Hi James Just heads up the T junction was facing the wrong way going in pumping station. So the to tell imagine how the water will flow down pipe. Doing cracking job keep up the good work
James, I’ve been a builder for 30 years. I’m worried about your fish waste and muck going into the soak away. Where will that go? I get the water runs through the ground but that will leave the muck inside the soak away like. Coffee grinds in a filter paper. Eventually fill up and back up through the pipes. Guess this was what has happening from the epic. Also you don’t have purge bypass on your dry fit bottom drains. Watch Adam julians video he did the other week on bypass. Nice neat work though looking forward to the rest of the project.
Love these vids, totally routing for you James! Wondering if it might be worth building a soak away just for pond towards the end of your garden? That’s rotten that issue. I’d have though it went to the sewer too. Really hoping it works out ok 👍
with that clay soil it will take for ever to soak away you should make a soak away as far away from your house as it will under mine your con good look
James I’m a drainage engineer, u need to put in crates and as others have said it needs to be 5m away from ur house, if u need the pipework jetting out I could pop past on way home from work, I go past collumpton most days
Cracking work James. Hope you get sorted with that drainage. What a nightmare How many gallons you going to be holding in the new pond? Can’t wait to see the finish. Great work so far mate 👍🏻
James mate first of all sod the people who say anything negative and criticise what you are doing. You are doing a great job 👏🏼👍🏼 Second and more importantly that drain situation. Instead of creating a large soakaway for pond and rainwater from the roof just create a smaller one for roof rainwater only. Then make another for the pond water away from the house as you don't want a soakaway anywhere near your house ideally especially with the amount of water and crap that the pond will produce. If you are unsure what im saying i can pass you my number and explain better over the phone. All the best pal 👍🏼👌🏼
Wait untill you see my next few videos mate mondays and will explain midweek as well As this weekend I have shorted out the problem but still need to push out the content
@@JamesTHEKOIwhisperer123 after reading some of the comments i can see that your plans are on the right track and all is good 👍🏼 I'd offer to give you a hand but there is a small matter of 350 miles between us 🤣 Take care mate 👍🏼
I wasn’t planning on rebuilding my pond but one of the walls collapsed this past week - was a 9” concrete block wall as well. I like your idea of putting the bottom drains either side of the window. What size hole cutter do you need? I have many (I’m a plumber in Ottery).
James great video as always, soak away needs to be a certain distance from your property, last thing you need is your pond base or your house foundation failing.
James I hope I'm wrong but as far as us koi keepers know, any pond waste needs to go directly to waste and not a soak away. Please ask any one with a soak away. I don't know of the soak away issues but water changes need to go directly to waste as i understand. I do wish you the best of luck mate. Stay positive as always, usually there is always a positive outcome. Hope you sort your issue buddy. 👍
i really would get a professional opinion on that soak away, if you run into issues once the pond base is in and it starts to wash away underneath you could be in a world of trouble, 5 ft of water would be enough to crack it, better to be safe than sorry
I know you’ve already sorted this issue out but I wouldn’t use a soak away if possible. I’ve two at my place and a cess pit and the only good thing is, I don’t pay a full water bill.
You need to be very careful James. You have undermined your conservatory 😳. I am not sure a soakaway will work as it looks like you are in clay which will hold the water, ie your soakaway won't soakaway. You might be better putting your pump station at the house end and putting some drainage at the bottom of your garden. Plus you will need to filter the waste water, the soakaway will clog over time if you put waste into as the waste has nowhere to go, just like your current clay drain. Good luck 👍
If you have a soak aways on your property then the water board may owe you alot of money, as they charge you % every year to take your rain water away as its not connected to the sewer. So check your bill as you could be due a massive rebate :)
James i know you are on of top of the drain problem as we talked last night on placement of the soakaway i don't want to give anything away hear you are on the ball putting it where you told me last night and the dirt trap is a must and i know you are up to speed on sorting this the right way mate proper job you will have that dream pond 👍👍👍👍 see you some point over next week end i will bell you
Really any advice we give is too late lol because your videos are a week behind. But I was gonna say forget putting that soakaway near the pond or conservatory. Just start again from scratch run a new plastic 100mm pipe from your down pipe on the house 90° to get you in between the pond and conservatory and head for the opposite side of your garden away from everything dig a 1.5 x1.5m hole for a soakaway. Buy the proper soakaway crates don't forget to wrap them in Terram Then get a refund for your waste pumping system. And just run a pipe from your filter house to the new soak away in the middle of your garden. 👍
Mate if I get stuck stuck I will deffo be asking and yea 100% all over this new pond build mate I been planning it for years but didn’t realise I had this little hic hic up but it’s shorted this weekend mate
Don't listen to the comment keyboard warriors. You building your dream and we are enjoying the entertainment. It is a great little channel and we are all supporting your build. If you built an acre wide pond with all the trim, there would be people saying it is too small. I bet they never built a pond in their life. tell them to go "cluck" themselves and Happy happy days!
Yeah mate you can’t put a soak away less then 5 meters away from the house where I’m from in Essex check with your local building control they should be able to tell you
Hi mate, It has probably been said, but that soak away is a bigger problem than your thinking. Especially if it's in clay as that's what it looks like to me. I would seek professional advice as to what you can do mate. You don't want problems further down the line. Terry.
James, along the back of most old houses would run a 9 or 12 inch clay pipe (runs along through everyone's gardens)and then a 4 inch clay runs from the house into that larger pipe to take all the rain water. Sewer normally goes front of the house. My guess is when the conservatory was built the builders broke or disturbed that 4 inch clay pipe doing the footings. I wouldn't put pond waste into a soakaway and certainly not one that small as if you have any heavy rain storms is would be very quickly overwhelmed and could do more damage than you think. Maybe get a drain bloke with a camera and see if you cam go down one of you neighbours pipes to find the where it runs and try to locate that bigger pipe. All the best, that is a bummer especially as you took the effort of putting the sump in. PS, don't undermine that footing too much other wise is could crack.
Interesting watch as always this pond is gonna be epic but 2 things....... how are your fish? And I not a fan of the ads that I can't skip im I'm in a hurry
I’m not sure who told u the pond is pretty much the same size as the old one.. 🤔 I disagree... I seen where u laid the string lines which added more space (maybe not a lot but definitely more and u have been digging it deeper.. I think your doing an AMAZING JOB!! I’m absolutely jealous! Keep up the amazing work!
hi bud , ive sort of same system for waste ,blue barrel and a waste sump pump this pumps through 1 1/2" pipe to main drain over 100 feet away works a treat . i wouldnt like to think i was pumping to a soak away bearing in mind ya be flushing bottom drains , muck , poop and so on into it. You got water pipe to ya back garden is there no way to get a pipe to front for waste? keep up the good work
Great vid but you really need professional advice that soak away will cause you a massive issue further down the line. Personally I would try to send pond water down the sewage pipe. Too much water volume for a standard soak away plus all the fish poo. Added to by being next to the house. You will have to take down the pond to fix in years to come when it’s washed away your foundations. Get it right now good luck buddy you will sort it. 🙂
Hi James, I have been watching with interest that is bit of a problem that bloody drain what bad luck! never mind there's always an answer! Have you thought about getting a specialist firm in to Mole a hole under your house to the front where you could connect to your combined Foul/Rainwater Drains? (like a Directional Drilling company) these people can mole up to 150mm diameter holes easily 40 to 50 meters length you won't need that much, so in your case go for a 60mm Dia hole and then push through your 2inch grey pressure pipe. I don't know how much this would cost but it might be worth enquiring as it will get you out of jail mate! Your supper duper pumping chamber would then evacuate to a proper drain and bingo end of problem! Other people are right about the soakaway being minimum 5 meters from any building! This is Building Regulations I am an Architectural Designer so I know that is the case. Good Luck with what ever you end up doing!! You will get there!
Keep going James! Bit of a choker on the drainage front but better to find it and sort it now and - as you say - one job at a time and you’ll smash it! 💪🏻💪🏻 It’s going to be an amazing pond!
If your soil has a high content of clay, soak aways will not work that well. The water can’t really drain through the clay and will sit there eroding your pond and conservatory foundations. Is there an actual drain or man hole in the back you can use? I just send my waste into the neighbours garden.
Oh mate, that soak away is a real kick in the nuts, you can’t realistically send your waste to a soak away of any size because it’ll just clog up in time and stop working plus as mentioned it needs to be a minimum 3 mtrs from the property, that’s a nightmare! One thing your definitely going to have to do is tank your pond with visqueen, I.e lay a membrane down to go under your concrete base and lap up the outside of your blockwork to above ground level, if you don’t every time it rains it’ll seep into the bottom of the pond and your concrete and blockwork will never dry out, my ponds very similar and even with the recent dry spell we’ve had it took eight weeks to dry out before I could get it fibreglased! I wish I could help but I’m 250 mile away but that is a total rethink job, even that soak just for the top water from the down pipe will cause you problems. Very difficult only seeing it on the vids but the only way I can see to do it, is have your collection tank and pump the other end to take both the top water and pond waste and pump it out the back or a least put the soak away that end so if it sees to much water than it can handle at least it’ll run away from the property and pond
James a soakaway should be a min of 5metres away from any building. Please dont put it where you are going too will end up giving you meager problems later in life. Keep up the good work
James the soak away needs to be at least 5meters from the house. That’s what building regs say, personally I would not put fish waste into a soak away. You’ll end up with problems.
Put a soak away near your back gate in yard , if you put a 4 inch pipe from your chamber that’s sunken to your soak away on a decline then you wouldn’t even need to pump it , gravity will take it away , that’s how I have done mine, could of saved ya self £800 too 🤔
Do your rain water pipes go to that soakaway? Dont bother with the soakaway for the pond waste Put the pond waste into the pump. Then pump the water to the front of the house down the side if you can
Mate that soak away is going to cause you trouble as the koi waste builds up and forms a layer that will not let the water drain also the smell will be unbearablejust saying from experience good luck from Australia
Couple of things were you putting your drain on out side of filter house make sure it can’t feed back to the drain in side filter house Surprised you not noticed any damp in conservatory with that pipe gone will be who ever put conservatory in who smashed when done the base footings I would of thought Be careful that don’t do next doors soak away too Done well though mate Pm if wish or get me on my Facebook Kev
Soakaway needs to be away from foundations , get it to back of garden , sorry mate for the extra work , a soakaway is only as good as the grounds its in ..
James STOP, The regulations state that a rainwater soakaway must be located at least five metres from the wall of a building and at least two and a half metres from a boundary. YOU WILL RISK YOUR HOUSE SUBSIDING , you might be be lucky if you can put the soakaway as up near where you want to put your filter house ,
Lewis totally agree! i'm guessing that the foul water common sewer runs under the conservatory. not the news anyone wants to hear and would be a pig of a job to do but the right thing to do, but not impossible. again i think James is doing a great job and want him to have a successful pond without causing an issue down the line
James you really need to extend that soak away pipe through your pond and into your back garden. I know it is more work but that soakaway was built before your conservatory it needs to be away from your house otherwise it will keep washing your foundations away

James I’m a drainage engineer, u need to put in crates and as others have said it needs to be 5m away from ur house, if u need the pipework jetting out I could pop past on way home from work, I go past collumpton most days
Thanks on the offer mate
Cracking work James. Hope you get sorted with that drainage. What a nightmare
How many gallons you going to be holding in the new pond? Can’t wait to see the finish. Great work so far mate 👍🏻
James mate first of all sod the people who say anything negative and criticise what you are doing. You are doing a great job 👏🏼👍🏼
Second and more importantly that drain situation.
Wait untill you see my next few videos mate mondays and will explain midweek as well
As this weekend I have shorted out the problem but still need to push out the content
@@JamesTHEKOIwhisperer123 after reading some of the comments i can see that your plans are on the right track and all is good 👍🏼
I'd offer to give you a hand but there is a small matter of 350 miles between us 🤣
Take care mate 👍🏼
@@Tom_Prendiville could set up the camp bed lol 😂
@@JamesTHEKOIwhisperer123 fishing bivvy in the garden 🤣🤣👍🏼
I wasn’t planning on rebuilding my pond but one of the walls collapsed this past week - was a 9” concrete block wall as well. I like your idea of putting the bottom drains either side of the window. What size hole cutter do you need? I have many (I’m a plumber in Ottery).
James great video as always, soak away needs to be a certain distance from your property, last thing you need is your pond base or your house foundation failing.
100%
James, can you not tie the soak away to a drain at front of house and pump waste to front too
James I hope I'm wrong but as far as us koi keepers know, any pond waste needs to go directly to waste and not a soak away.
👍👍👍
None return valve for your waste water?
100% on that mate
Wait untill you see me next few videos all in the pipe line
Terry.
Yea mate I am on it
James, along the back of most old houses would run a 9 or 12 inch clay pipe (runs along through everyone's gardens)and then a 4 inch clay runs from the house into that larger pipe to take all the rain water.
You got water pipe to ya back garden is there no way to get a pipe to front for waste? keep up the good work
Sediment chamber is the way to go I got one of them as well
Great vid but you really need professional advice that soak away will cause you a massive issue further down the line.
So are you saying the rain water from your roof just goes to a soak away. ?
Some houses do, my old house all the rear rwp went to a soakaway
My new house only has one rwp, that goes under the garage out to the street
James a soakaway should be a min of 5metres away from any building. Please dont put it where you are going too will end up giving you meager problems later in life. Keep up the good work
Also really it should go down till you hit a sand layer.. it should have 600mm of cover over the top in the ideal world
I agree with Mark James can your water board not fit this for you 🙏🐟🐟🐟🙏
James the soak away needs to be at least 5meters from the house.
Dont bother with the soakaway for the pond waste
Put the pond waste into the pump. Then pump the water to the front of the house down the side if you can
I can’t there is a house either side no chance in that
Mate that soak away is going to cause you trouble as the koi waste builds up and forms a layer that will not let the water drain also the smell will be unbearablejust saying from experience good luck from Australia
Couple of things were you putting your drain on out side of filter house make sure it can’t feed back to the drain in side filter house
Surprised you not noticed any damp in conservatory with that pipe gone will be who ever put conservatory in who smashed when done the base footings I would of thought
Be careful that don’t do next doors soak away too
Done well though mate
Pm if wish or get me on my Facebook
Kev
You look burnt out James, get yourself some rest. How the koi doing?
No time to rest I need to keep pushing on
And yea there are doing ok mate
Soakaway needs to be away from foundations , get it to back of garden , sorry mate for the extra work , a soakaway is only as good as the grounds its in ..
Get a drain survey done a soakaway is never that close to a building
James STOP, The regulations state that a rainwater soakaway must be located at least five metres from the wall of a building and at least two and a half metres from a boundary. YOU WILL RISK YOUR HOUSE SUBSIDING , you might be be lucky if you can put the soakaway as up near where you want to put your filter house ,
All ready on the ball mate but I make videos and content and show you lot along the way wait and see what I have done it’s brilliant
Just get professional advice James on that soak away
You need to run your waste water to the foul manhole and move your Soak away from the house
Lewis totally agree! i'm guessing that the foul water common sewer runs under the conservatory. not the news anyone wants to hear and would be a pig of a job to do but the right thing to do, but not impossible. again i think James is doing a great job and want him to have a successful pond without causing an issue down the line
