Grimm fairytales are so much better than the modern ones, sure they're really dark and most aren't quite as kid friendly, but I love that as you said there's a moral or lesson you can learn from each one.
old times were dark and brutal to live in, we shall never let our descendants forget about the cruelty and potential danger. to me, these stories are true and beautiful.
Actually fairy tales were quite dark stories not for children originally. The past was filled with hardships, unfairness, sickness/death, and not much hope for most people and fairy tales were dark and reflected that. The Grimm brothers actually collected these tales, tweaked them and made them for children. They were like the first Disney, if you will. In the original Rapunzel the question she asks to the enchantress is "Madame, why are my clothes so tight?" Which is referring to the prince getting her pregnant, meaning the price was coming by night after night having premarital relations. Thats why the witch falls into such a rage. The Grimm brothers changed this line, and although she does give birth to children in the story there is not so much an emphasis on how it happened. This was a very tame story compared to other tales. You should look into the real sleeping beauty!
Quite true, Sarah Boomer, fairy tales originated from folklore , adult stories that are thousands of years old. Which were allegories on the many different problems in life, from abusive parents, to poverty and ones relationship to god. In any case, fairy tales in general are not meant for children.
I've never known anyone whose hair grew that fast! But who am I to argue with your own experience? So I stand corrected. Maybe she was only 27 years old.
I knew a girl in school that had short almost shaved hair in first year and then grew it out to just above her knees by gcse, admittedly she was quite short and I don't think that is normal but honestly I could imagine her with Rapunzel hair now
Long time viewer, first time commenter. Just wanted to say I like your videos. I want to thank you for what you do: educating people. This is not a big thing on RUclips over the past 13 years, however I like that someone is taking the time to do so. These videos are informative and fun. I hope that more people actually enjoy watching these and learning from them. Thanks, again for what you do.
I'm German and in the versions I've read the plot was always quite shorter in time: The craving for the rapunzels of the witch neighbour caused the couple to directly go out to steal them and the witch's response is just as immediate. I don't remember how exactly the prince solved getting up the tower but it also was a quicker process and he actually rescues her only with the help of some magic nuts on the run away. Also Rapunzel was the only person with a name which I feel is common in German tales. The cast of Sleeping Beauty for example only contains thirteen fairies, royal parents, nameless staff, a strange weaving woman and Briar Rose.
Growing up in the 50's I heard the exact same story as you recounted here. Same for little Red Ring Hood, she was cut out of th4 wolf's body by the huntsman her and her grandmother. I don't recollect them watering down the fairy tales I learned in school very much if any.
I forget who wrote it but there was an illustrated children's book that had this device: one day the wife asked her husband to help her tighten her dress because she recently had trouble doing it on her own. The husband then knew his wife was pregnant. Later after Mr. Prince visited, Rapunzel asked the witch to help her tighten her dress. . .
Despite Rapunzel being one of the best known fairy tales I have to admit that I was not familiar with the whole story or at least a very much different version. The one I know definately did not include the garden and the herbs, the desert or Rapunzel becoming pregnant with the prince´s children, or him going blind. The one I know was much more simple with him simply rescueing her from the tower and killing the old woman.
A lot of what we think of as weird in old fairy tales was actually metaphoric imagery which made sense to people of the time, but becomes ridiculous when taken literally. So for example if Rapunzel's tears heal the prince from blindness, in the story it's just magic. But listeners might interpret that means "he saw her crying and he decided not to ignore her and his bastard children anymore and instead recognized them as legitimate heirs". There's lots of stuff like that all over fairy tales.
I am pretty sure less sanitised version of this tale gets through in some books, because I vaguely recall the version I read it was one that included the prince getting his eyes poked by thorns. It may not have included the twin children though, but I can't recall for sure. I suspect it was a Golden Book version of the story - Golden Books are a brand of cheap story books for children, often available in supermarkets, that tend to include a lot of the classic fairytales. The last time I really noticed them available I found one that was a story of a soldier who took a challenge to solve how his numerous daughters (I don't recall how many, it could be as few as 12 or up to 20) were wearing out their shoes every night. It was a good enough story that I bought it despite being in my 20s. A couple of years ago I also heard Golden Books had released a Grumpy Cat book, but I have never seen a copy in person. I faintly recall a thick Golden Books omnibus book that had several stories in it, but that was when I was a child and the book has been lost since then. The Rapunzel story may have been in it.
The worst Disney ever did, was ruining the original ending of the little mermaid. They took all the drama and lesson out of that story and made it generic.
I was always read the Grimm Tales instead of the child versions. I was a very strange child who loved horror. So it always surprises me whenever I hear any fairytale that doesn't go down a dark, twisted path.
This is one of my Favorite stories. Thank you for this beautiful version of this story!! The illustrations just dreamy, wow! True Love Never Dies! 💕💞 Twins how beautiful. My favorite is Sleeping Beauty with Briar 🌹
I was obsessed, as a child, with this story. I haven't heard or read it for years, though, and this is the same version I remember so thank you! To me Rapunzel is more disquieting than the likes of Hansel and Gretel. There's not much longevity to the plot but it's riddled with murky menace.
As much as I love Rapunzel, I couldn't help but chuckle at the ridiculousness of some of what happened: If the tower has no door or stairs, then how did the old woman get Rapunzel into the tower in the first place? How did Rapunzel not know someone else was coming up the tower when the Prince came? Does a young man weigh or sound anything like an old woman? Who helped Rapunzel deliver her babies and how did she survive the desert post-delivery? Where can I get that kind of insurance? So many questions. Lol
I saw Fairy Tale Theater with Shelly Duval. In her version of the Rapunzel, her mother brought her there as a child. While Rapunzel slept, she had dwarves brick up the entrance of the tower so the girl couldn't get through it. As for delivering her babies by herself, women have done that in times of extremis. Remember, women didn't always give birth in sterile hospital rooms in the past. Childbirth can be hazardous, even fatal, for women but not all women die from it.
as for how it depends on the version but I have heard two: One: she was a witch...so teleportation. Two: it had a door but she bricked it up...as for the babies: she was living in the desert so that means she was by an oasis of some sort. I like to think maybe she went into the water and had the babies that way. I heard there is a technique like that nowadays. Otherwise....very, very painfully.
I do prefer the original version where Rapunzel complains that her dress is too tight around her stomach, accidentally spilling the beans that she’s pregnant.
In the version I was told as a child they say "Rapunzel, let down your hair so that I may climb without a stair" I guessing rhyming was considered better for kids. :''D Also Rapunzel had twin babies which means the Prince did more than just talk to her when he visited. lol ;D
Can you do Bluebeard next or Donkey Cabbage next? I don't see any mention of those outside of the animated Grimm's Fairy Tales. Bluebeard is pretty dark and might be right up your alley since it revolves around a woman coming across her husband's grotesque secret and breaking her promise to him that she would stay away from a specific room.
Hello. Can you please explain to us the story of The Chronicles of Narnia. Id love to hear the whole explanation behind it. Thank you for awesome videos you make.
I know that fairy tale with the enchantress as a fairy. And she noticed that Rapunzel had a male visiter, because her dresses got to tight do to her being pregnant. But otherwise it was told to me pretty much like that.
If you do a video on Sleeping Beauty then you should do the version by Charles Perralut who wrote the original story, Little Briar Rose by the Brothers Grimm as its basically the same but doesn't have the ogress and children. Then you should discuss Talia, Sun and Moon Which Sleeping Beauty was based on but technically isn't the same story.
In the original, Rapunzel gets caught because Gothel discovers her pregnancy. In another I've read, Gothel discovers the silk Rapunzel hides under her skirt. And in the Barbie version, Gothel's pet weasel spies on her. They're all great, but personally the Barbie version's my fave, with the Disney version being a close 2nd.
They did not make them, they collected them. Most of these things come from folklore and myths that have some truth to it and were carried thorugh the centuries. They travelled through Germany to collect them.
In the 1812 original version, the woman craves "Rapunzel" the vegetable and her daughter is thusly named Rapunzel. You need to preserve original names in these retellings, they are of essential import.
In 2nd grade we had a English assignment, write a letter from one character to another. I chose the story of Rapunzel and wrote a note from Rapunzel to the evil witch who raised her. I informed Gothel that she would be served papers soon declaring her intent to sew (I was 7 and it was close enough to sue) her for imprisonment, the damage of cutting her hair, and throwing her into the desert when she KNEW Rapunzel was pregnant.
Hellbound Iscariot thanks for the recommendation 😄 Does he (?) have an awesome voice and accent like @Mythology & Fiction Explained though?😋 the knowledge is important of course but narration is also mmmwah 😘
Nah, Old Sultan was a dog that belonged to a farmer. The dog was very faithful to its owner but the farmer began to grow concern because the dog was getting old and was having a hard time keeping up. The cat overheard and told Old Sultan of the farmer's plans on taking out back and shooting him. So, Old Sultan made a deal with the wolf. The wolf kidnapped the farmer's son and Old Sultan chased after and beat the crap out of the wolf. The baby boy was given back to the farmer and his wife, Old Sultan was rewarded. The wolf wanted his rewards but Old Sultan misunderstood and beat the wolf up again. The wolf challenged Old Sultan to a duel.
Hellbound Iscariot whuuut? Sounds oddly/vaguely familiar though. I must've read so many fairy tales, myths and folk tales but it's always interesting to dig up "new" ones 😉
Grey World The witch cloned her to have a endless supply of 12 year old girls to lock in the Tower. Replacement Locks. The Prince had picked the last one.
Washing her hair had to be a nightmare.
afro curly girl
True
Smelling her hair would be worse.
ChiniWanders True
ChiWanders lol I'm surprised her locks didn't fall out from all that pulling from dame gothel
Or combing it :/

It’s kid friendly if anything it’s better for
Yeah thats true just a shame they are so short

😮😮
Is there a book collection of the original dark fairytales?
Finally proper respect toward the Grimm fairy tale classics, well done sir.
Hair 20 ells long? That's 75 feet. Most hair only grows 6-10 inches per year. Rapunzel was secretly 125 years old!
Marialla...i beg the differ..i grew my hair for three years and grew almost 8feet long
So maybe some can grow faster...so yea, there:-)
I've never known anyone whose hair grew that fast! But who am I to argue with your own experience? So I stand corrected. Maybe she was only 27 years old.

Let's not forget her hair has powers.
crazy smahs, in the original fairy tale her hair was just a long hair without any powers.
Awesome! More Grimm Fairy tales please!
they can get pretty brutal
how did rapunzel not start balding from all that tugging on her hair when people climb it
Rose Life maybe it was just magical
How many tried??
If it was constant pulling every day she'd be bald but I'm pretty sure Gothel visits her every few days
@@prefersoloing duhh
Did you not notice the hook around which the hair was weaved? Friction, my friends!

Love ❤️ this fairy 🧚♀️ tale version!
Yeaahhhh man more of the Grimm Tales plz. It would also be really cool if you covered cryptids and urban legends as well!!
this version was told to me when i was young and i enjoyed it
Yes! I really never get tired lf listening to fairy tales. And your voice is so soothing, i'd love to hear more!

John O ́neil You probably read the politically correct version! The original Grimm's Fairy tales were kind of Grim. Most ended badly.
raynaldo arlen k.eman Yeah that's German folklorists for you. These brothers wrote done these stories that were passed down orally.
As the video implied, a lot of fairy tales were moral lessons, often with some hard consequences included for edification of the listeners.
A lot of what we think of as weird in old fairy tales was actually metaphoric imagery which made sense to people of the time, but becomes ridiculous when taken literally. Among the altered Disney fairy tales, this has to be the story with the best ending prior to alteration. The others are truly grim, get it, grim?
How did they change it in Disney? This story is similar to the book I remember reading while in school and have never seen the Disney movie
The worst Disney ever did, was ruining the original ending of the little mermaid. They took all the drama and lesson out of that story and made it generic.

I do prefer the original version where Rapunzel complains that her dress is too tight around her stomach, accidentally spilling the beans that she’s pregnant.
That version does make her less of an idiot.

I read one version where she complains her dress is too tight instead the Dame was heavier than the prince.

Great video as always.
PS ~ if you're doing fairy tales now can you do Hansel and Gretel.
nice! even fairytales now!
The way you told it is actually identical to the way i heard this fairy tale the first time as a child.
Though it was minus the witch having a name.
I was definitely told this one when i was a small child/ baby
Great Job keep up
I love your voice of gothel
Am i the only one who grew up with this one?
Do more on Grimm brothers, nice work man.

Alexis Welsh haha I had the Barbie version and I loved it, everytime I hear the Rapunzel story I imagine it
People be climbing her hair.... I be yelling and dying when my siblings yeet me hair 🙂
I was told the original story as kid and yes I did pick up on the morals from
I like this channel.
The brothers Grimm had a fun time making fairy tales absolutely horrifying
They did not make them, they collected them. Most of these things come from folklore and myths that have some truth to it and were carried thorugh the centuries. They travelled through Germany to collect them.
and a video on queen mabb and more Egyptian gods!
Explain Kingdom Hearts, it is very confusing and convoluted but also interesting
May you do some Aztec or Mayan mythology if I may ask
In the 1812 original version, the woman craves "Rapunzel" the vegetable and her daughter is thusly named Rapunzel. You need to preserve original names in these retellings, they are of essential import.
Also love ❤️ this book 📖 version by Phillip Pullman!

Lol I honestly didn't think of this story that way. If anything, it might have taught me the benefits of long, gorgeous hair 😄😅

Can you consider The Cthullu Mythos?
The Tale also shows that Parents/Adopted Parents can be very cruel, selfish and vindictive when they are defied.
can you do a video on queen titanna and king Oberon!?
Savage! Rupunzel called her adoptive mother fat and more difficult to deal with than her secret beau, all in the same sentence!
I hope you plan on creating more brothers grim story themed videos!!
great video bro........
This story is 4,000 years old.
Ur great at reading storys lol
When did repunzel have kids in the story? There was no mention of sex so how’d that happen?
Also please do more of these!
I'd assume it happened during one of their meetings.
Mythology & Fiction Explained omygoodness hahaha
Grey World The witch cloned her to have a endless supply of 12 year old girls to lock in the Tower. Replacement Locks. The Prince had picked the last one.
Please do the little mermaid. :)
I know this is off topic but I have a question. Was Loki the only God in Norse mythology that could change shape
No never thought about it this way! Thx tho
Is the music from Adrian Von Zeigler?
Also, love your witch voice XD
pls next the sumerian myths. underrated stories, but great god depictions!
Could you do the little red riding hood? I love your videos anyway.
