- If you're into sawing, today is a day you won't likely soon forget. I'm touring a production facility that specializes in cutting the biggest logs to make the widest slabs of wood you've likely ever seen. Not only am I touring this facility as a guest but I'm also fortunate enough to be able to take a turn at operating the widest sawmill in Canada. This 8 foot wide behemoth is Canada's widest sawmill and allows for slabs to be made unlike anything you've seen before. This sawmill is quite the unit as you'll see in today's video as you can pretty much just sit back in the comfy chair and ride along with the sawmill. On today's video you'll also see a one of the largest wood-drying kilns I've ever seen in addition to a 3 story-high collection of slab wood that will make any wood enthusiast jealous. If you're wondering where all the biggest logs in Ontario Canada have gone, I can tell you with certainty that this place likely has some of them. Glad you're all here to join me.

Hey Sandy! Thank you for taking the time to come see us in Barrie. I was a welcome break from the day to day and I was able to geek out about stuff that most people wouldn't understand. Excellent job on the edit. We're about 2-3 weeks out from finishing the count of the logs. Let's see who's closest!
Sounds great CK! Thanks again for passing along the sawing expertise.
I thought my mill was big at 71 inches wide. Very impressive. The surfacer on the mill is a genius idea. I think I’ll be adding that upgrade to my mill later! Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
71 is sure a massive sawmill to me. Bet you can make some nice pieces with that
Beyond EPIC Thank you for the opportunity to see such an operation
Glad you came along Scott
Thank you for the fantastic tour. Great to see that process.
Thanks for coming along for the tour Jack
Thanks for taking us along Sandy. They have an impressive operation that I’m sure not to have ever seen were it not for you!
Glad to have ya along Frank
This was a really interesting video Sandy. I am impressed by the size of the operation they have there, and how friendly they were while showing you around. I would give 10 to 1 odds that this was the first time you got to "ride" a sawmill while cutting logs, and I think this is now one of my favorite videos of yours. Thanks for taking me along with you on the tour.
Hey Wallace! You’re absolutely right about riding the sawmill. I’m hooked
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate you coming along this morning
Wow this is a dream toy to have . Happy you shared your experience sandy with us . Always good to see you
Thanks Antoine! Happy to have ya along
Awesome tour! Thank you!
Right on thanks Steve
Thanks Sandy!I really like and appreciate these "away from home videos". They have been interesting.
Glad you're liking those Steven. I've got some more coming up
Awesome video Sandi! That is one massive Sawmill, thank you so much for sharing!👍🏻👍🏻
Sure was a fun time. Thanks James
That was a very impressive 96” mill, wow! You stayed longer in that kiln then I would have 😂 very impressed with that whole operation! Thanks for taking us along Sandy. Well you know where to get a job if you need one! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
I sure had a great time there. Was awesome to see the slabs.
Definitely a great way to start Saturday morning with a new Sawing with Sandy vid! Great job on this tour Sandy an appreciate the time you took to put this together for us. Quite a facility! And wow! The amount of inventory is just incredible!! Cool to see that it’s a one stop shop for supplies as you showed at the first 👍 That kiln was something to see as well! Happy that you got try out the big sawmill :). For the board-feet estimate, I’ll go with 749,000.. but that’s just a rough guess out of the hat lol. Anyways thanks again for having us along with you! Cheers Sandy! Take care!
Really glad you came along for the tour
Thank you!Great video!
Glad you came along
Good evening Sandy.
All I can say is WOW..
I have been around mills my entire life BUT all where Circular mills..
Never had the pleasure to be around a bandsaw mill.. Only at fairs..
I have a small building my dad built and it is made from one log..
38 inch boards.. It was so fun to build with boards that wide..😁
I am so impressed with there operation they have..
Thanks for sharing..
As always stay safe and always be kind..
Cheers..
Thanks for coming along on this one Gus!
One word, WOW
I hear ya Larry!
They are for sure into the live slab sawing and definitely have the equipment to do the job very well. I'm the same as you would love to have an operation even 1/10 this size. Thanks for the tour Sandy really did enjoy it!
It sure was impressive
Thanks for sharing that was a huge sawmill.
Always welcome Russell
Very cool stuff! thanks for taking us along! That wide sawmill is awesome.. I want one lol!
Haha me too
Just wow. Couldn’t imagine the thrill of sitting on that seat. Thanks for another journey.
Sure felt like a big machine!
What a fantastic Saw Mill Company, you did good on your 1st cut.
Thanks for that TJ
HOLLY COW Sandy. I could tell you were on Cloud 9.
What a great tour.
Thanks for sharing.
Mike M.
Had a great time there with the crew
Great tour.
Thanks for coming along for it
Thanks Sandy great video 😄
Happy to have ya along Donna
Great video that place is awesome !
Thanks for that! Was a treat for me for sure
Great content Sandy. Congratulations!
Thanks Tom! Glad you liked the video
Thanks and greetings from Finland. Lots of good information in your videos.👍
Thank you! Great to hear from you. Always wanted to visit Finland as I"m sure there's some great scenery. Was close by in Norway one time but maybe next time I"ll make it over to Finland
I would say 1.25 million BF in the pile ... Very impressive operation - a lot of pressure on the sawyer to get the best cuts. A saw like the wide cut one would make quarter sawing a breeze. Thanks for the video Sandy - really enjoyed watching.
I know what ya mean about the pressure. Can imagine the value sitting there
Enjoyed the video. Impressive operation.
Great to hear that Louis!
Awesome job bro loved watching that
Great to hear that!
Wow bet that gives more ideas, thanks for trip
Was an awesome trip for sure!
excellant video sandy.
Thanks Terry
Great video.
Thanks for that!
WOW
It was something!
Dope to see this. Eye opening
Thanks for watching!
Sludge holder, lol!
hahha
oooo I'm a bit green with envy.
I hear ya! Me too
I’m enjoying the travel’s
Great to hear Jeff. More coming up
That looks like a clean operation
Was pretty slick
I live 90 minutes from there and have not heard of them. Thanks 7 for the intro . Impressive. You are becoming a local celebrity Sandy . Thanks for the video
Glad you enjoyed the video. I didn’t know about it either until recently. Awesome spot
I'm 20 mins away, what's my excuse for not knowing about it?
Now thats a mill!!
Sure is!
Wow
It’s a monster
That is an impressive operation. I had no idea that bandsaw mills were made that wide as a factory model. I know the guy at Legacy Lumber/Canadian Woodworks had his big sawmill custom made and that one only cuts about 72" or so.
I had no idea either!
Thanks for the tour. I want to build one now but i can already cut 30" and no need for anything wider..... but it would be fun!
Sure would be!
hi nice walk around john
Thanks John
Sandy, very interesting video, thanks for sharing. Maybe you could add a seat to your mill with a peddle drive. Lol 😊
I certainly thought about it haha
Great video Sandy, I was interested to hear that they use the ripper 37 blades. I just received my first order of ripper 37 blades yesterday and just put one on the sawmill. Haven't actually cut anything yet but I have six 9ft red oak logs 19 inch diameter that I plan on starting today. Hopefully I will be impressed with the ripper 37 7degree blades.
I haven't tried them either. I hear good things but I"ve been sticking with what I know so far. Thanks for watching Bill
All I can think to say is WOW!! What a grand operation! Look at where being a RUclips star gets ya!🤩Pretty neat! How did this field trip all come about? This goes into my top 3 Sawing with Sandy videos! 🏅Thank you for sharing this with us! 👍✌👋
PS I'm not sure how to come up with that big number....but my very random guess is 925k.
Hey Jill. CK is a long SWS viewer and he got in touch with me. Very fortunate to hear from him as he’s an expert Sawyer
@@sawingwithsandy Nice guy. Seems like a regular Joe like you.
That is amazing!!!! That log looks so tiny compared to the mill.
Sure was a monster of a sawmill!
Fun to watch video!!
Two lifetimes of milling board ft on my Woodland Mills saw is my guess.
You’ve got that right!
Good afternoon Sandy that was interesting I do have a guy that I watch he got a 72 inches but electric now after seeing the type of wood they were doing you can understand now more what I was talking about by me cutting more artistic wood than lumber artistic wood market is smaller but now you can try some of your ugly logs and make you some banches or coffee table but to do that you need somewhat of a wood shop thanks for sharing this wood cutting experience with the people it is going to help a lots of people understand what artistic cuts are have a great day
Absolutely was a big eye opener for me
Hey sandy, thanks for the tour. I just completed my first saw using a woodland mills 122. No expectations but to learn, I had some troubles once the log was smaller and keeping it square. Any tips?
Glad you liked the video. Big thing is to ensure your log stops is square to the log bunk. There’s some bolts that you can use if the log stops needs slight adjustment
Very impressive operation from the raw material to the final product. I had no idea of a company like MetalWood Studio in Barrie producing such high volume milled products. Very cool massive mills for those huge logs. Where are they sourcing the massive logs from? Very interesting stickers. Thanks for sharing.
I didn’t know either. They say they get their logs from various sources including a lot of local trees
That's pretty close to where I live. Just passed through on my way to North Bay yesterday and heading back Wednesday
Nice area for sure Albert.
G'day Sandy, I played one game of Australian rules football in Canada for the Mississauga Mustangs back in 92 and we played against the Barry Hawks , anyway thanks for showing that set up very impressive 👍🇦🇺.
Hope you enjoyed your trip when you visited! Glad you enjoyed the tour
My wife is from Toronto I've been there many times I preference the summer 👍.
Hi Sandy, check out Clarke Sawmills from Lindsay Ontario, they have the seat to ride along also. Heavy duty sawmills!
Hey Wron! I’ve heard of them before . Will have to check them out. Thanks for watching
95k in that log pile. hard to tell from the video of real size. thats a big mill! I thought canadian woodworks was big at 72" wide
You’ve got a solid bit of experience for sure Kev so 950k may be a good guess
Hello Sandy. What a tour! Even with my screen maximized, I could not tell if they use a laser on the big mill. Do they? Have good days!
We actually got the laser when I saw the first video Sandy did on his laser. We use it to gauge the straightness of the cut more so than lining up the blade precut but it's been invaluable nonetheless.
Hey Buddy, CK Armstrong here is the CK from the tour.
really nice video. really nice slab mill. and every thing. i think a LT 70 fully load wood mizer is $90,000 or more now. take care, be safe and well.
Is that right. I sure wouldn't mind giving one of those a sprin. Glad you liked the video John.
When CK indicated he milled outdoors for the first winter, I cringed, Being a resident of the “Ontario Snow Belt” I couldn’t imagine working outside unprotected from the elements all winter. One could spend the first half of their day moving snow from the night before.
Amazing the simplicity of the slabbing mill. Initially I would have guessed the mill would have been electric power considering it’s a stationary mill . I really like the hydraulic drive.
Good to see the Woodmizer operator wearing a respirator.
I hear ya there! Barrie gets a tonne of snow
I'd like to know where those stickers come too.or how to make a bunch.nice video buddy.
I think the Channel groove stickers could be made on a router but not sure where they can be purchased
Economy of scale !Wow! Interesting.... I'll happily stick with my 30" slab HM130max 😂
Sure is a monster!
Funny story, I just got my Woodland mills HM126 (sound familiar?). Just after I got it I went to a festival sponsored by Woodmizer. That was an interesting conversation. They of course wanted to up sell their product, but I kind of cut them short when I pointed out that my mill arrived in 3 weeks, and theirs on average was 18 months. Kind of hard to sell, yea our product is great, the one you want is only 70,000$, and HEY, you get to salivate for a year and a half before you get it. SOOOO big question, I have been watching your channel because you use woodland mills, are you going to upgrade soon? Because there are a LOT of channels showing the WM lt40 HD.
Great question. The long waits wouldn’t be fun when you’re waiting on something like a sawmill I can imagine. I don’t have any plans to upgrade as the Woodland Mills is quite capable I’m finding and doing everything I need it to
Extremely interesting but I couldn't hear much of the sawmill tour, EVERYONE needs a mic, you also Sandy! Do it!
Glad you liked the video. Hopefully before long I can get some microphones
Please tell me you bought that slab you cut for a keepsake of your experience lol that would be cool.
I probably should've in hindsight haha. It would've had to go through the kiln process and all that there first I suppose
Sandy if I win the lottery big time I'll buy one for you BUT you have to fine the logs!!!
hahah ok thanks Tony
My first stop bye the channel. One question would ingage belts before the high R.P.M? Be a nicer ingage the high and then hi gh speed . My way we all do
Great to have ya here Ronald
Ronald, because of the sheer mass of the band wheels the rpm needs to be high to avoid stalling.
Sandy what is the solution they use for cooling I only could get 50 50 ?
Hey Marc. They use 50/50 pinesol and water
@@sawingwithsandy thanks Sandy! I have had great success with just water but don't mill in the winter as we have a lot of snow here! and I haven't a shack yet! Maybe soon...
When he said “150 degrees” in the Kiln, I was thinking that was hot, but then they walked in and I realised he meant 150f! Canada must still be mostly Imperial in it’s measurement system.
Canada is metric with some industries using imperial system as a common unit ex. Lumber industry
They must find lots of metal in those old logs ? Or do they have a xray machine of sorts
Good question I’m not too sure
Lots of metal for sure! It's rare that we get anything more than 40" without any metal in it. When that happens we need to weigh the value of the slabs against the cost of a blade or time to sharpen it. Sometimes we try and cut around it, sometimes go right through. We have a wand that we use after every cut if metal is suspected. That way we get a good idea of how that slab would be valued and make an educated decision.
@@secondedgeblades thanks very informative.
would like to see 1 of those on your mill.
Hahah
@@sawingwithsandy imagine slabbing with a chainsaw and a beam guide.
I think Matthew Cremona's home-built saw cuts faster and larger slabs
I’m not too familiar with that sawmill. I’ll check it out
Matthew's saw is 76" (this one is 96") and shorter by about 10' but still very impressive for a home build!
No mention of scanning for metal before milling.
I’m not too sure what their my protocol is on that. I’d imagine they do
Important recommendation, use clip on mics that feed WiFi to your camera, no ambiguity in the audio!
Thanks for passing that along!
6 weeks in that kiln? What’s their electric bill?
I'd imagine it would be pricey!
you think that's big? I've read about one mill on Vancouver Island that a 14ft vertical bandsaw for a headsaw. BC also has some other record mills. Canfor Houston is the biggest sawmill in the world in terms of board feet cut per day. In the Westbank Museum there is a 1:12 scale jack chain sawmill with Headsaw, Resaw and edger.
Yeah I bet there’s some big saws around. I haven’t heard about the one in Vancouver Island though. I’ll have to look into that
You should have showed us the turning of the log ??
Don’t think they were planning on any at that moment
We use the telehandler to flip the log. We put down bunks and roll it away from the mill then replace it back on. Sometimes because of the weight of the wood there's no need to flip it.
My guess on board feet is 1 million 100 thousand board feet. That is a lot of cutting.
Sounds good to me. CK is going to pass along the final number soon I believe and I"ll post it for everyone to find out
1.25m board feet
Hard to even imagine that amount of lumber eh.
Why does it have 2 heads ?
The second head is for smoothing the cut surface if I'm not mistaken
You're right Sandy, the second head is a planer/sanding head. Anything that is too wide for the inside planer comes out to be finished on the big mill.
A rough guess of five million feet, would of been more but so much odd size and waste
Sure seems like that's entirely possible
888,888 board feet in that pile is my guess.
Hard to say eh Ray
@@sawingwithsandy Can you imagine hitting trap steel with that honking huge blade? 😭
1 mbf
Surely there’s a lot eh
850k bf in pile
I’m not even sure what to guess
Widest not for long .😉
hahah
@sawingwithsandy I will be posting on a new channel the build along with other projects .
Here is the kicker. I will do it for under 5K canadian dollars.
And show my viewers how I did it for that cost
475,000 bf
Sounds like a good guess to me
You didn't complete the WOW factor, all you did was show the WHY factor, why 8' wide when the is no tree that wide in Canada......................
With trees often having some curvature and branching near the base it ends up needing that width to get the unique slab pieces
There are trees on the west coast of Canada with 8’ diametre and larger
I am India.i need job . 1 year without salary
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope things work out for you. Thank you for tuning in for the video tour
ITS A 1 STOP CHOP !!!!!!!! LOL
Hahah
1.75mill ft.
I don’t even know what I’d guess
