It’s crazy I just had this conversation with my barber yesterday. He told me to cut my hair against the grain with a 4 because my hair grows in so many different directions.
Same. Mainly on the front of my hairline and my right edge. Half of my hairline grows going to the right an I have a cowlick on the right corner. The right edge also grows to the right, the rest just grows down normally, shits annoying lol

I'm all for cutting against the grain but you MUST check to see if there is a receding hairline first. Do so by lifting the hairline to check its pattern. Otherwise you can definitely ruin that client's hairline for a long time. Especially if their hair grows slow.

Just sayn, the hairline pattern should be acknowledged before starting. Not knocking vid, Jeezy's one of the greatest 🙏🏽 but sometimes the best barbers forget to mention certain details. That's where comments come in handy.

Against the grain is really the only way I cut waves... An overall cleaner and more uniformed cut. Clients look crazy until they see the results then it makes sense. I start with a much larger guard then go with the grain for smooth clean up and to lay down any "ant legs". Been doing that for years...

Against the grain cuts = (all around even cut) hair cut looks okay but doesn’t look that good. Ever day after you wash it and brush it and keep it moisturized it starts looking better and better and better.
