- Sotheby’s is honored to partner with celebrated actor and producer Robert Pattinson, who lends his curatorial eye to the latest edition of Sotheby’s September Contemporary Curated auction as this season’s curator. Selecting an edit of six artworks from the auction that personally resonated with him and speak to his own tastes in art, Pattinson’s selection spans a variety of media, from sculpture to painting to collage, and mixes established names such as Richard Serra and Willem de Kooning with rising stars such as Genieve Figgis and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, to present a kaleidoscopic vision of contemporary art, from post-war to today.
The Contemporary Curated exhibition will be on view on the 1st and 3rd floors of Sotheby’s between 24-29 September.

“If you don’t really understand it, you don’t really deserve it.” I think this is so correct. I think of rich people hiring interior designers who buy pieces based off aesthetic and perceived social value vs actually understanding a piece and buying it off that connection. Such a thoughtful dude.

i guess what he means is that understanding art needs an effort, you have to be around the art, invest your time into study. it's quite impossible to understand art just stepping into a gallery for the first time in your life. 😊

Interesting to hear him compare art to his experience as an actor.. he has pretty good taste. I like how he says he likes the urgency in sketches by sculptors and "I like artists working not in their chosen field." ...I relate to that. At the end he also says, "If you don't really understand it, then you don't really deserve it." Interesting thought.. I would amend that to, "If you really don't TRY to understand it, then you really don't deserve it."

Art can be very simple and also very complex. Just like at first rob said "you don't have to be able to explain something in literal way, the only thing that matter is the inspiration". Then at the end he said 'if you don't really understand it, you don't really deserve it" so which matter more, feeling it or understand it? 😂
I dont think one matters more than the other, as they arent exactly mutually exclusive. When he says "you don't have to explain something in a literal way, what matters is the inspiration" I think he's trying to say that the inspiration speaks for itself. Kinda like "show, don't tell"? Which makes sense for him since he's an actor, thats his job lol. Feeling the inspiration will lead to understanding as you're creating a connection with it. He mentions "artwork having it's own language/voice/story", meaning it doesn’t have an obvious readable message but one you would need to feel for it in order to understand.

Bcz art speaks for itself and speak their own language, some people can only admire/appreciate it but don't understand it (like me, bcz I don't know much about painting), and some can understand it but doesn't feel for it. I think the one who create it is the one who understand it, the only one who have a say, someone deserve their art or not

Great, there is no work for art historians and specialists but for actors yes, I did my MA at Sotheby's and lost track of how many CVs I sent to Sotheby's and Christie's.

yea it sucks. but i can say from a business standpoint, its great marketing, and the pictures he chose are beautiful with it seems full thought put behind it. its like a novelty exhibit and I personally love the pieces and explenations he chose. Better than if it was someone with no taste.

I would not deny that he’s creative and has a good point of view in the artworks. But there’s still a part of me thinking, although I spent probably too much money and time in art schools, studying art theories, museums and curation, there are chances a famous white dude could easily get, that I have to fight with many so many doors slammed in my face. Yeah, I don’t like to be so ‘PC aggressive’, but that’s mainly because it’ll not work for art sectors.

@Marvin Gustilo I'm a fellow Filipino artist as well living here in the US, and I'm in the same boat with you. Ang mahalaga ay matutunan mong i-market ng maigi yung mga artwork mo sa maraming tao. Pwede ka mag-sell ng art prints ng mga gawa mo. Continue posting it on social media so more people can see it, and if possible, create a good website for your art. Show your art to as many people as you can, basta ba magaganda ang mga gawa mo, may makaka-recognize sayo.

It's a marketing technique. It will draw so many more people into the gallery if you can say the show is curated by a very famous person.
