  • Received directly from the filmer so many years ago here is his film of marillion live at sheffield city hall which was the bands last gig in england before the split with fish. I was at this gig myself so hopefully you all will enjoy it

      Yes very special live band with fish I saw them from 1983 to 88 but my 1 regret is not going to see them more , sorry to hear you never got to see them live with fish

      Me too! Going from the angle, the filmer must have been not far from where I was sitting on the balcony. Cine-cameras were pretty big back then so I've no idea how he got that past security.
      Sheffield City Hall security were awful thugs back then. They'd rush in and drag people out in headlocks at the slightest excuse. I remember one tubby bloke with a moustache and curly mullet who was a total nazi. I seem to recall that Stuart Adamson once stopped a song to have a go at the team for how they were treating the fans.

      Yes I agree I was about in the middle of the stalls I saw 6 shows on that tour Wembley twice Birmingham Manchester st Austell Sheffield brilliant time as a 23 year old

    Met the entire band as a 10 year old boy at Aylesbury civic centre in 1987, have met the big man many times since at his solo gigs, but the one thing i regret is not being able to see them in 82/83 when they were playing script and fugazi. If time machines are ever invented in my lifetime, it will be my first stop

    Those were great days, first saw them in 82 with Tull at Nostell priory, and many times after that, great band.

    Nothing beats a great band playing live. Remarkable to think they were barely on speaking terms at this point in the tour. Neither parties ever quite reached these heights after the piscine one left.

    Was there in the January, when the show had to be cancelled with the Hall already full, was worth the wait though till the February.

      I was not surprised the January gig was cancelled as went the night before in Manchester & fish seemed to be struggling but what a gig it was & fantastic it was caught on film

      Very true I went to st Austell to see them the Friday before & into the night club which was next door to the venue & had the worse hangover I’ve ever had the next morning 🤣

      Thanks I knew the guy who filmed Sheffield but it was bumping into him at the fish gig in late 89 in Sheffield I ask him about it & from memory he had not done anyone a copy & said he was happy with the result & days later it arrived in the post & when I was watching it I thought wow he as filmed it very well & some years later my vhs tape was sent to the guy duley digital who mastered the tape onto dvd & yes it’s a excellent film & I went to this gig too so it’s a special memory for me , I will be uploading more of my Marillion concert DVDs in the near future

      @@leedsguy41 I was very involved with other Marillion freaks down in Germany & Holland (I live in Gothenburg, Sweden) during the Fish era. It`s fun to see that some of you guys keep it up! Kudos!
      I lost my collection due to a fire in mi flat in 97, but some of mi Yes stuff was saved.
      Well, I still got mi memories 😄

      Your very welcome I got this video from the filmer 18 month later it’s been in the hands of collectors for a few years but many fans like yourself did not know it existed, I was at the non performance gig too that was cancelled but was not surprised it was cancelled as I went to the Manchester gig the night before & fish seemed to be struggling with his voice

      @@leedsguy41 @leedsguy41 There was a coach load of us from Hull at that first gig, so we ended up in a pub local to City Hall that had a dj on that night, who played every Marillion track he had, so the night wasn't a total waste for us 😅

      @@suestgeorge1782 I went on a coach from Leeds & the driver told us he could not set off back until 10.30 so myself & my 2 mates went back to the pub but unfortunately it was not the pub that you was in with the dj playing Marillion, there was great days back then I went to see them 6 times on that tour happy days

    @leedsguy I've just come across this.... thanks a million for putting this on. I was at this gig.. the original was cancelled due to Fish lost his voice i believe. you say you was at this gig so can please put me out of my misery. Can you remember a guy getting up on stage with fish.... i know it doesn't show it on your recording but a guy got up on stage that night... and that guy was me..! I came with a coach load from Hull. Its also weird coz my favourite song was and still is The Last Straw and i said to the guys who i was with, if they play it chuck me on stage. looking through this recording no Last straw and looking on the set list again no the last straw, but i definitely got up on stage. If you can help or any one else. Thanks again. Carl

      You can’t have watched the full gig because I do remember a young lad getting up onto stage & hugging fish so you are on it my friend, i was not surprised when the original gig was cancelled as I saw them the night before in Manchester & fish seemed to be struggling, I went by coach too from Leeds brilliant gig & tour

    I was stood at the front opposite Steve rotheray. There was a bloke next to me shouting for Grendel to be played. Sadly my knowledge of the early stuff was poor and I wondered what he was talking about. I now wish they had played it, that would have been amazing

      @@Warren-g2b all 4 albums was very good with fish misplaced was the hardest album for me to get into but is a classic my big regret is not going to see them more in the early days & didn’t see them until the script tour saying that I went to 6 shows on that last tour happy days my friend there was & still are a very special band

      @@Warren-g2b well I can’t knock you at least you have tried with Hogarth mabe u just don’t like him singing the old stuff or just don’t like his vocals, my big regret is missing seeing them at the nec dec 85 as I left it to a week before in getting ticket with travel & there sold out but went in 87 at that venue sat about 6 rows from the front brilliant gig, if your looking for any recordings I’ve got quite a decent collection

    @leedsguy, Saw this tour in november 1987, in Copenhagen. As I remember, they had Tessa Niles as backing vocals. Any reason why she's not on the UK leg of the tour? I thought she added a nice sound to the proceedings.

      There was another woman singing as backing vocalist in the early part of the tour including the gig I saw in Birmingham dec87 but there went back to 5 from January 88, great tour as I went to 6 gigs including Sheffield the last gig fish did with the band in England

    I know we all get old but when i watch Fish on Fridays i still cant relate that he was the same Fish that fronted Marillion ,still thats just me ! I guess

      35 years ago is a long time fish as not had a good singing volce for over 25 years but that’s my opinion he sings in a much lower key

    Was this the one that was rescheduled from December 1987?
    I remember being at the City Hall when Fish came out and personally apologised for cancelling the gig so late due to having a throat infection. You could tell he felt really bad and he'd tried to keep to make sure he could deliver until he realised he just couldn't do it. He was so remorseful but he sounded really croaky.
    He's obviously in fine voice here so he made the right decision to wait until he could sing in a way that would please the fans.

      @@leedsguy41 Hi. Yes, I seem to remember the big guy saying something like "I'm sorry but my throat's totally fucked up". Didn't he need some vocal chord polyps removed some time after that?
      It's fantastic to stumble across this 36 years later and relive such a joyous time. Never expected to see it again.
      I was 15 and it was my second ever gig, the other one being Big Country at the Sheffield Octagon, December 5th '87. I attended both with my best mate from school and we were the only people either of us knew at the time who liked that music.
      I seem to remember paying £17.50 for the ticket which was a fair bit of paper round dosh! A steal at the price though, even back then.
      Thanks again and please pass on my thanks to Steve the filmer. How did he get a 1988 video camera the size of a shoe box past the City Hall Stasi? 😄

      @@NicholasBerry-ku9rd your very welcome yes I know what you mean it’s always nice to find a gig on film so many years later as more are been uploaded, fish did have problems with his throat in them days & there cancelled some shows in 1985 on the misplaced childhood tour a week before I was due to see them in Manchester & it was rescheduled for January/86, unfortunately I’ve not seen steve the filmer since buying a copy from him in 1989 when I bumped into him in Sheffield before the fish gig at the octagon, I knew he filmed the gig some 18 months before but then he decided he wasn’t going to sell copies of it so that meeting I got into his ribs & we agreed a price & 2 weeks later the vhs video got posted to my house, I was so pleased with the quality of filming & still have all my tapes full of my music collection

      @@leedsguy41 Let's hope Steve the Filmer finds this vid and feels proud of his legacy. It would just be a fading memory, eventually to be lost, without his efforts.
      It sounds like you've got a fine collection Mr Leeds. I'll keep my eye out for whatever else you post.
      I don't suppose you've got Big Country at Sheffield Octagon December 5th 1987 by any chance? My first ever gig at 15. To relive that again would choke me up and bring tears to my eyes.
