    How to video:
    Sampling with the PPG Wave System from 1982.
    The video shows the sample analysis and programming of new wave and wavetables for the PPG wave 2.2 Synthesizer.
    The Waveterm is the heart of the legendary PPG system and based on an old german computer called Eltec Eurocom II with Motorola 6809 processor.

    The PPG wave 2.2 Synthesizer from the year 1982 is one of most fascinating synthesizers ever. You can find a lot demo videos, sound tutorials about the Wave and the Waveterm in the PPG wave playlist.

    Da wird man schon vom Zuschauen neidisch. Das wirkt auch heute noch beeindruckend, kein Wunder, wenn dann in den frühen 80ern so eine Maschine als geradezu mystisch daher kam. Die PPGs waren wirklich innovativ, aber auch eigenwillig ;-)

      Das PPG System war seiner Zeit weit voraus, aber es ebnete den Weg zur Samplingtechnologie die dann mit dem Emulator ihren Durchbruch erlangte. Trotzalledem setzten einige Produzenten wie Z.B. Trevor Horn das System sehr häufig in ihren Produktionen ein. Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Propaganda. Oder auch Robert Palmer.

      Jepp, obwohl es etwas vermessen ist, PPG als Wegbereiter des Sampling zu sehen, die Ehre gebührt dann doch eher dem Urvater Fairlight, dem EMU (immerhin schon 1981) und späteren, billigeren Samplern wie dem Mirage oder Akai. Wolfgang hatte viel mehr erkannt, dass a) Sampling das "neue, dollte Teil" ist und b) dieses mit seinen digitalen Oszillatoren auch möglich war ;-)

      Sampling war definitiv ein Verkaufsschlager. Letztendlich ging die Entwicklung dann sehr schnell

    This is just beautiful!!! Really.
    I can even imagine Keith Emerson playing this one on Karn Evil 9 mid 80's. Though, it would extend the playing time for another 30 mins to reach the intended sound. However... it is marvellous.

    used a wave 2.2 at MusicLand Paris (Francis Mandin shop and mixing studio) for our 3rd EP and mixing our 1st LP project. Frederik Rousseau was my mentor, then. Amazing machine even if, sadly, we never had the Waveterm!

    super klang!! lustigerweise erinnert mich der klang irgendwie an kraftwerk und art of noise, die aber beide - glaube ich - keinen ppg benutzt haben. auf jeden fall gewinnt ppg mit seiner professionellen laborgeräte-optik ;)

      Art of Noise haben das PPG System benutzt aber vorallem den Fairlight für Sampling. Trevor Horn hat das PPG system zumeist eingesetzt. Oder Robert Palmer. Ultravox....

    The UVI Waveterm library is a good source for those without the budget - but sadly lacks the editing features of the original.

    I think the PPG Waveterm and Fairlight CMI are the only devices I know of that use 8" floppy disks.

    Anything special needed to be done on the 2.2 to hear the sample properly? have the same setup and cannot read the sample yet. Just got the Waveterm working 2 weeks ago.

      load the factory program in the 2.2. program 80 is reserved for the communication with the Waveterm

    Other than the waveterm, fairlight + synclavier...were there others that were capable of 8-bit resynthesis in particular?
