 🤷
Didn't wanna be that guy, but, first!
This version of Cinderella is played out in both the stage and cinema versions of INTO THE WOODS.
In the adaptation of into the woods, they did a good one of it!
Yes
This man: "and it might keep you up all night too"
Me: *its 5:49AM and I've been awake for 2 hours, what could keep me awake?*
If Disney would do their movies by the ORIGINAL stories, the movies would be 'Adults only' 😱😱😱
I commented this 25 seconds into the video, so he probably already mentioned it but i remember seeing a movie when i was five about the original version of Cinderella where the step sister cut there heels of to fit into the shoe.
I remember it too but I can't find that version and I don't remember the name
In my opinion, the stepmother should have been punished as well, since she was nasty towards Cinderella as well. Same with dad for neglecting her
YES I WOOD LOVE TO SEE IT
Into The Wooda fallows the original story more and the Broadway production not the 2014 Disney adaptation of even Into The Wooda.
I’d like to see a Grimm version of this and other popular fairy tales. It would have to be geared towards more mature audiences. I would be curious to see that.
When you’ve watched into the woods so the chopping of the toe or heel isn’t new. 😂 sad to know about Cinderellas father tho.
There was a version by Charles Perrault. In this version, the father lives, but is to in love and scared of the stepmother to ever stand up for Cinderella. He even reprimanded her for complaining about her situation.
The Fairy Godmother actually gives Cinderella her self esteem. Since Cinderella doesn't even have one in the first place, because she is taught that her family's needs are more important.
This flim is amazing
Yes to the Grimms version!
Remake with a Brothers Grimm Version would be so cool
forgot one detail... the step mother was made to dance in red hot iron shoes until she died.
Actually that's the original ending of Snow white and the seven dwarves.
@@shabanakhan8202 really? i was always told it was the end of cinderella. time for me to go back to my books and rediscover the grimms ^-^
As a child i remembed reading a book were it had the real cinderella story and the only thing I remember from that book before this video is one of the stepsisters cutting off their big toe. I wasnt scared i was more of amazed when i read that part i dont know why though and after seeing the disney version i was confused on why i didnt see it now i know why
omg YESSS I LOVE HORRE!!!!!!!!!
Yeah i here this one already
I actually like the dark version better
I watched the original Cinderella in 2012
how greedy those girls to cut their toes to fit the shoes but the birds that take their eyes are super
Omg that was just dark O.O
Disney wants to be family friendly!!!
I want another one
i love it
so must
yes
In the version i grew up with the dress fell from a tree she planted in her mothers ashe that she had Been watering with her tears everyday
Yes please
Disney should do the Grimm version as a live action remake.
Yes
❤
I read the originals! I said "Oh my gosh, there is no fairy godmother!" I thought "what a jerk!" When I read about the father. I thought that the big bad wolf was a child molestor. These tales are scary! Watch Into the Woods.
The first Cinderella I heard of was the one that the step sister chopped her toe off and the other cut her hill off
Disney would sugar coat many of the classic fairytales
Well yeah to keep it kid friendly because Disney is basically for little kids.
How do I answer the last question...🤔 HELL NOOOOO!!!
Thank you! The Brothers Grimm versions ruin EVERYONE'S childhood
Did they REALLY need to get their eyes pecked out though?!
I did read this book when I was a kid (the original version of course)
