I had a veneer put on #7 today and during the prep, the tech and I were trying to pick shades. She suggested C3, but I thought D2 was more my color. She thought D2 was too light, but since it's my mouth, she went with my suggestion (although if I was more malleable, I would have gone with her expertise). I got my veneer seated today and the dentist was astounded by how exact the veneer matched my tooth color, remembering the tech suggested a darker color. The dentist commented in case I'm wondering why she was reading instructions, it was because she was using the transparent cement which requires different instructions, usually she has to adjust the veneer/crown shade with the color with lightening or darkening cement. I've been looking online to see what the difference between A, B, C, and D were in terms of hue (but so slight). I could tell the lightness/darkness was by 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. Thanks, this is the only word description I could find. Guess I have reddish teeth. Edit: I just saw another source that A: red-yellow, B: yellow, C: gray, D: red-yellow-gray (got it all!). So I'm red-yellow-gray. The mention I had an unusual tooth shade, although thank goodness it's not too deep.
Don't fault yourself being confused when you began using the Vitapan. As a fine art practitioner, now learning to create practical effects for film, creature costumes, learning about the system was a tad confusing, hence my browsing and commenting on such videos as yours. I thank you, for wanting to help others, inadvertently helped a practical effects artist, as well - cheers!
Alan Castaneda Hey Alan. Thank for the comment. That’s super cool that it actually helped you. If you’re in to learn root canals, that will be the next 6 months. LOL
did you say dr dre!? Value (lightness) describes overall intensity to how light or dark a color is. It is the only dimension of color that may exist by itself. Chroma (Saturation) may be defined as the strength or dominance of the hue. On the outer edge of the hue wheel are the intensely saturated hues.Towards the center of the color wheel, no hue dominates and they becomes less and less saturated. Hue is described with the words we normally think of as describing color: red, purple, blue, etc.
How does a3 look comparing to a2? My dentist says a3 looks more natural on me. (I have 2 teeth missing, I can't get implants because I have dentine problems)
What is the difference between the vitapan classical and the vita classical shase guide? I ask because they look almost the same but the vita classical is more expensive
what's the difference between lumin vacuum and vita classical? am working with dentist his shade guide is lumin vacuum and my shade guide vita classical both of them has different shade please help
you might what to take a gray scale image of how you have the classic value arranged- IN FACT- A1 is the highest value-- not B1- and D2 is lower in value than A3
Edward McLaren you are the expert. When I was watching this video I was trying to remember what u said on dentalxp where I watched a course for you about shade guide and selection.
Yes, B1 is the whitest you can have them naturally. Teeth naturally cannot be whiter than B1. Hollywood Smile are OM1 to OM3, OM1 being the whitest (Kardashians and Simon Cowell) and OM2 and OM3 are perfect for Hollywood (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Blake Lively). I think for men if you are doing crowns OM3 is the best choice and for women, also if you are doing crowns OM2 is the best. I would never choose OM1, unless you work on TV as news anchor.
There is no good or bad, just different shades. Whitening your teeth actually weakens the underlying structure making you more prone to cavities. Your natural teeth are your best teeth. Cleaning them by the dentist (this is what my dentist just told me) is perfect. AND he recommends Sensodyne NOT whitening toothpaste.

Sir can you please explain more about chroma value and hue and how it affects shade selection ??
Hue is a color or shade, chroma is the intensity of the color and value is the amount of grey in said color
you might what to take a gray scale image of how you have the classic value arranged- IN FACT- A1 is the highest value-- not B1- and D2 is lower in value than A3

I feel like I have yellow/darker teeth but dentist says I’m A2. Is that bad?
